Donations: ko-fi.com/sanyamatma 🙏 What type of cotton thread to use? 'Six strand cotton embroidery thread'. I use industrial sized cones, but it is usually sold in 8m length bundles. You’ll need: About 6-8m for the knots and about 3m for the tassel. Buy at least 2x 8m bundles. If you want a multi coloured tassel, buy 1x bundle for the knots and 3x for the tassel. It's best to buy a more expensive brand as good quality thread is more forgiving, it will slip better without breaking when making knots and ultimately it will last longer and keep it’s colour. To my knowledge ‘six strand cotton embroidery thread’ is roughly the same thickness regardless of the brand. Good brands include: DMC, Madeira, Anchor etc. The thread ‘bundles’ look like the ones on this link. www.dmc.com/us/six-strand-embroidery-floss-489-colors-available-9003292.html#null

I used this video to make my first mala. I chose a thread that ended up making the task far more difficult. Next time I’ll know better! It took me a while to get the knots down but it eventually became very easy with practice. Your instructions were the most helpful that I could find and helped me create a mala that I am very happy with. Thank you! 🙏🏻

This really is the best method for getting a nice symmetrically globular knot that doesn't have the little pointy irregularities in them that make the knot lopsided and, thus, they don't sit squarely in the hole in the bead. Most of the bead knotting tutorials on here are for extremely much finer synthetic, practically invisible, knotting threads for beads with much smaller holes than the wooden beads and traditional mala designs use. The result of those other knotting techniques produce something that you can't see, between the beads, how the knot, even with a knotting tool, is lopsided, because it's so small. Those same knotting techniques, even with good silk cord, produce lopsided knots. The knots themselves are actually part of Inner Eye's more traditional design for malas and natural materials add to how a mala feels when you use it. My only personal concern is being limited to a white, contrasty, knotting color, so I'm thinking about how to match the color of wooden beads closer by dying Brahmin cotton cord with tea or coffee. I tried a lot of different methods and came back to the first and best tutorial I watched. Thank you for your guidance.

Thanks for your comments. It was just 'chance' that the tutorial was made using white thread, as I use a wide range of coloured cotton and polyester threads when required for smaller holes or wrist malas for added strength. You'll be able to find excellent quality embroidery cotton pre-dyed in your preferred colour. But, maybe you'd also like the challenge of dying it naturally etc. Glad you enjoyed the tutorial 🙏

Thank you so much for the tutorial. I made my first chanting mala with knots, took quite some hours to get hang of it but the result feels so good. I had gotten big wooden beads in excitement and used to just thread them in one go. The thread would fray/break every couple months. First thing I noticed with knots was that the mala felt so light in hands despite the size of beads. I'm sure the thread will last longer too. Once again thank you so much :)

I bow to your beading & knotting excellence, you are the Master! I've discovered that I possess 2 left hands and many thumbs...LOL! I switched to "slow-motion and you're still too fast for me! I am however determined to move from wire wrapping and into knotting. I've watched many videos, all different and your's is "the best", it just requires patience to learn the technique, you make it look so simple! So when I get a loose knot or have tied it wrong...and have to "unknot" it, I remind myself that you have 20 years of experience, that I must crawl before I can walk and then run. Blessings to you Master and many thanks for sharing this video. I have learned a new serenity...if I'm stressed...my hands hold that tension and if I try to "force it", it doesn't work.

Thank you, I used this tutorial to make a 108+1 mala out of some nepali rudraksha I had lying around, and some thicker red nylon yarn. The first time I did it, the knots were loose, the amount of yarn I set out was too short, and i was really angry because it was difficult. So I cut it apart and did it again, and did much better the second time, and felt a lot calmer, lol. Now I feel the strong vibrations of the rudraksha on my body thanks to you! much appreciated.

Thanks for your feedback . . . most people find mala making challenging and frustrating at first. You'll get better and better each time, then gradually mala making will become (fairly) effortless and the focus can switch mantra, breath and the smooth repetitive process. Re: Thread lengths. 8 meters folded in half suits most malas with beads up to 9mm with fairly small holes. Larger beads = more string required Larger holes (bigger knots) = more string required It is also possible to add an extension if you run out of thread. I may make a short video on this one day! Enjoy
