I remember it like it was yesterday. I just sat there stunned. I said, who is this man? He said, Bread. I said, Bread? Said yeah. I bought the album the next day, and commenced to buy every album as soon as they hit the record store. All 6 of them are great. Come on Hall of Fame. This group deserves it if any do. I was 17 yo (1973) and when I first heard the Bread's songs I immediately was amazed by their tune and voice when they were complete (with James Griffin) that I immediately bought their LPs Everything I own and the 2nd album The Guitar Man and started to play their songs thru my guitar and until now at 66 I still listen to their songs and play guitar and sings to their songs. They're great.

Bread is one of my favorite bands ! I absolutely LOVED this show. It's amazing that what they did on stage sounds exactly as it does on their studio recordings - simply awesome! So many groups have to "jazz up" their songs in concert that really ruins the experience. Thankfully BREAD does it right!!

'Nobody else could ever know the part of me that can't let go.' The full meaning of this line didn't hit me until my own father died last month. People are sympathetic, and they try to cheer you up and tell you to remember the good times. Or they tell you about how its natural to die and normal to grieve. It's all true of course, but they didn't know my father like I knew him, that is, as his son. Nobody will ever know that, and there's no way I could ever fully explain how much I love him to anyone. I guess with all deaths there is this utterly private aspect 'that can't let go'. I do not know of any song that better captures this human sorrow. Thank you, David Gates.

Karen Carpenter. But yes, he's also amazing. I forgot about this band and now that I'm older I have new appreciation for just how good many of these artists were, long before I was born, long before the world became fake.
@pocopico7409 Жыл бұрын
@@Patrick-857: Haha, yes, I agree with you on Karen. I don’t know why, but Karen had a voice that I didn’t fully appreciate when she was alive. I liked her voice and Carpenters music, but I guess I just took them for granted because music was SO great back then. SO much amazing talent! Listening to her now (and watching KZbin videos of their performances), it becomes quite apparent how exceptional her voice was, and how great the Carpenters really were. That happens to me pretty often now that I’m older. Being able to watch all the old videos on KZbin of all our favorites back then makes it clear just how lucky we were to have a grown up during such a prolific musical period.

@Poco Pico Yeah. At work I'm forced to listen to top 40 type radio, all day. I never liked what was on the charts when I was in my teens and early 20s (I was born in 1989) but in the last 6 years it's gotten absolutely horrible. Ever since Ticktock arrived, the composition and production is all about getting that 10 second viral moment in a song, and the rest of the song is an afterthought. I know a fair bit about music production, and my ears are pretty tuned into the modern techniques now, so I can hear the original vocal performance behind all the editing, pitch correction and artificially generated harmonies now. It's clear to me almost none of these artists are good singers at all. There are exceptions, but they get the same production as the rest and don't stand out to me. I hear some absolutely cringy stuff in some of these songs. Bad lyrics, bad production, lazy compositions with no substance to them, and yet it's somehow popular. Maybe I'm getting old. I crave the sound of humans making music without a digital gloss over it. I don't even care if it's a good singer or not. Nobody accused Bob Dylan of being a good singer. Kurt Cobain was good in his own unique way but was certainly not a classically good singer, just raw emotion and talent, completely unrefined. Those songs off Nevermind were rough as hell, but Butch Vig did an incredible job of making it sound great. But it was on tape. Real performances that weren't really edited. Just well mixed with good sound quality. I really like that, and I really like these incredible singers too. To me, it's not about being best performer in the world, it's about it being real, and making me feel something. This stuff on the charts is almost devoid of anything human, and what human element is left is in the lyrics, which are formulaic, forced and calculated, and often trying to push something I find repulsive. The Carpenters were considered too squeaky clean and kind of uncool in their time, but now they are a breath of fresh air, because they represent something pure, innocent and wholesome. It's not trying to force anything on you. The music reflects the society, and modern pop is the soundtrack of a society collapsing under the weight of its own hubris, decadence and hypocrisy. This music we both love from the 60s and 70s was innocent, hopeful and full of joy by comparison. People seemed happier then, and their hearts were more open.
@pocopico7409 Жыл бұрын
@@Patrick-857: “The music reflects the society, and modern pop is the soundtrack of a society collapsing under the weight of its own hubris, decadence and hypocrisy.” I think you hit the nail on the head with that statement. “Music reflects society” is a great way of putting it. The world was a much different place when we grew up, compared to what it is now. We see evidence of complete societal decay all around us now. It seemed to really start with the ushering in of social media and the ushering out of God. The world (and country) we grew up in had pride and totally different values than today’s world.

Actually, one of the original Bread members. Rob Royer, from Bass Lake, CA who went to Sierra High School, in Auberry CA., as far as I know is still alive. He left the band, I think after the second album was released. He has been in one or two country bands sense then. He and James Griffin (went by the name of Author James) co-wrote the Carpenter's hit song "For All We Know", from the movie, "Lover's And Other Stanger's" and received an Oscar that year, 1970, for best original song!!!

Not really. I read their biography a few months ago. Gates was one of the cleanest, squarest guys you could meet. He didn't drink or do drugs, prioritized family above all, and handled Bread dealings as BUSINESS. He wasn't one of those guys just out there playing and get played. He read and negotiated contracts; so he knew how much he was earning. That's why he was always the one in the group with the deepest pockets. Also believed in getting in exercise and working hard. So anyone who doesn't believe in clean living needs to check this guy. Still with his original wife and his kids grew up to be successful doctors and lawyers. Oh...did I mention he and JoRita are still living very comfortably? NIIIIIICE!

The only one missing is James Griffith, but that is ok. Thanks again. Yes!! in El Salvador, as in all Latin America, rock was played on the radios and young people danced to it. I remember going to parties in El Salvador as a teen (early 1960's) and dancing to rock music. The Turtles, Ritchy Valens, The Association, The Beatles, Garry Puckett and The Union Gap, Roy Orbison, etc., etc. Latin and Rock music were blended, and Latin Singers such as Enrique Guzman were played along with Rock musicians. Heck, even some of my friends who later on became leftist guerrillas rocked to the music.
