I disagree that the Instructors are nicer to the men. I've been an LPN for 23 yrs and some are fine and some openly do not like men and make us miserable.

When I went to nursing school the first time, I was failed out by a female instructor who openly spoke about hating men. During the first class of the program, they showed us a video that described nursing blatantly as "women's work." It all depends on where you go to school and who you get. This is a hasty generalization at best.

The problem with heavy lifting is that it takes its toll on your back. Now I almost always get assistance from a co-worker. I've had to do rehab because I tried to do lifts that were harder than expected and doing more than my fair share of them. Use the hoyer lift. Use gait belts. Use walkers. Get 1 or 2 people to assist you with a difficult or heavy transfer. It's not worth the risk to your back.

When I was in school, there were about 35 total students in my class and only 4 guys. Men in nursing is a much more common thing nowadays and I think society in general has been more exposed to it. I grew up in a small town and even to this day people there assume that if a guy goes into nursing that he has to be gay (not that there's anything wrong with that~Jerry Seinfeld). Im actully finding that an area I work in CVICU has almost 50% men now. In fact on some shifts the female nurses are the minority.
@NurseBass9 жыл бұрын
That's pretty interesting that you're seeing such a high proportion of men. It really gives you an idea of how far society has come in this regard. But yea, I don't really think that we face the same time of criticism today as others did in the past as far as being a 'man in nursing' goes. And in all honesty, considering the work that the job entails, it isn't such a stretch of the imagination to think that men might do it. I think those who criticize have that image of what television paints Nurses to be and doesn't really have a clue as to what Nurses really do. Heck, I honestly didn't even know what Nurses really DID 2 years ago. It's insane.

Keepit Real, RN I graduated in 2001, and it was right around the time when a lot of males transitioned from other professions. Firefighters, cops, IT people, etc. Also, my first job offer out of school was for $18/hr base pay. Now we’re over twice that, and RNs can start around $65-70k, which is drawing more males into the profession. Just as more female docs is a great thing, more male RNs is, as well, IMO.

I am a powerlifter and I train 4 times per week (usually takes more than a week, though). I train heavy and I want to know how physically demanding in either Nursing school or being a male nurse. I do have enough strength to work in physical demanding jobs, but if it requires physical demand often, and heavy, it might be difficult for me to keep up with my powerlifting career (I do take break between lifting days, though). Can you elaborate what type of physical things are done per day? I am currently in college and thinking about switching major to Nursing.
@NurseBass9 жыл бұрын
+SpiritWaker The most physically demanding things as a Nurse are being on your feet for the majority of your 12 hour shift and lifting, pushing and pulling patients all shift. Also, the simple fact that you're doing all of this for 40 hours a week is physically exhausting. It's much more demanding than it sounds. But tons of people still find time to work out and stay active while working as a Nurse. However, I can't really say how it would affect a powerlifting career. You can always go shadow a Nurse and actually see what their job requires. :D
@paspep8 жыл бұрын
+SpiritWaker depens, According to me, being a nurse is 99.9 % mental work. Before i was nursing, i worked in the bush as a logger, and most of my days off as a logger were way much physicaly demanding compare to a working nursing day. As a nurse, you just walk all day long, you dont have to break you back lifting heavy weights in a steep hill on slipery ground. the worst i have seen is to move some patients, but you have equipment and help. So basicaly, i think you ll have no problem at all to physicaly match the job. A day of work is nothing for somebody who trains. Nursing is in fact the easiest job i have never done (physicaly), mentaly, it is another challenge

Born To Run Barefoot.... There are women that have respect for their husbands and do not allow other men seeing their body no matter the reason.... Same with some men... I refuse female providers it is way easier on me to be labeled a misogynist, that to deal with the bullshit. I worked in a hospital, I know what needless bs that happens (Yes I reported it all yet nothing was ever done as the same bs continued)
@raimusprime79086 жыл бұрын
@@helookalikaman79 Agreed, cultural issues like you mention but also just generational "stuff". i had an elderly lady (on chair alarm) keep getting up but when i walked in and asked if she needed help (to the toilet from what i deduced) she sat back down and said no. repeat. that's when i asked her to wait and i ran and grabbed a clinical mate who is a girl (i'm a boy) and said patient finally got relief. *shrugs* i get it, it's not me as the individual (had zero contact with patient prior) but just the patient's "generational/cultural upbringing". i don't take offense. i can only imagine what women have to go thru in male-dominated professions (e.g. police, engineers, firefighting, military, etc.). i'm pretty sure they have it rougher than i (we) do. :/
@helookalikaman796 жыл бұрын
@Raimus Prime... Respectfully in a medical setting have you, a guy, ever have a female in total meltdown directed at you? I have, and trust, women's issues are (neither gender should have to deal with this treatment) always focused on, men are in a blanket statement, usually ignored. He is told to man up, and deal with it... But they get pissed when a male patient does not back down. for example I had to have surgery, planned for late in the year (obviously not urgent) throughout the year the doctor, and the surgical center were reminded, and promised all male care (groin surgery) Upon being called back, I was given a female nurse, after asking NUMEROUS times, where my nurse was, or if she was my nurse she finally answered, I told her that I was promised ALL MALE care.... This led to the biggest feminist bs MELTDOWN, I have ever seen, even in movies/videos or on the net... NO joke. Even the charge nurse was looking at her like she had 3 heads... I worked it out with the charge nurse, I know when I was knocked out, they still sent in the female nurses, and looking back at it, I should have just left. The reason I didn't, was I would LOSE all my vacation time I had built up for the surgery. I wouldn't have enough vacation hours in the beginning of the year to do it, and I couldn't wait another year for surgery, I had pushed it out as far as I could already.... It was and would still be in my best overall interests to have walked out... The loss of money in vacation hours would have been the smaller cost.... Again respectfully " i'm pretty sure they have it rougher than i (we) do. " This isn't the case, IMO you and the rest of men on the planet we are programmed to think that. If a female patient has any little complaint against ANY health professional, and the hospital doesn't fire the employee (regardless of title) there is a guaranteed protests, as there is a MASSIVE resources for a female to be helped. Here a man that complains a female healthcare professional does something bad, something outrageous more than likely the man is told to either man up, or they tell him she will be disciplined but it will be a slap on the wrist... And if he is told to man up, there is no resources to help him... It is sad, and it royally sucks.... I have to get going, when I get home, I will reply with a Emergency Room incident.... just makes my blood boil
@helookalikaman796 жыл бұрын
Adding the Emergency Room bs... Note ALL patients should be treated as human and keep their dignity... Anytime a female patient came in, in full code, the nurses would keep the drapes closed, and while changing all male providers are kept outside the curtain.... Again in FULL code, they keep the males out even when every second counted. Anytime a male patient came in, in full code, Just like the women came into the Emergency Room, NO curtains were pulled shut, the male patient is mauled by the female nurses ripping clothes off and putting all the EKG leads on, setting an IV etc. Then one "nurse" (she doesn't deserve that tittle) went to place a urine cath, in the FULL view of ALL, nurses, doctors, other patients, and those patients visitors.... She gets the cath kit that apparently didn't have the lube packet in it. Instead of walking the 5 feet over to the med room, she just rammed the cath into the man without anything, no lube, no pain meds, no nothing... This particular man was having a full blown heart attack, I cant even imagine the pain he was going through, however as this cath was rammed into him, he jumped off the bed in pain... I reported this bs, not a damn thing happened.... Hell another male patient came into the ER, again full code, and yes again no curtains, no male nurses, this man was being undressed in front of everyone, but this man was not wearing underwear.... He while passed out, was being made fun of, in the DISGUSTING manner... That is all the nurses would talk about.... Yet when females were not wearing any, there was no jokes, no making fun of her.... again reported, again nothing happened. So honestly no, I do not think women have it worse than men, it is just socially acceptable to protect women, to fight for their rights and their modesty... And it is sadly socially acceptable to give men NO decency no modesty and if he speaks up (if he can) is told to man up.... Not what I would consider being treated like a human. Hell going back in the 60's (if not further back) if a female nurse would be taking care of male patients, if any had an erection they would use the spoon to hit it so he will no longer get an erection while in her care. (A nurse ever tried that bs with me she wouldn't have to worry about getting into trouble, she wouldn't be able to talk) So thinking in the bigger picture, thankfully male patients are being treated better than we were in the 60's...

Also what made you wanna become a nurse?

@ShawnandStefan Sad... We really need more male nurses, especially for us males that are NOT comfortable with female nurses be it the respect of only our wives (or husbands etc.) that see our genitalia, or like me, tired of the BS, as it is easier to be called a misogynist etc. than to deal with that bs.... As for seeing nude men, you would get used to it, as a woman getting used to seeing nude women. I had to get used to females being undressed, didn't like it, but I had to treat the patient I took that oath, and I took it very seriously. Just treat the patient with respect and you can get through a lot of "unpleasant duties" of the job without to much discomfort.

Some people will be more comfortable being taking care of them. Doctor/nurse or psychologist in particular. Not all gynecologists are men or women, a lot of people have a female general practitioner. I go to a center and get an appointment with whatever doctor available but not everyone is as chill as me. One of my friends works at an elder-care place and he gets some cheeky stuff sometimes.

They can make gay jokes but I look at statistics and women out number males 9-1 for a single guy it may be nice being around women who work hard and have similar career interests. I'm also getting a BBA which opens management opportunities management jobs in hospitals pay the big bucks.
