this is yet another one of those horror movies that separates fans of the genre, and lately it's looking pretty judgey. please be respectful of others in the comments, and recognize not everyone is going to agree with you either way, keep the genre fun! it's entertainment at the end of the day.

The first kill was definitely my favorite. My biggest complaint about this movie is how much damage Leatherface took in this movie and how intelligent he is. Leatherface is essentially a normal big guy who has the mind of an 8 year old, he's not supernatural at all nor does he lay traps for victims. 5 rounds of buckshot, a knife to the gut and a chainsaw to the face yet he still walks away like nothing happened!

Yeah, I was fine with leatherface being intelligent when it came to killing. I mean this is an older leatherface who's been doing it for years. And while yeah he basically is mentally a kid still means he can learn. The supernatural stuff tho was kinda iffy. Like he got hurt from a little metal object, and almost got beaten by a dude even when he got the jump, to a full on immuned to bullets.

Same way I feel about Dewey in Scream 5 , when it was revealed that a 70 pound waif, frail bones, took him out making the whole scene a joke in retrospect. Frail bones was eating those punches and going toe to toe like it was nothing. One hit and frail bones would have folded. It was the OOH LET'S KILL the Legacy character for dramatic impact, and find the cheapest way to do it. The reveal ruined it. dumb. And delusional Scream fans still think that was a great send off! Yeah, but even the original movies showed him to be immortal. The sequel from 1986 had him get a chainsaw right through the torso and spine with his stomach ripped open and he was still on his feet. The third movie had him get bashed in the head eleven times with a rock (at least in the unrated version) and seemingly drown in a river and still popped up at the end good as new. So what they did here is nothing new.

I loved the scene where one of the sisters is trying to go down the stairs, and she decides to jump from the 1st floor into the lower section of the stairs - and then the camera went up to reveal leatherface at the top, with his clothes still swinging from the movement. Also loved the attention to detail - in one scene they film a close up of the chainsaw, and it's vibrations make the little pieces of glass from the car window crumble.

I agree the story might not have been amazing for this one but you gotta admit the gore and the small little details they added are pretty cool apparently they even got to use one of the original chainsaws used from the original in this too. Personally I feel TCM2022 feels more like a sequal to Texas Chainsaw 3D or its own storyline on its own. You could say the reason Leatherface took his mothers face is because 50 years later this is Alexandira Daddarios character as Leatherfaces new caretaker whom tried to wean Leatherface out of his old ways by turning their mansion into an orphanage which would explain why the old lady in 2022 kep saying she had the deed to the house (cause she does and did) and its the emotional attachment for leatherface when Alexandira Daddarios character died he snapped again and took her face so they could always be together even after she died cause the only one who truly loved leatherface was Alexandria Daddario, she even helped free him and kill the man that wronged their family.

The Sally character was the one clear aspect of the movie I disliked. There was not enough development for an iconic character in this franchise. The original TCM is still the scariest movie I've ever seen, and what blows me away about it is how little gore there actually is. The terror comes from the fact that anyone could've stumbled into that situation, and that we were watching something it feels like we shouldn't be because of how horrifying it is. This new one put so much emphasis on the blood and gore that I, a horror fan who gets scared when my fridge makes a random sound at 1 a.m., barely felt any tension or fear the entire time. I know the sequels included a lot more blood and stuff, but I think this new one especially just kind of ignored what made the original so scary. (Also Sally Hardesty didn't jump out a window three times and survive 24 hours of hell on earth for this film to disrespect her like this!!) I thought the actors did a good job with what they were given but not having Leatherface have a family to bounce off of also weakened this imo. Thanks for another great video Sarah! ❤️

Gen-Xer Old Gal here, remembering the 80s, when I had to deal with twenty questions and then still be told that I "wasn't a horror fan". Since then, I think anyone who likes some type of horror is a horror fan. And not liking (or experiencing) every single thing doesn't revoke your card. I was disappointed in this new TCM, but I did think it was absolutely gorgeous to look at, and that gore was * chef's kiss *. You liked it? Awesomeness! You didn't? Yeah, I get it. But we're all in this together y'all. And everyone's opinion is valid, because horror, like any other art form, is subjective. 🤘🏾💗

I'll be honest - I'm really sad with this TCM film. I have a couple thoughts as to why (Just my opinion of course! I loved your takes on the film!) 1 - Everyone was wayyyy too dumb. I get it, it's part of the genre - but the OG was so scary because you could see yourself in the characters at times. There was a lot of "Well what else would you do?" in the OG. There were some funny, campy moments like when the people in the bus pulled out their phones - but for nobody to really try to fight back and just be content with getting slaughtered was a bit much for me. One of the sisters stays under the bed for what felt like half of the film as well. Hardesty's entire character was frustratingly dim as well. The only smart character felt like Leatherface... the one who is supposed to NOT be. 2 - Hardesty... just... why they do my girl like that? She's just been brooding in a crappy house in Texas? Gets a call from the shop owner, who calls... just her? She ignores the police radio when she finds the van? She makes the sisters stay in her car while she goes to... yell at Leatherface? Then he walks out and she lets him? Like what even was happening with her character. So many of the characters were super half-baked - but her especially - disrespectful imho. 3 - There were some great opportunities and moments - but poor writing really was the most impressive kill in the whole film. The bus scene was admittedly a clever idea (Outside of the bank lady not telling anybody that someone was straight up murdered). It just felt like, maybe a couple more people escaping or fighting back would've taken it to another level. Unnamed blonde victim #1 endured a tonnn of terror just to be cut with glass. Wasted that sunflower setting a bit imho. Overall, really disappointing to me - in just the fact that it was written so haphazardly for such an iconic franchise. Maybe I'm not the target audience - I understand why folks would love it - just not for me. I'm really missing intelligent writing in slasher films lately. Enough to come here and post my own rant. Thank you for sharing your thoughts in this video though! Great analysis. ^.^

It didn't work cause they didn't let Richter and the school shooting survivor girl bond any further than the scene in the garage. That was the part where we COULD'VE started to care about that girl, they're talking, she sees his AR rifle, and she reveals to him how she was in a school shooting, and Richter has a genuine reaction. The movie never let them bond and share views further than that, that one part had potential and they blew it.

As a school shooting survivor myself, the way they just randomly sprung it on us that one girl was a victim of one straight up sent me into a panic attack. It was horrible and felt like it was used solely for shock factor. Completely disrespectful and I’m more than sure that none of the people involved on this film have ever been through what me and so many others have been through and still suffer because of. Totally tone deaf and insensitive. We did not need to see that poor girl laying in a puddle of blood surrounded by other dead students. Hell, they could have even had that and kept it implied by just showing us her scar. Horror is supposed to be an escape, not a reminder. I can’t even enjoy horror movies now without my real life trauma coming back up. The beauty of the genre is that the killers are so outlandish that they’re clearly fake and a metaphor. Cannibals with chainsaws from Texas or zombie Jason or inhuman Michael Myers aren’t real and we can put our fears into them. This movie genuinely made me so upset and disappointed. If they don’t want us to take it so seriously, maybe this movie shouldn’t have tried to throw so many flimsy themes about social issues at us and shouldn’t have handled them so poorly.

Not the like "able to survive being shot and chainsawed" part, but I've always thought he was physically scarier than Jason or Michael. We're conditioned in the slasher genre to see these giants slowly and ominously walk at their victims, so every time Leatherface full on barrels at victims in a full sprint, I almost shit myself. I showed the trailer to my wife -- who is in no way a horror fan or even that knowledgeable about horror in general. Her reaction -- "This just looks really bad." Enough of a reason for me to steer clear. EDIT: Imagine if all the money and effort being thrown at these reboots and remakes were instead re-directed at new properties. New experiences. New stories. Stuff we haven't seen/heard before. Imagine that. I loved the original Halloween and the first few sequels but these new movies have extended the original premise well past the point of credulity. It's time to let them go. There's nothing left in the tank -- empty. Same with Chain Saw. My favorite 80's horror franchise was the Elm Street franchise but I'm perfectly content to never see another Elm Street movie. It's over. Nowhere else to go with it. Nothing will ever match the sheer joy (or terror) of discovery of that first movie. That story is over. Tell a new one.

I was actually looking forward to this new movie, but left scratching my head and wanting more. After the first cop kill I was like oh yes this is what I signed up for. When I say Sally was coming back I was even more on board and expecting a Halloween 2018 showdown. But with the out of nowhere death I was like what was the point of her even being there. The main hipster sister who's name I've completely forgotten was honestly the character I was lime how am I supposed to root for her. The final scene I knew what was going to happen but how it happened I was like why, the younger sister could have gotten out of the car it was going 5 miles and hour. The timeline of leather face was even confusing. It started off saying it was a true story an I believed him to be in his 30s or so so then when the orphanage storyline happened I was left wondering are there two different leather faces? Which would explain his first run into Sally where he completely ignored her I was thinking it is a different leatherface.

This was actually my least favourite TCM. This did not feel like a Texas Chainsaw Massacre to me. I was really excited to see Fede Alvarez writing this movie because he did amazing on the Evil Dead reboot (it’s one of my favourite movies), but this was absolutely horrible. I also thought the gore started off great but it kind of got really weird. Chainsaws are NOT knives, but it was slicing like a knife. Also, I disliked every single character in that movie. The political statements were also really annoying and confusing, I couldn’t tell if it was anti-gun or pro-gun. IMO the fact that the original TCM has little to no gore but still made you feel this pure disgust and sickness. The cinematography was a big part of that too. The cinematographer did amazing in this movie, but it didn’t feel like TCM. I was excited to see Fede Alvarez and Leatherface, but I did see a lot of hate so I also wasn’t expecting much. Michael Myers, Freddie, Jason, etc. just don't scare me like Bubba does. I also think the 03 remake was the first ever horror movie I watched which probably has something to do with my love for it. I was born in 98 so I didn't get around to horror movies until it came out and my mom bought it. 100% agree. Funny thing is, my expectations were already low just for the sole fact it was going straight to Netflix, and it was still worse than I thought. Don't get me wrong, there was quite a bit I liked about it, but overall, I thought the movie was a letdown. My main criticisms are: - Almost non of the younger characters are likeable (except for Lilah, she's the only one it feels like they gave any depth to). - The political message is about as subtle as a jackhammer (I get the original also had a political message, but that one was more nuanced). - It feels like Sally as a character was disrespected and treated like an idiot before they decide to kill her off (which is starting to feel like a trend in these horror movie reboots. Ironically, it was Star Wars that really kicked this whole thing off). I dunno. It feels like there's a good movie in here somewhere, but it's overshadowed by a bunch of other crap. Side note, going back to what I said earlier, am I the only one who has noticed this trend in horror movies, where they bring back legacy characters just to kill them off? It really is funny that this all started with the Star Wars sequels, since those aren't horror movies, yet Texas Chainsaw, Halloween, Scream, and other recent horror films seem to do this the most. Hell, they also like to throw in the "subverting expectations" twist that The Last Jedi popularized, where the main character finds out they're not the center of the story. Kylo Ren told Rey she's a nobody (which they retconned in the next film), Laurie Strode was told Michael was never after her, and now, Sally Hardesty finds out that Leatherface doesn't even remember her. Weird, ain't it?

After all these years The original is still so damn disturbing to watch This movie was just trash. Abunch of woke BS scattered throughout. Blood and gore don't make a good movie.. Highly disappointed in this movie

Unpopular opinion: I think Mel should have been the final girl instead of Lila. Mel was pretty smart, jumping over the banister to avoid the squeaky floorboards, tipping the mirror to let the cowboy know LF was behind the door, using the corkscrew to get out of the bus... I felt between the 2 she earned the right to live whereas Lila is just... there. She doesn't do much. I think they should have switched the ending so Lila died and Mel lived. Also, I like how deeply Mel was affected by the old woman's death, she had real guilt over it.

Awesome overview of how to appreciate the genre and to like or dislike what you want. Kudos to you! I'm planning to check this one out soon!

GOD you are so right in the beginning about people being allowed to dislike things. The conversation I’ve seen around Scream 2022 is ridiculous, it’s like if you criticize the movie you’re “proving the movie right”. You can dislike things without being one of those crazy, annoying fans lol

I’m sad that opinions about a movie have to be so judgemental. I love your videos and yet I don’t always share your opinion. I think that is part of the fun! I enjoy hearing a different opinion. Thanks for your rant! I honestly do appreciate it!

YES. THANK YOU. There has been such a large amount of people like that within the last few years, across all genres but ESPECIALLY the horror genre, that demonize and shit on people for not liking a movie… the whole “you should be grateful we even got a movie!” is such a bad mindset to have imo. Great review and 100000% spot on

I saw this yesterday, and yeah I was rather disappointed and actually thought of how u would feel since the original Texas Chainsaw is ur favorite slasher movie. Some cinematic elements were well done, but certain changes specifically at the end kindve caught me off guard a bit

We're definitely on the same page here! I'm so happy someone else felt exactly as I did about this movie- after seeing you and Night Mind both not enjoy it I gave it a shot. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it; it's definitely inspired me to watch the original now though. I recognized the scene at the end and I thought I was alone in feeling he was way too smart. That trick with the chainsaw felt very out of character from what I've heard and seen- I'm really looking forward to giving the OG a shot though! Thanks as always for your honest thoughts and keeping it positive! ❤

Honestly, I'm just tired of talking horror online, which as something that's my passion, is so disheartening. It just seems like the idea of just talking about "the two sides" is sad to see and it's so hard to find nuanced discussion in an online chat setting. I just want to be able to have a minority opinion and someone is actually interested in why I like it and not judging me as a person and my tastes because they view their opinion as the 'right' one. Great video by the way. I did enjoy the film quite a bit (didn't love it, but had a enjoyed my time with it) glad to see more people discussing the discussion issue within the genre.

I feel pretty neutral about the movie, I enjoyed it. The movie was kind of silly, they really played up the annoying millennials and the issues with gentrification. I didn’t like any of the main characters except the younger sister, I feel like the towns people were easier to side with. As most people have said I think the gore was pretty damn good the kills were great. I found the sympathizing of Leatherface odd but I still liked that it was an interesting take. Even though I’m not a huge fan of the series as a whole I still didn’t like what they did with Sally it felt underwhelming. However I still give it a solid 5/10 I did have a good time watching, it was made well technically speaking and that ending caught me off guard I’ll give them i audibly gasped. It’s definitely not the worst of the series either i think its better than some of the previous one *cough cough* 3D 😶

i really enjoyed this movie and its become a guilty pleasure and a comfort horror film for me, i dislike that they brought the final girl sally back in the movie, i really enjoy alot of the cinematography and the kills and amount of gore. I think it was a quite good time and i hope they make more tbh im a huge fan of texas chainsaw movies

I love horror movies with incredibly deep commentary or layers. I also enjoy video essays on said horror movies. I also am incredibly critical of the horror genre. I ALSO can comfortably say the scariest horror movie I've seen was All Hallows Eve... I mean, my favorite dark comedy is Jawbreaker. Ju on and Ringu are what brought me into the genre, and I loved Sadako Vs Kayako. I feel like there's too much absolutism in the horror community. I haven't seen this movie, nor do I plan to, but imo, a movie should be enjoyable. What these bad horror remake and sequels are lacking is the camp factor. A bad movie that is bland is the worst kind of movie. I'm not gonna shit on someone for liking say... The nightmare on elm street remake. Frankly I'm just tired of this era. It feels like it's neverending. The a24 family drama era coincided with the requel era... And lasted less than 5 years (imo it started in 2016 and ended in late 2020). I haven't felt true excitement for a horror movie since 2020 till now for Sadako DX. I wish we could get something new. Doesn't have to be good. Just new. And I wish we could stop with the infighting in the community.

One of the things that struck me was how the inciting event was the taking down of the Confederate Flag. It was as if doing that was a "bad" act that lead to all the death and destruction. Tie that with the messaging about guns, and it does seem to have quite a conservative messaging, which feels quite different to the original. Leatherface here is given motive.

I agree. We can all call ourselves horror fans (or fans of any genre) & be nice to each other regardless if we like or dislike a perticular movie. We can have discussions about movies rather than gatekeeping people or trying to start arguments w/ someone over their personal opinion of a movie
