Given how important food is to Hobbits, the line about Frodo and Sam not knowing whether their meal on the stairs would be the last meal they ever ate together is especially poignant. It's a small detail in a scene full of many great details, but it's such a nice touch. I don't believe I have ever made that connection before.

You're exactly right, when a book is that good, you forget you're reading because you feel like a fly on the wall in the middle of the storyline. As others have pointed out, the fact this is a 16 minute video and yet it felt like only 4 minutes, shows how engrossed to the story I was. It's such a wonderful moment on the stairs. I may have to read these books again. It's been 20 years...

Ah, Malcom, my friend, you are spot on. It is a blessing to encounter a kindred spirit anywhere in life but a particular joy in regards to the Legendarium and its associate myth makers (yourself included)! That passage is one of my favorites as well. Such a powerful exchange...there in the midst of the struggle, possibly represented by the stair--the search for meaning that never stops, and it's in stories that we find it. Truly. I find Frodo's observation that "people in" the great tales "come[ing] and go[ing] when their parts ended..." especially comforting. On a hard day I may be tempted to compare my life as a story to others' and find it wanting--not enough beauty, or love, or success, or whatever ingredient I erroneously believe is essential. But in truth, my life is an ingredient--the highs and the lows--to a "great tale," our tale of the kingdom now and coming in, and no one can play my particular part as I can. That's what matters...how I play my part with the "time..." I've "been given" (Ha-ha!)--the Legendarium keeps giving. As I've said before, I so look forward to your Matter of Britain. It will be just such a story. I know it! Cheers and thanks!

Wonderful read. I just finished The Two Towers myself for the first time. This passage bought me to tears. I think it serves very nicely as it not only gives hope to the reader that there is more to come as you have said. But it somehow gives hope to Frodo and Sam! it feels like we the readers are reaching out to them! like you said, we are screaming 'you are in one, it's all right!'. Such a powerful way to connect the reader to the story and some how although impossible, vice versa!. Great video, more Tolkien please!

Funnily enough, I was just reading this passage when I saw your video pop up on my feed. It's wonderfully done and a moment of joy and light in an incredibly dark place, vividly painted by Tolkien in this and the previous chapter. The sense of foreboding is incredible and I like how this provides such a moment of levity and pureness of spirit to contrast with the darkness they are now within. I agree completely with your analysis, although I also have to mention that the passage around the same time regarding Gollum/Smeagol's observation of the two Hobbits sleeping is perhaps one of my favourite bits. It brings an unexpected moment of touching empathy with his character that I always feel so immensely sad reading, feeling a connection that he has towards them that you know he will never recapture, now a villain, as his story tragically plays out, yet with such a key part to play in the tale as well. Such a wonderful and profound work of literature these books remain. Thank you for the reminder and for making these wonderful videos! Congratulations on your literary project as well, I am sure it will be a success :)

This passage is one of my favorites, and sets up what may be my favorite moment in the books. When Frodo and Sam are in the depths of Mordor, walking through the poisoned landscape, approaching Mt Doom; when it seems like death has become the only option, a small break forms in the black clouds to reveal a single star. I imagine it to be The star, the Silmaril shining through the window, a reminder to Sam that he is correct, they are within the great story, and what they do matters.

I've been slowly progressing through my read of The Lord of the Rings. I just finished The Two Towers a few nights ago. I cannot even begin to articulate the effect that these last few chapters of Frodo and Sam's sufferings have had on me. I am prone to dark and hopeless thinking. But the moments of beauty and fellowship and heroism that lie within these chapters are some of the most impactful pieces of literature I have ever read in my life. This might be my new favorite Malcolm Guite video. Great passage to highlight and how beautiful of Tolkien to “break the fourth wall” a bit and ask the audience what type of stories are the ones “that matter”, in addition to being an incredible stakes-raising moment for the characters and for the story by reinforcing the looming, eminent danger. Brilliantly conveyed, Mr. Guite! ❤.
