When I started golf at the age of 16 years old, I hit it long and straight most of the time. Then I picked up a golf magazine and I went all to hell. By the time I was 18 years old, I was fighting a horrible slice and I was also hitting it much shorter. I then took up trying to rotate more and I got even worse. I just got used to being the worst one in our foursome and still had some fun but it was very frustrating. Then I took 4 years off from golf when I got busy at work. I went back to golf from scratch and started with this for my grip. I am now hitting a nice little draw with a lot less twisting and much, much further. Thanks, Mike. BTW, the grip and the Malaska move are the most transformative instruction I have ever seen and I have had more than a few lessons over the years. You are the best golf instructor by far.

I had seen Mike's previous vid on letting the left hand take its natural hanging position on the club and adopted it. But I inadvertently put my right hand on with palm facing way too much up. Couldn't figure out why I was hitting all my irons straight...but right of target. Then it struck me 2 days ago while at the range. I put my right hand more like Mike instructed Ashley to do here.. and instant improvement. Somehow I missed that part in the video before. I'm glad to see this video reinforces my thinking. And I got to see Ashley😉

Mike's a great teacher. Took a few lessons from him years ago in Utah. I teach as well and I can attest to his teachings on the grip. Very few players will be good at learning to "turn the wrist down" during the swing. Especially in the downswing. The result of that is almost all players will quit turning their lower body on the downswing and release the club early. That is the compensation for not having the face square. Griping the club in a "strong" position allows the average and above average golfer to be able to square the face even as they learn to turn more with the lower body and create lag and shaft lean at impact. Thanks Mike. Keep up the good work.
@dylanpatterson10852 жыл бұрын
Funny you say lower body turn. My issue is the exact opposite, I fire my lower body and have a near perfect lower body impact position, but my upper body lags behind and I’m almost in a reverse C shape looking head on. Struggling trying to keep my hands forward and matching my upper and lower at impact and through impact

Mike, Thanks for this video. Last few years I’ve had a bad tendency to hit heel shots and shanks. I take lessons with a PGA pro and his advice has helped, but feeling exhausted with hitting shanks, after watching this video, I switched from a “neutral” grip to a strong grip and during warm up was striking the center of ALL my irons. I’m a 6.1 hcp and I shot a 76 with what I thought was just a so-so round for other reasons. Never have I ever had such a solid round of ball striking with the irons, and all my clubs for that matter! Thanks, you have renewed my golf game.

I know this comment is a year old, but I have to say I understand where you're coming from when you say you were "feeling exhausted with hitting shanks". I have worked myself to the point of being exhausted and defeated trying to fix shanks and could not figure it out. It's strange because I'll be hitting the ball very well. Then boom... out of nowhere I start shanking. I can literally hit 10/10 shanks sometimes. Then I have to start really manipulating in order to not shank. Tonight, while I was practicing, I reassessed my grip and went to a very strong grip. I was able to go back to all of the good stuff I had built into my swing without all of the manipulations. It feels like being set free!

This video really helped me. I have been battling my flip (early release) for a very long time. Thank you, Mike. I tried a very strong lead-hand grip (4 knuckles) with the trail hand palm parallel to the club face. My flip disappeared immediately. My shots were pull draws. I hit several shots and straightened the pull/draw a bit, but not much. A medium strong (2.5 knuckle) lead-hand grip, again with the trail hand palm parallel to the club face, produced more gentle pull draws. I moved to a natural grip (2 knuckles) and made sure the trail hand palm was parallel to the club face. This put the trail hand a bit more on top of the grip than I’m used to. The flip was now back in play, but it was late enough that I still had shaft lean (the club released to about 5:00). That produced a slight pull and slight draw. I had previously done the drill where I started with a closed club face, which was great for swinging without flipping. However, there is no release in that drill. For this drill, keeping the trail hand palm parallel to the club face gave me an opportunity to release the trail arm through the ball. I will keep practicing. Thanks again!

The “neutral” grip was considered orthodox in the 70s and 80s, and the “strong” grip was considered taboo. Because of this I now flip and wave the club at impact and NOTHING can help me make it consistent. As a youth in the 60s I assumed a strong grip that DID produce consistent results. Also, I’ve swung a lot of sledgehammers and always did so with a “strong” grip…I think I’ll be returning to the strong grip in golf…thanks Mike!

Just listen to Malaska. I finally understood golf watching Malaska videos 👉Hands down and club head out. At transition, after weight on left side, the arms and upper body will move down a bit naturally as a single unit. That first movement will let your chest to be pointing more parallel to the ground. Then, you can bring the hands down and club head out. And do extend your right arm ( just enough for impact position) and that will be responsible for that solid contact effortlessly. As you are extending the right arm, you will take your left hip out of the way. That's it.

Really great Mike. So many instructors will tell you the flip is a result of early hinging and unhinging of the wrists when it’s really the rolling of the wrists. Then they make you hold your wrist angle to create “lag” and all you end up doing is lose power because you’ve taken all the speed out that’s in your hands.

Mike, I feel extremely guilty. Watching your videos are making golf so much simpler again (I used to play at a high level and had lost my way). This video specifically brought so many factors together, starting with the grip. When I had been just warming up, I could get great speed with the club. Put a ball down, no. Why? With my grip, I had to make compensations in order to hit the ball straightish. Guess what? Those compensations destroy speed, they have to. Once I fixed my grip, I don't have to worry about manually closing the face or anything else. It's so liberating. Anyway, about the guilt. I feel like I should just hand you a pile of money! Jeff R.

This was a very important video for me. I had to change my game from a square to square type of game to a more upright style of golf because of back issues. I watched this last night, and this morning went to the practice greens, putting the left hand on the clubs as Mike showed and the right hand in the normal position. To my amazement, the ball direction was right on the aim direction (for a 20 yards chip) and the dispersion was tight. I had had problems with the ball directions, often slightly to the right. Mike's advises worked for me with my U and S wedges as well. OUt of curiosity , I applied the left hand method to my putter. (left hand low and L hand now almost on the top of the putter grip). To my delight, my balls would go straight on the intended line, not as open as I had done them. will see how I do tomorrow in my full round. THANK YOU , Mike

Mike's description of why to grip the club this way is so compelling, based on actual physiology and the priority of face control, not "this is how we've always done it." One thing I had to do when changing to this grip is go from overlap to interlocking, FYI. Interestingly, Paul Wilson has a video called "Strong is Wrong" as well as a follow up where he tries to explain how a strong grip is a "flaw" that must be compensated with another "flaw" in order to be successful. He says you would need to hit 300-500 balls a day to make it work right. It's a good example of the "industry not doing a good job" as Mike would put it.
@ocat19793 жыл бұрын

About 30 years ago, I joined a driving range - went through the Ben Hogan book "Five Lessons" - and changed my grip to this, (stronger) grip. It took three weeks of hitting balls every day before I could "feel" normal with it, but I got to the point (like you teach) that I could get the club started, then swing as hard as I wanted, and end up with a slight draw. I miss those days and realize that what I have done is fall back into a poor grip - leading with the back of my left hand. I cannot wait to do this again!

This video literally blew my mind! 🤯 I subscribed to a different golf instruction site that exactly teaches to wrist turn in transition to bow in order to compress the ball. I guess we begin to ask our selves, is the goal really a 200 yard 34 degree 7 iron. I struggle so much with that move because I am so afraid of injury. It will be a total change in mindset to NOT try to bow!
@ronaldstark834210 ай бұрын
After decades using the weak left hand that Mike describes using, resulting in inconsistency because of the difficulty rotating through the same way, I have been trying this. As Mike mentions, initially, the remnants of the old method creep in and my hands are trained to rotate. So, the occasional hook happens. But, gradually, the rotation is ebbing. But, I think it is to be expected that it takes time to consistently release in this new manner. I need more reps. For some reason,one round this fall, the old rotation was gone and my shots were great. I had one snap hook off the tee, but that was it. Mike's release yields more height for me and more distance, as well as consistency. My old rotation release also deleted the face. Too low. Again, give yourself time to rid yourself of the old open and rotate method. I was a 1 handicap using it but it required a ton of practice hitting balls, and the hook always lurked.

@ToddCiehomski2 жыл бұрын
Try “closing” the face on the backswing and “opening” it on the downswing at all costs. Your body should eventually accommodate the swing finish. By feeling you are opening the face coming through the ball your right elbow will tuck into your side and you will rotate through. Imagine that you never let the club face close.
