@@kristabrewer9363 In many ways, M*A*S*H was more of a reaction against the Vietnam war, more than anything else. Originally (the first 5 years or so), it was on the order of a "screwball comedy." Later on, as the show "matured," it got more dramatic, especially on certain episodes. The show would oftentimes concentrate on the horrors of war, and how stupid they are, and how the politicians in DC and elsewhere, with no skin in the game themselves, would just as soon sacrifice their fellow countrymen, in order to "prove a point," or whatever. Other shows would concentrate on the antics of the characters -- a lighthearted approach. The show ran the gamut, which made it unique in that way. Even though it could be quite dark at times, I always thought it was such a well-done show. Back to McLean Stevenson on M*A*S*H, once he left, the show got more dramatic, as Col. Henry Blake was more of a caricature than a character.

Hello, Larry is sometimes referred to as a spin-off of Diff'rent Strokes. In actuality, it was conceived as a show in its own right. After struggling to gather ratings, NBC rescheduled it to appear immediately following Diff'rent Strokes and had it written in that Larry and Phillip Drummond were old army friends (with Drummond's company becoming the new owners of Larry's radio station), thereby allowing several crossover episodes on both programs in the hope of raising Hello, Larry's popularity.

(Just an FYI: It's Carol BURNETTE (EDIT: It's actually "BURNETT" (without the final E), but that's what I get for writing the original comment at 4am! Anyway, the whole sketch series was debuted on the Carol Burnett Show, and Mama's Family was a "spin-off," although it took on its own form, once the Carol Burnett Show went off the air. Both shows had a successful run. I never watched an episode of Mama's Family; I guess I just never had an interest in it.

It feels off that Mama and Eunice are such outlandish characters and the other two are pretty much real people. Would have been better with two more from Mama's Family or, say, Flo and Mel from Alice. (Not on NBC granted, but McLean is a riot and they could've had them on the next week.)

I was hoping 'Momma' and 'Eunice' were going to be the contestants and other 'celebrities' were going to be on thre as well. But I guess it is funnier to see Carol and Vicki working together. Obviously uneven as Thelma and Eunice are near-cult characters and no one remembers Hello Larry. It's like the 'celebrities' on Gong Show appearances on Whats Happening and Sanford and Son.
