If you're looking to adopt a cat, let us know your preference (male or female). If you already have a cat, let us know if these generalizations apply to your feline friend! 🐈💙🐈💗

My cats came from outdoors my apt. It was a mom(female) and her son(male) still a kitten. the mom was a bit feral in her attitude. She was not cuddley and she did not like a lot of petting except the usual scratch behind the ears and pet down her back. when she was done with your attention she gave a quick swipe at you with her paw. Her son on the other hand was sweet, loved a cuddle and plenty of attention. Would sleep with you and follow you around the house. Of course I loved them both and provided each one with each wanted. I just love cats and like me would never want to be put in a box especially without any previous getting to know period. 😻😍🐾✌️

After over 15 years of rescuing/fostering and helping thousands of cats, I and other rescuers I know agree that it's the neutered male cats that are generally more affectionate than females, Females are also often more energetic and playful whereas males are usually calmer after they're full grown adults. I'm of course generalizing

Thats my experience too. The males I've had are huge cuddle-bugs, sweet and chill. The females range from nearly feral to very aloof and picky. The meanest cat I ever had (despite having her from 6 weeks) was a spayed female.. she was extremely aggressive and hated human interaction.

True for me too... My only ever female was very independent, hated our other cats and would tolerate being smoothed for a few minutes then bite or scratch. Our many boys have been far more affectionate and cuddly. Currently have 3 boys, they are delightful and great company. All my cats have been neutered and rescue cats. They are the light of my life 😺

I've had cats for 70 years, usually 3 or 4 at a time. My observations: they must be spayed/neutered! Males (neutered) are the most cuddly and affectionate, but every cat is different. Females (spayed) are usually very territorial; depends on the cat. In every group the dominant cat was a female, who always occupied the highest perch in the house, where she could look down on the other cats. Female cats are generally more graceful and will not knock things over, whereas the males seem to like the sound of knickknacks hitting the floor! There are lots of exceptions to this. All my cats learned their names in a very short time, but most would not come when called. Unless I had food. Or they felt like it. Introducing a new cat of either sex (neutered of course) to the group was never a problem beyond the first couple days of hissing from the resident females. The males couldn't care less. Cats are weird. I think they are aliens.

Bowing down to a true cat veteran 🙌🏼 I completely agree too but have only had spayed females, and only one set of two. Our neighbours boy cat lives with us though and my cat is no longer aggressive but can be a bit mischevious and dominant if she fancies it. He’s extremely clingy and chilled out, very docile. They don’t cuddle up ever but they can sleep on different sides of the bottom of the bed almost touching. She has the temperament of a Doberman though always watching and on guard, only shows affection to me and sleeps in my bed at night, I’m the youngest girl in the house my poor mum doesn’t get a look in.

I've had cats for over 50 years and I couldn't agree more. My boy cats - who I always get neutered by 8mos & usually by 6mos - are the *most* affectionate. But, both genders are equally territorial, in my experience. I have 3 7mo kittens right now - same litter, 2 males, 1 female. That little girl can jump into places her brothers can only dream of being! She has at least a 4 foot straight vertical; their mama does, too. The boys are fast, but last night I heard a cat at the door, when I thought all the cats were in. Go to see who's there, it's my princess! I had no idea she was out - she slipped out when I was letting another cat in earlier! She is the escape artist! And she's been spayed since she was 5mo. So it's hard to generalize about cats. I'd hate for a loving cat to miss out on a great home just because someone made assumptions based on things the cat can't control.

I've had the exact opposite experience. I've had a couple of female cats the don't want to be held at all. I've had several male cats that won't let you NOT hold them. I've had one male cat that didn't want to be held either. I think it depends on how they were treated as kittens.

The last part is 100000% true. Kittens need to be handled A LOT so as adult they enjoy human touch more. But even so personality traits can come into play. All the cats we had growing up were big lap cats and loved to actually be ON you. My two now both male and female are not like that at all
@elainechubb971

Absolutely! I became the "owner" of a male kitten only four weeks old and as I had to hand-feed him and wean him and house-train him (luckily he seemed already to know what a litter box is), I became his mom, and he was super-affectionate and demanded to be picked up and held and cuddled very often--when I came home, after he had had his dinner, etc. After this lone male, I had two females (sisters), who came to me half-grown; they were quite affectionate but not to each other! They competed for my lap and my cuddles.

Years ago I was lucky enough to have a stray female who had 4 babies. As the kittens grew she would watch them closely and at times engage in play, which is mostly practice for hunting and fighting. And if they got too aggressive she would swat them hard enough to send them rolling. All the kittens became very sweet, loving adults. Cats are wonderful people!

I have had two pairs of neutered males/ spayed females, and now two neutered males. While all but one female was affectionate, the females were more independent. The males have all been cuddlebugs, even the last one who who would "never be a lap cat," according to the rescue! The first male/female pair protected me against my violent husband by biting him when he tried to strangle me to death. I rescued them, and years later, they saved me.

All my male cats too, I could do anything with them. About being social yes, my males were more social. I was brought up with cats, had cats all my life, none of the females were cuddly except for the last one who isn't mine but my neighbours and she claims my lap as soon as she sees me and gets a chance to. That is too funny, I now 'have' a cat without costs or needing to feed.

In my case the cat chose me. He was a stray, about a year old, that just walked into my house and kept coming back. Nobody local knew where he was from they’d just seen him around. My first cat was an adopted male Persian. Adorable, playful and affectionate When he died at 15 years I quickly replaced him with a female tortoiseshell and a male fluffy grey cat. I think he was separated from his mother too soon. He tried to suckle her. They had some feisty confrontations. When I was able to get him fixed ( she came fixed) that mellowed him out. He never meowed though she did all the talking. When she died at 15 years. He cried I could here him from another room. Then he started to meow and express himself. I really miss having kitties but too expensive and lifting the litter is too much for me. The 3 were the best for me though. Very lovable .

@@vyda - Yes. An alternative is to get a good long-handled sieved spoon for litter boxes. That works fine for me and is easier than pulling up a folding chair to do the job. I also feed and water the cats in elevated positions, works fine. I have a catproof fence around the yard but need to keep a tracker on one escape artist, and she just jumps up on a chair or counter when she sees me dangling her tracker collar so I can easily get it on her. (I take it off when she is inside for the night.) I have only so many safe bends per day now.... and my grabber can help with small food dishes but it’s chancy. I also would recommend enlisting the help of someone to help with such chores if needed. I did that for an elderly neighbor for several years and ended up with his cats as my inheritance when he died! By then they both knew me very well. I would visit every day and take care of the litter boxes, make sure water and food were properly available and give both cats sufficient attention (their pet human was kind of clueless, his wife had been the nurturing one in the family).

I had a female cat. She was quite shy when it came to strangers, but very affectionate towards my family, especially me. She would come greet us at the door when we came home and brushed against our legs 24/7. I could say she was like a sister to me. Sadly she died last July. My best friend has two female cats of the same litter - sisters. They get along quite well, sometimes they even play fight and stalk each other. They are both rather independent and don’t need as much petting and cuddling as my cat did. While my cat spent most of her life indoors, my friend’s cats go out regularly and hunt down birds & mice.

I am a die hard male cat kind of gal. My best experience has been with males, they are so so so cuddly and loving. I've only ever had needy male kitties. Love being held, pet, kissed, and cuddled. I even had 2 males so far that would follow me every where, come running when their names were called, and had a strict cuddle-nightly routine. The females that we've had in our household have always been extremely independent. Did not want to be held. Wanted to be pet and cuddled only when they wanted it. Graceful, dominant, and elegant. I did have one female, though, who from an extremely young age I trained strictly. She was the sweetest thing. She loved being held and cuddled. Such a sweet girl. She was raised with one of the boys mentioned that was the love of my life due to him being a follower and cuddler. I just trained them early on to associate me with sleeping and cuddling. As well as taught them that biting and scratching didn't work, they wouldn't be put down until I gave them a kiss. (Though, out of respect for them I usually kept holding as a short period. If they were going to behave and not attack me, then I tried very hard to respect them.)

We've had VERY affectionate male cats (my little brother currently has the most antisocial cat I've ever seen with everyone bar him but they are inseparable when strangers aren't around) and female cats that are very independent (had her for over 15 years and would only take affection on her terms but LOVED it when she did). I’ve recently fostered over a dozen cats from different litters, and a mix of males and females from about 8 weeks to 6 months old (2-3 at a time). The males are curious and enjoy some roughhousing, but are actually less active and less “athletic” than the females. They all like to play and have attention, but females NEED to run, jump, and hunt each evening. They want to chase something extensively. Males are often satisfied with watching or toying with something interesting, and they want a quick and easy chase and catch. A little lazier. It takes more work to keep males in good shape physically because you have to motivate them to run. The girls just won’t stop moving until well into the night. The degree to which they want physical affection varies more by personality than gender seemingly.

The males won't usually expend that much energy or effort to catch a toy... but if the girls or another male want to get physical, the males will not stop until they've pinned the other down or made them squeal in order to prove their superiority, or until they've been thoroughly beaten by another male (and then they are just biding their time until the next opportunity to test themselves against their brothers). The girls won't fight over and over and submit so they can get back to chasing things. The boys still do chase and catch, but they seem to want to watch whatever they are chasing for long periods to find the easiest time to catch it. Boys like to fight; girls like to hunt and chase. Amazing to see these instincts emerge again and again because when I first get them they can barely walk without tripping over their own feet.

I had a male black cat for 19 years, and he is and always will be the love of my life. I adored my siamese growing up and I adore my current cats, but my black cat had both my heart and soul. He was the sweetest and most loving cat. He loved cuddling with me on the couch, he enjoyed being held and kissed and didn't mind me smooshing his face. The way he would look at me, with eyes full of love and devotion, it was like he was looking into my soul. I know I'll never have a cat like him again.

We've often had male cats let kittens nuzzle them and will babysit them. We've also had them be at least as loving as the females, and females have just as much curiosity about sneaking outdoors if they can, and be at least as mischievous as our males. I guess you could say our cats have usually been unlike the 'average' of their gender all the way around, LOL!

Imo there is no true difference in personality between cat sexes. A cat’s size has more of an impact than its sex on its temperament (ie, the smaller the cat, the more cautious it tends to be), while socialization (ie: nurture) blurs any so-called “temperament differences” even further. Really the biggest difference are what health complications they’ll experience because of their birth-sex (like male cats being more prone to urinary tract issues like bladder crystals and kidney problems than female cats, and like clockwork affecting a male cat around age 3-5 years)

Of all the cats (ive) had, 2 "adopted" me, while the 3rd one was given to me by a friend of my sister. The first was an orange female tabby, the second was a gray (russian blue?), and the current one is my buddy, Black Friday, and he also adopted me. The orange female tabby originally was my sister's, but it switched to my dad, and then to me, so i guess that would be adopting the human. I named the orange female tabby, "Whisket", (a slight misspelling of my dads favorite drink), we got her spayed after a stray male tried to mate with her, but i thwarted it by dumping water on him. That cat followed me everywhere except to school and/or work. When i moved, (twice), Whisket's mode of transport was an old birdcage, as the cat carriers hadnt been thought of yet. She lived right at 16 years, and several months after she passed, my sister gave me "Biskit", from one of her friends cat's litter. He stuck with me for a few years, then when i got married, he became my wifes cat. He also lived around 16 years, then there was a period where my wife did daycare and our kids were in multiple activities, so, no pets for around 10 years, then Black Friday came along, and hes been the best one to date. (And ive spoiled him worse than a human child!) End of story!

Another thing a friend of mine (and myself) found out after getting her cat spayed was that we weren't allergic to her any more 🤔 Our vet told us that sometimes getting your cats spayed or neutered helps with the allergens it may create after licking their fur for their "bath time". I thought that was really odd and had to share! I prefer male cats/animals and of course they have to be neutered! It's for their own well-being and safety 😸 Thank you for this, I never knew male cats had a shorter urethra, I would have thought it was the other way around. Always learn from your videos! 😊

I got both a male (Demian 2 years old) and a female (Jody 7 years old), and I can confirm, Jody is a lot more bonded to people, specially me, she always tries to sleep in my desk while I work or study, and gets really sad whenever i have to leave for college, but she is really territorial, and will hiss at any neighbour cat that gets too close. Demian on the other hand, (like his name implies) is a little demon of mischief, he always tries to jump on tables and counters that he knows he isn't allowed to, he always hangs out outside with our dog, and is generally more happy around my mom (cuz she treats him like a baby lol), but he also is a lot more loyal, whenever someone is interscting with him, and they have to leave to do something (either the bathroom, go outside, etc) he will start screaming almosr as if he is calling them back, he needs to be close to someone at all times. They are a lot like siblings, Jody clearly is the dominant cat of the house, while Demian tries his best to sometimes play with her with less than possitive results (generallt ends up on them running arrlund the houde with Jody hissing at Demian), it may be because of their age difference, but still, even after that, they do seem to care for eachother, with Jody sometimes smelling and licking Demian to clean him, while Demian always tries to be close to Jody and imitate her actions to be like her. They are my entire world, I love them so much, whenever I come home I just see Demian rush arround the yard or the front door to greet me along my dog (Mario), and Jody is generally chilling in the living room or my desk and her eyes light up whenever she sees me arrive, I love them so much.

I adopted them that same hour and a few days later, they came home with me. I’ve had them for almost 4 years and I adore them both. I tend to go with female cats (neutered). When roaming outside they will stick close to the home and return on mealtimes. Even so, like the males they will engage in fighting trespassing cats but are more cautious in general with traffic and strangers. I think the males (neutered) have a slight edge on sociability with other cats, dogs and humans. Like the video said they might be even more curious and this could get them into trouble like when they sneak into other houses. They are both incredible friends.

She also has zero runaway tendencies but is very affectionate to guests who want to pet her. She is also super calm around other cats and dogs. There are a million other silly, funny, cute things about her too (she puts her whole body over her bowl when she drinks), she LOVES all her toys (wand, laser, mice, springs) and will lead me to the toy she wants to play with. my poor lady kitty has had to deal with so much change. The first time we moved was a disaster. She went from being a happy normal kitty to being terrified and always hiding. But she came around. And then we moved to CANADA... on a ROAD TRIP... and this kitty camped out with us in tents, in our car, in hotels... she was forced to get used to change, and she became a travelling kitty. She now adjusts SO WELL. I'm so proud of my lil Poo. Luckily she's been in a stable single environment for about 5 years now, and we have no plans to move soon.

The UTI'S in males is a very real and expensive dilemma. Years ago my Jonathan (orange tabby) had to be widened and 30 years ago it was expensive, it would be an astronomical procedure now. I've had mostly females since and found them to be the cuddliest and most affectionate of the genders.

I grew up with 4 cats all male. the older two were rescues from a shelter cat that gave birth so they spent their entire lives as indoor cats and definitely were escape artists (we tried putting them on leashes once to give them a compromise but they escaped those too… as well as their flea collars) the shelter had them neutered and they were two of the biggest cuddle bugs (rivaled only by one of my other two cats I’m about to mention) and both of them loved to show affection with licking, one of them so much so that he’d put his paw on whatever part of you he was licking and without missing a beat would lightly bring out his claws to keep you captive to his love if you tried to pull away. now my other two boys. both of them were originally outdoor cats, the first of which was completely feral. we had a whole flock of feral cats near my house growing up but none of them had ever approached us or let us interact with them until this little runt the size of a peach and we knew we had to take him in before winter (he never grew to be too big he’s less than a foot and a half long and gets confused for a kitten at age 16). we knew the two older cats (it’s a 2 year age difference between the pairs) wouldn’t take well to the new addition and he’d be extra nervous in the new environment so we rescued him a friend born in a barn to keep him company. now both these boys were originally outdoor cats and I can count on one hand the amount of times the two of them combined have even attempted to leave the house. the first time mr feral permakitten left he immediately ran under the garbage can and just started crying and shaking. he’s only been out once since and almost immediately walked himself right back in the second he realized he’d touched pavement. we got these two neutered as soon as we possibly could and they turned into the biggest cuddle monster and attention whore you’d ever see. the cuddle monster must be as close as possible to you at all times that you are sitting or laying down. he WILL come up on your chest and he WILL knead his claws into your neck purring the whole time. meanwhile the other little boy would constantly beg for attention. he was the only one of my boys that wouldn’t cuddle but he’d get his pets even if he had to do it himself. you just stick your hand out and he’ll rub his face on the fingers then run his whole body under the palm. when looking for attention if you didn’t have an “automatic petter” readily available he’d simply paw at you until you did and similar to the licker would begin to lightly bring out the claws if necessary. I loved my four boys to pieces they were some of the most affectionate animals I’ve ever had and will forever be the reason I’ll prefer male cats to female (also the only cat to ever bite me in a more than playful way was a female) also my sister’s neutered male cat only accepts physical affection in the form of spanks

@@Snailmail1 well his most extreme case was he charged through the window screen and broke the screen off the window. He fell 2 stories but wasn't hurt thank god. The normal stuff he does is run around the room as if his butt is on fire, get beat up by my girl cats because they don't take shit from anyone, and try to get into the kibble bag because he's always hungry. He really is the sweetest cat though, getting him to purr is pretty effortless.

Biggest difference I’ve noticed after owning both: -male cats are prone to bladder crystals developing around 3-5 yrs of age, especially if they were neutered too early (if you can wait until after they’re 6 months old, it’s going to be better for his future health. But preemptively putting him on a Urinary Diet is also a good idea) -female cats are sometimes more reserved. This has more to do with their Size and Socialization: cats are as much prey animals as they are predatory animals. The smaller the cat, the more cautious they tend to be; and female cats can be smaller than male cats. But even a small female cat can be just as social and playful as a medium-sized-to-large male cat-it gets down to a cat’s Individual Nature + Nurture/Socialization) So, for first-time cat owners? Choose a female cat simply because of that Health Timebomb that can result in an emergency vet visit or even result in kidney failure and a dead cat (and happen SUDDENLY even while watching for symptoms). But otherwise? There really isn’t that much of a difference between Energy and Temperament whatsoever

Those bladder problems with the cats are rly weird, my male cat first got them at 1yr 3 month and i had to deal with it for nearly a year and it totalled $8k in vet bills to sort out

I deeply loved my shy female Tuxedo who lived 21 years with me-she was gorgeous… My most affectionate, completely gentle, loving cat friend was a male Burmese-he was a great rat hunter, very outgoing and confident, but his most superb characteristic was he simply couldn’t get enough time snuggling, purring and enjoying close human contact and friendship-he was so lovely, such a brilliant friend :-) Have just adopted a 7 month old female stray-she’s so energetic and curious, not much interested in snuggles yet though…

2 years ago I picked out, what I thought was a male kitten. It was so playful and energetic, all it did the first month or 2 was eat, sleep, poop, and play. Found out at the vet she was a girl. She's become a lot sweeter since we've bonded, but still not super into being touched. She started door dashing so I harness trained her so we could go on walks. She wound up being the runt of the litter, she's fully grown and so tiny. But has this masculine energy about her. The poor thing went into heat at 4 months old. This was during lock down so I had to wait for her 6 mo appt. She wouldn't even yowl, she would just squeek in her tiny little voice 😩

We already had a senior male cat n a young female dog when my husband brought a young female cat home. She blended into the household seamlessly. However last summer he brought a male kitten home n her sweet friendly personality completely changed. She’s calmed down some in the last couple of months but I worry our sweet girl will never fully return. 😢 Everyone except her is fixed. Would having her spayed help with her hateful hostile behavior towards him? He is such a sweet, friendly n lovable little cat so it hurts my heart that she still feels so upset over the addition.

I think getting her spayed would definitely help, before I got one of my females spayed she'd almost like scream when you'd try to pick her up sometimes and she was super mean mostly to a specific female, and after we got her spayed she normally loves being held and pet and she purrs a lot more and she's much more well behaved with the other cats

I have a male orange white tabby. He's a big and tall cat weighing about 25 pounds. In the summer I leave a window open so, he can come and go as he pleases. Last year he vanished for 9 days, then came home at about 6:30 am. He started meowing. I was happy to see him. I thought he was dead. So far, this year, He comes home every night.

I grew up with male and female cats and didn't really get attached to one until I was 14. He was a male and I was his human. I've had 2 females and 3 males since he passed, yet both females were standoffish and more finicky, preferring my boyfriend at the time/now husband over me while the males are the exact opposite. Extremely affectionate and loud talkative cuddly babies. Maybe it was just the cats personality, but from experience it seems I don't get along with female cats.

It kind of depends, both my males actually seem to pick on the females so you could maybe get 2 males and a female, my males actually seem to like each other best, or if you want to make sure they don't gang up on the female you could get 2 females and a male, but also if you're getting unfixed cats males should be cheaper to neuter, I know that's not a super big deal, but it just depends

They loved each other and lived to be 18, 20 & 21 respectively, so they are a life time commitment whether you are rich or poor, healthy or sick, but worth every day of it! my cat is a female and she is the total apposite. she doesnt like to be cuddled or held at all, although she sometimes will pass through our legs or lick our arms. she is very active too and loves to play games and run around, very explorative. her way of showing affection is different, she stays is a close distance when she is on a good mood and maybe lets you pet her.

I think males and females like attention almost equally, but it seems like males like being pet more. I have 3 females, 2 are fixed and we're getting the other spayed in 2 days. She's sometimes a lap cat but if you put her in your lap she won't stay. It's basically the same with the other 2. I have 2 neutered males and one of them is very attached to me. He's a huge lap cat and likes sitting on us a lot and I've had him for almost 10 years, we got him when he was a kitten. The other one isn't way too much of a lap cat, he just all of a sudden sometimes wants to sit in laps, he did that today, he hasn't sat on a lap in forever. He loves coming up to you to be pet. I don't mind too much if I have a male or female but I kind of prefer males, they sometimes seem to be more friendly.

Read many interesting comments here after watching the video. I have had cats for 65 years (!) and have had cuddly snugglebugs of both sexes. To me a cat really makes a house a home! My last 2 females have actually been the most affectionate of all the cats I've had and both were extremely attached to me; we just seemed to understand each other! Both were talkative and would greet me if I came in the room or caught their eye, would follow me around or sit and gaze lovingly at me from across the room if I was seated. Most of the time they would be on my lap or lying down close to me if I sat down though, purring. Still miss both my "babies." Had to have the second one put down recently at age 18. The other little female lived to age 21. (Owned them one after the other.) Rest in peace, Spotty and Miette! You are missed and will never be forgotten! Dave's wife
