@menllenium5150
@menllenium5150 2 жыл бұрын
There's no need to justify it. It's supposed to be nonsensical. Think of it as a campy send up to The Beyond or any Giallo or Aregento supernatural movie. Just sit back, don't think about it, and laugh your ass off. Like most of those SOV movies we found at the video store in the 80s. None of that made any sense, but we still found it fun as hell.

It was a tumor and your a 120lb person with no muscle mass and you sister is for sure dead from all that internal bleeding AND no one is going to believe you didnt just murder 100 people. James wan is a director who is very intentional and pays attention to very close details. I think this movie was a love letter to 70s and 80s slasher movies especially Italian slasher movies (especially when it comes to the almost comical acting, cheesy screenplay and cheesy camera shots). I loved it but I can completely understand why someone may not feel the same way. I can definitely see this movie getting a huge cult following in the near future. People saying they saw the twist coming: Was there ever really a twist to begin with? I think it was more of just a mystery unfolding. I mean the movie is called Malignant, they say in the cold open "it's time to remove the tumor." The mystery was chipped away at throughout the movie intentionally. Before the movie even started I was speculating about what it was going to be about just from the title alone! I got kinda close! Does that mean I got "the twist" ? NO!

*SPOILERS* I actually predicted the twin moment from the very beginning. The title, the fact that Gabriel ran backwards and Madison saying, "He's always been buried in the back of my head." BUT it still surprised me in a, "Wait, really?" kind of way. I enjoyed this film quite a bit. My grandma and I watched it in a virtually empty theater with two other couples, who left midway through, which made us enjoy it even more. It was so outrageous, but I was kind of expecting and wanting that when I walked into the theater. I think if you are familiar with shock cinema of the '70s and '80s, or James Wan as a filmmaker, then you should know that he was sitting in his director's chair, watching every scene through the monitor with his tongue tucked firmly in his cheek. It feels like an ode to Wan's early films, as well, in some ways. Especially Dead Silence, in the way that it simultaneously takes itself too seriously and parodies itself, with its flashy editing, overdramatic performances, increasingly absurd narrative, and musical stings so perfectly timed as to be comedic. Seriously, the way James uses the same score with each twist reveal HAD ME REELING; it's the biggest indicator that this film is self-aware and totally poking fun at itself. All that being said, however, I totally understand why people don't or won't enjoy this film. It's most definitely not for everyone. I went into this film wanting exactly what it gave me, because I'd heard comparisons to Basket Case, so that gave me a bit of an advantage, I suppose. But even my grandma enjoyed it, although she didn't know what the hell was happening. We laughed and talked about it all the way home, lol

I went into this movie completely blind, I actually thought it was going to be a straightforward, chilling horror movie. Then while I was watching I kept noticing these subtly comedic moments, like one of the cops eating a lollipop, the comments of that CSI girl that had a crush on the sargeant, or Sydney bringing up psychics during the interview in the police station. Those were my clues that the tone of this movie is going to be somewhat goofy and once I had that squared in my mind I had a LOT of fun with the rest of the movie. I think the main reason a lot of people ended up hating Malignant is because they came in with the wrong expectations. And yes, the over-the-top score made me LOL a couple of times too, the way it kept playing everytime something big happens 🤣🤣 it was hilarious.

I felt like this was definitely an homage to the Italian giallo films from the late 70's and 80's. The intro with the comically bad acting really reminded me of Mario Bava or Dario Argento as well as the close ups of the killer's hands and the creepy phone voice. 'Frozen, but make it campy horror' While I found this movie funny, I hated that it was misrepresented in the trailer as being a serious horror movie. My main issues were with the some of the CGI, the 'surprise' reveal, and the very very odd score, which kinda ruined it for me - music is huge in most movies for me, and the music in this took all the scare out of it. I don't normally have an issue with the scores in his movies... but this did not do it for me. The acting was also terrible and I couldn't stand the weird romance thing between the detective and the sister after he sees her in a princess dress 🙄

I wouldn't disregard this as just a silly fun horror movie. Personally, I trust in James Wan. He does everything purposefully, and this film in particular seems like a slap to the face on all the "artsy" and "serious" horror of the last decade (you don't have to be serious all the make to make a great artfull film). Also, it's a meta commentary on his career (there are nods to every single one of his movies) and cinema as a whole (references to the Exorcist, Matrix, Fight Club, etc). I'm not in love with every choice made in this movie but I got what Wan was going for and I really loved how everything turned out.

I was truly wondering if this was a parody of James Wan's previous works. I'm in the camp of it was terrible, but I think I went into it with the completely wrong mindset. The beginning also threw me off as it seemed like it was going to be a Diana-esque monster a la Light's Out. Then it completely changed, and just became STUPID. The "twist" was incredibley predictable, and the movie just kept going on and on and on. sorry for so many comments, but in what world did this movie become a "straight up action movie"? There are 2 "fight scenes" if you want to call them that, one is literally 13 seconds long, the other (if you want to count all the way to the chair throw LOL which is being generous) is 3 minutes long. The jail scene I think has much more of a slasher vibe like all the other kills in the movie, but aside from that stuff it's more of a campy thriller/mystery with some horror elements. I feel genuinely bummed when people say things like "the tone of the movie changed and i was upset because i didn't expect that". I feel like this attitude is what makes producers continue to pump out boring stuff and unwilling to take risks. I just don't get how you can critique this movie for having fun and surprising changes in tone (which totally make sense within the narrative imo), none of which are a transition to a "straight up action movie" (minus the very brief couple scenes I mentioned), which in my mind also really surprised and delighted me because they were so punchy and brief and unexpected. Anyway, obviously not trying to change your mind but just confused by your take, I guess. No disrespect at all, plus you'll get lots of youtube algo comment engagement lol

Taking a horror movie seriously is not something I even care about. How many people watch a gory horror movie and say it has great kills. . I don’t think they enjoy the actual act of killing. In horror you suspend your beliefs and enjoy just being scared. I think Malignant was just a wild ride and was purposely over the top taking from many horror genres especially Italian Horror Slasher Movies. The gore, the dark shadowy killer and the use of blues and reds in the coloring of the scenes. There was no slow parts. It was non stop action and to me it was terrifying. I loved it.

James Wan made a bold campy horror film and is laughing at reviewers like this who can’t grasp why he didn’t make the formulaic movie they expected and are now mad at him for it. For me it was a thrill ride, I too disliked some aspects of it but to say it was a failure is ridiculous because of how entertaining it was. This will have a cult like following and hopefully opens the door to more original wild horror films in the future.

I completely agree with you. I genuinely enjoy James Wan’s other horror movies. However AS SOON as i saw that “Gabriel” wasn’t a entity and was a living breathing person or thing.. it took me out of it. I wanted the horror i saw in the trailer 🤷🏽‍♀️ i wanted a suspenseful, new entity to be scared of. The action scene also upset me, the fact that Gabriel was using her body made it boring to me.. idk i wanted like a deep back story or something. Also is Gabriel a demon? Or like what is he i know he’s a tumor but he looked like a demon tumor to me 😂 i just needed better story. Also why did the lights flicker when Gabriel showed up… AGAIN IS HE SUPPOSED TO BE A DEMON?? 😭😭 these are the thoughts i had yelling at the screen. I just want a regular, actually scary horror movie.

He developed powers when the doctors electroshocked him. I get that you don't like it, it was marketed really different but I trust in James Wan. He does everything purposefully, and this film in particular seems like a slap to the face on all the "artsy" and "serious" horror of the last decade. Also, it's a meta commentary on his career (there are nods to every single one of his movies) and cinema as a whole (references to the Exorcist, Matrix, Fight Club, etc). I'm not in love with every choice made in this movie but I got what Wan was going for and I really loved how everything turned out.

You got a very fixed and standard idea of what a horror movie should be. At least you realized that most of the problems you got with this movie, were on such ideas and not on the movie itself. That kind of sincerity is appreciated.

I love this movie! although I definitely didn’t expect it, the trailers definitely made you think it would be a certain type of horror movie so I get why ppl would be disappointed but honestly it’s such an easy going movie I can see myself seeing it multiple times and not get tired of it. It’s definitely going to be a comfort movie for me, one I can put on while doing chores or just want something to watch. It’s might be one of my favorites of the year, Candyman was more disappointing for me than this movie 😬

@@chanelhenderson8460 ok so I loved the cinematography, acting, social commentary, the kills etc. of Candyman but I wished it was longer, it felt rushed towards the end. They could have gotten to the point a lot earlier in the film and we could have seen the new candyman in action. When it concluded, to me, it was just starting to get good because I wanted to see more from the new Candyman. It left me feeling underwhelmed and disappointed bc I wanted/expected more which caused it to not have satisfying conclusion for me. I’m sure they’ll make a second part which is why they left the ending almost as a cliffhanger but that’s the reason I didn’t absolutely love it.

@@Saaxmantha I see. It was announced though about 2 years ago this was a dirext sequel to the 1992 version but they did re imagine the legend they made Candyman more of an avenging angel of death instead of a heartbroken spirit out for revenge. That's why William Burke wanted to keep the myth alive he wanted Candyman to save the neighboorhood from gentrification

I watched this movie in theatres after watching the trailer. I was so fucking hyped for this one and I love love love James wans work…I fell a sleep through this movie😬🤷🏼‍♀️I was so so bored. I could tell what the plot was about at around 45mins-1hour hence why the reveal didn’t reveal me anything. I thought the creativity was a waste. I thought the setting was boring and predictable. The action scenes and ‘horror’ elements were meh. The best thing about this movie was the fact the wig on Gabriel wasn’t even glued down. I appreciated James concept but the excecution just was not for me. This is a drama/action movie and I just wasn’t here for it

I think you should be honest and brutal but I think all reviewers, not just you, shouldn't tell people to not see a film. And that may be redundant because people watching your opinion may see the movie anyway. But it does bother me when any reviewer (any reviewer) tells people to not see something just because they did not like it. If you want to qualify that by saying 'if you don't like children being hurt, then this movie may not be for you", that is something that is helpful for someone watching a review, but flat out saying "don't watch this" in general I think is bad form for a film reviewer. You are making a decision for everyone based on your own opinion which is completely subjective. Regarding this review in particular, I loved Malignant myself but I have no ill will or trash talk for anyone that disliked it, as long as a reviewer you have those reasons outlined in a productive way that will encourage conversation and not something like "I hate this so should you and BTW, don't watch it", that would be problematic. Thanks for this review as I do want to hear others perspective without being told to 'not' watch the film. I take the Joe Bob Briggs perspective, even if he gives the movie 1 star, he always says "Joe Bob says 'check it out'".

Since you asked for opinions, here is what I found interesting about your review, and it is fascinating to me. Nearly everything you found to be a negative attribute about this movie I found to be a positive. I think part of it is that I feel I like a more wide range of horror movies (in the sense that I like everything from Universal Monster Movies, to 1 star made for Amazon horror films). You admitted in this video that you have a particular taste in horror and this movie did not check any boxes for you. This is COMPLETELY understandable. I think the only way you in particular would get a good vibe from this movie is if you were able to LIKE (not just appreciate) what the movie was doing. One example is that this is a MOVIE, capital M Movie. There is no pretense that this movie is trying to (booming narrative voice!) 'create a universe were tumors have the ability to take over peoples bodies!", this is a capital M Movie - as an example, the unrealistic lighting, the 'bad' acting, the camera shots that are there just to impress the viewer (that overhead shot I just did in the house, cool right [wink]), the plot twists that do not make sense when you think about them for 5 seconds. This is a film (IMO) that the term 'suspend your disbelief' was made for. That is the initial 'hump' I think that needs to be traversed in order to like or love this film. There are other 'humps' as well but I am not sure anyone will read this so I will not write here for an hour! :) I am glad you posted your opinion and appreciate hearing why this film did not work for you. When I choose reviewers to watch I like to watch the ones that have similar opinions as myself so when they recommend or give a good review to a film I have a good sense that I will probably like it as well. Even though we disagree on this film I have agreed with you plenty on others. Thanks for your honestly.

As a horror writer I always look at the writing first. That said, I made it 10 minutes before shutting this trash off. I give anyone who stuck with it credit but for those who watched the whole thing all I can say is every one of my fellow indie horror authors shut it off inside of 30 minutes.
