This is painful to watch. The kid does not want to play football. Malik is only playing football to maintain a positive relationship with his father. His father only showed up and came around when Malik showed amazing promise as a football player. How sad? The most telling moment in the Netflix special was when his father visited him and they were eating in the dining hall. While the father and independent personal trainer were talking about his nutrition goals, the kid looked blank and dejected. Malik does not want to play football. The father is quite blatantly telling the truth when it is convenient and lying when he wants to downplay his negative influence.

Dad is killing this kid... even in this interview he took control, lead where every answer went. Then he gets asked about the helicopter parenting and immediately tries to make it a race issue... whatever man, get over yourself, you're suffering your child.

Malik clearly wanted to play baseball instead of football...and the fact he's being pushed to play something he doesn't love is probably the main reason why he's been so depressed..

I don't know the whole story but from watching Last Chance U all signs point to his father being a helicopter parent. The father appeared to not be as heavy into helping his son with sports until he's a top ranked prospect. His dad leaving him and his mom when he was little is noted as a major point of hurt in the shows story as well. Then he makes the choice to move him away from his baseball friends (a sport it appears he loves more) to push him more toward football. The problem with parents trying to specialize their kids for one sport is it mentally and physically burns out their child like Malik. The scene in the last episode when Malik and his father are in the diner talking about gaining weight had actions that speak louder than words. Look at Maliks face during that scene and tell me that isn't a kid feeling the pressure to please his father. Parenting is not easy don't get me wrong. But most of these kids nowadays have elevated anxiety and depression because of societal pressure they build up and from their parents put so much pressure on them to succeed. I hope he gets another shot and I hope he can continue to grow mentally.

Concertvids34 totally agree with you. After watching this season of the show, you can absolutely tell Malik does not want to play football. His body language showed and his attitude. He was just going with the motion. Literally. He didn’t seem motivated to get better and go D1. He even openly talked about his depression and anxiety. He is set up to fail more than to succeed. Everyone wants Mali to go D1 and pro but no one ever wonders if Malik actually wants to do that...

Oh, jeez Louise.......if your not going to tell the whole truth just don’t say anything. The kid has emotional issues and needs some help. If you watch the show he mentions several time, he doesn’t even like football. His favorite sport is baseball and he’s father made him play football. I feel sorry for the kids because he’s been asking/showing everyone he needs help but as yet no one has answered the call for him and help him out.

"The coach at IMG was an FSU guy." The pops knows he shouldn't have said that, but just a lesson for all, if you are good enough they will find you in this day and age. Of course you need great coaches to get where you want to go, but an elite talent in highschool will be able to figure it out enough on his own to get to a top University. Malik moving that far from home was his downfall at FSU? Nope, he had already moved that far in highschool. Give a kid with talent and a dream stability and friends that are there for him no matter what and he will rise to his place in the world. That's how it's done.

Kudos to the Dad. I don’t think anybody down talking this man has had a child or had children in sports. As soon as Malik’s voice started shaking the Dad took it on. I made stupid decisions at etc, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, and then started to smarten up. I did this without a father. Wish I would’ve had a Dad like this that cared and saved me when I needed it.

wow, the dad just completely dominated the conversation. you could just see on Malik's face as soon as his pops started talking - (ughhhh. well, i guess my interview here is done.) And some things his dad said just didn't come off well: "15 year old's don't make decisions in my house.", or bringing up race when asked if he considered himself a helicopter parent(that seemed like a real stretch), and the most telling was when he said Malik did not want to go to IMG but Marchell was absolutely certain it was "in his best interest" - then within a month it backfires and they move back. Clearly, this is the man who established this pattern of instability in Malik's career.

The manner in which the NFL secures their talent makes it very difficult on young men. They have to make life changing decisions as a child that really adults would struggle with. What elementary school, high school and then ultimately college to attend are huge decisions. Unfortunately as well they are often prayed upon by others that are trying to make a career for themselves. However it all comes back to support, strong family ties are needed.

To be clear: You cannot ask a black father if he is "helicopter" parent because it's racist...even if the person asking the question is a black man who may / may not be a father himself.

The dad is sketchy , Florida State has to do something to him to get Malik to want to go there . The dad seems to be in it for himself and is probably scared now because the window is closing for his son to make the nfl

I feel like he dont even wanna play football anymore. Certain coaches, certain people have that effect on people. Some people may play the sport still just off the fact they're good at it not cause its fun to them so they dont gaf fr

The fact that Marchel Henry dominates the interview proves how much of a control freak he is. Crazy dad.

How about you just let the kid choose what he wants to do in life. Obviously help him and guide him so he doesn't drift to doing bad things. More important things in life than playing sports.
