When I was pregnant with my twins, I was put on modified bed rest by my perinatologist/MFM. I had a subchorionic hematoma, placenta previa, and preexisting chronic hypertension (managed by medication), neurofibromatosis, inappropriate sinus tachycardia, and beta-thalassemia. I was forbidden from exercise and told to avoid going out in the sun (this was in South Florida). For me, it was the right move medically; I delivered at 36+2 but I was never in labor or dilated. I had an "urgent" c-section due to early signs of preeclampsia. I'm one of those rare instances in which bedrest is medically indicated.
@MamaDoctorJones
@MamaDoctorJones 4 жыл бұрын
Placenta previa and bleeding are definitely very different situations than using complete bed rest purely for preterm labor prevention. And any person’s personal recommendations from their doctor, and certainly from an MFM specialist, will always rank above me talking general information about pregnancy!

@@MamaDoctorJones I should add that I wore compression socks and kept my feet elevated, in an effort to prevent clots. I'm currently pregnant with a singleton (in a different state) and although not on bedrest, was still advised to limit physical activity, mainly because of my IST (and HPT), the slightest exertion causes my heart rate to skyrocket, which can affect the fetus.

I've known so many girls/woman who were told "you are infertile" or "you will never be able to get pregnant" only to end up pregnant. Doctors shouldn't make definitive statements like that unless it is 100% impossible for the person to not have children.

I went to school with a boy whose mom had “2” uteri. His mom successfully had 4 kids . The doctors deemed that she had a strong uterus and a weak uterus. The ones born from the strong uterus were natural births & the ones born from the weak uterus were c-sections. That information was weird to hear as a teenager and the biology teacher could not explain how it possible to have 2 uteri. Thank you for the info!

Wow only 70 cases documented? My brother and I were one of those 30 years ago! My mother has a bicornuate uterus with 1 kidney. She was told like the woman in the video that it would be very difficult to conceive. They thought my oldest sister was their “miracle baby”. 6 years later they had another girl. Then my brother and I came along. My mother carried my 3 siblings in her left uterus, I was the only one who was carried on the right. I wonder if there is any data on women with double uterus’s favoring one side over the other? Anyway with the many inaccuracies in the video I will take it with a grain of salt, but it’s cool to think I was a part of a medical rarity. Thanks mom!

I had 2 pregnancys on the left side and gave birth naturally albeit one at 32 weeks 4lb2 and another at 34 weeks, at 4lb 10. Sadly shortly after I had to have them removed due to complications. I also have a duplex kidney on the right side and hearing issues on the left. So it was good to hear that these are all connected. (Had to remove some eggs from my mother first) There were 7 fertilized eggs at the start. 4 of them died. 3 of them were left, inserted back into my mother. All three were fertilized by her uterus and that's history. She tells me she would of wanted one more, but she doesn't even have a uterus anymore.

Yeah, my sister had a retroverted uterus. In the 70s, her doctor told her "You'll never have babies." Okay, well, no need to bother with birth control then, eh? Her surprise pregnancy resulted in a daughter who was delivered by emergency cesarean when she was 7 months along. That little girl eventually went from a 4 lb. 7 oz. infant to an adult who was 6 ft. tall in her socks - taller than the brother who followed 18 months later.

This reminds me of a friend: At 19 had a large tumor removed from her uterus, informed that the scarring made her infertile. At 25 enters into a monogamous relationship, several months later goes to her doctor who says she can't be pregnant. A couple more months pass, she goes to a different doctor who says, it is highly unlikely, but let's do a pregnancy test just to cover our bases. She was 5 months along. Healthy baby boy born, she is told to love him as she will never have another. 6 months later, while using a diaphragm and spermicide, she has similar symptoms. Baby boy #2 born 7 months later. Now using oral contraceptives and diaphragm with spermicide, she begins having symptoms a year later. Baby boy #3 born healthy. She is told that another pregnancy could kill her. She plans to have tubal ligation with in the next year. Meanwhile, using the pill, diaphragm, spermicide, and condoms she gets pregnant with baby boy #4. The doctor says that it could kill her. She chooses to carry. As soon as he is delivered via c-section they do an immediate hysterectomy as it was agreed she needed it out. All boys are healthy, happy, and the youngest is in 4th grade.

I had my bladder knicked during a C-section for my 6th child. I had to come home with a catheter & bag strapped to my leg. The surgery made it difficult to step up into my house. My husband was trying to help me, and in tense situations, he goes into comedian mode. As I had one foot in the house and one down on the porch, with his arm around me, he starts to softly sing, "Does your bladder hang low? Does it wobble to and fro? Can you tie it in a knot? Can you tie it in a bow?" Good thing I had a catheter or I would have peed myself...but laughing after a C-section is painful. So, we reigned in our humor for a little while.

Specifically as a queer OB/GYN, I tell all my lesbian patients that if there is any chance they have sex with someone who has sperm, they should use contraception even if it seems unlikely (ex trans women undergoing hormone therapy can still have viable sperm). From what we know, human sexuality is incredibly fluid and fewer people are exclusively sexually active with one gender (of the multitude of genders out there) only through out their lifetimes. Also also, STI prevention and organ related cancer screening remains super important in all populations.

My periods never had a way out so filled up for years, making me be in full term labour EVERY day, ALL day for Year's! I was 14 when I went through my first surgery and after I felt like I had miscarried as I had gone though all the pain yet I didn't receive my ’baby’ at the end of it, really messed me up! I'm 20 now and have decided not to have a baby as my working uterus isn't strong enough to carry a healthy baby long enough. My doctor said it's possible but very risky and I wouldn't want to put mine or babies health at such a risk but that doesn't make a decision so big any easier.

Miscarried and then got pregnant almost a yr later. Now I have a 15 year old, a toddler turning 3 this month and a 7 month old. I had cholistasis during each pregnancy and was induced early. P.s. My mother in law also had a "wall" in the middle of her uterus. She was told it was because her mother took a form of estrogen while pregnant that was commonly used in the 1950-70s to try and prevent miscarriage. It turns out it caused birth defects and abnormalities in the reproductive tracts of the babies born from those pregnancies where the medicine was taken. I wonder if that's what caused your ex's mom's "wall"? My mother in law couldn't get pregnant with hers and had to have a surgery to remove the wall (she had one complete uterus that I think was only partially "walled" off). After that she had three boys, and healthy pregnancies (except for one early miscarriage), except she had to get circlause because her cervix wasn't strong enough to last throughout the pregnancy (also an effect of the medicine her mother took). They really thought the form of estrogen taken during pregnancy would help prevent miscarriage. So incredibly sad that it affected the fertility and general health of so many people. To make it worse, it was later proven that it didn't actually help prevent miscarriage, it actually raised the risk of it.

Carla Hallabrin Yep. I have endometriosis and PCOS and often don’t ovulate. I’ve been charting my cycles for over 12 years. It’s pretty rare that I ovulate and not know it (and from previous experience trying to get pregnant, without fertility meds, even when I do ovulate it’s never or almost never a viable egg). But still if I go to the doctor and tell them my LMP was 3 months ago (which is entirely normal for me) they’ll freak out, insist I must be pregnant, and when I balk they make me take a pregnancy test. And when it comes up negative, they assume something was wrong with the test and have me take a 2nd one. 🙄 I’m 37, have never had a “natural” pregnancy (and only one with assistance), and I still can’t set foot in a doctors office or ER without them making me take a pregnancy test unless I am actively on my period at that moment. And if I say I can’t be pregnant because I haven’t ovulated, they look at me like I have a screw loose and are debating whether I’m just stupid or if they need to call Psych down. I’ve been told by multiple medical professionals (nurses, nurse practitioners, and doctors) that it’s not possible for a woman to know whether or not she’s ovulated. It’s so frustrating.

I’m a rare case of Didelphis uterus! I am so thankful that I ran into this video. I found out when I was 25 with my first pregnancy. I miscarried at 8 weeks when I was in my way to my first ultrasound. My OBGYN at New York Presbyterian was so surprised about my uterus and she called in a ton of experts because she had never seen it in person. Sadly I had to have one uterus removed while carrying a 13 week-old embryo in 2015.

I have known, since I was about 13, I have a bicornuate uterus (the inside of my uterus is heart shaped, instead of the upside down pear it should be). The doctor told my mom I would ever have children. That was devastating for me to hear at that age. I had always wanted children. Now I have two healthy teens and am pregnant again.

Around 7:00 where you mentioned that some people dont use birth control bc “they cant get pregnant” happened to my friend! She was “told” by her doctor that she couldn’t get pregnant and didn’t ever have a period, so the first time she had sex, she actually ended up getting pregnant and was completely shocked. So she finished her Junior year of HIGH SCHOOL (she was 17) PREGNANT and gave birth in the beginning/middle of Senior year! Thank god her family was super supportive and helped her out with everything, but because of the miss communications she didnt take the necessary precautions :/ she’s happy with her lil bby boy tho! :)

I was misdiagnosed with a bicornuate/septate uterus during my first pregnancy (that ended in a missed miscarriage) and I still have no idea how the images from my two ultrasounds were seen by the tech, a radiologist, and my OBGYN and still be interpreted as a uterine malformation. I switched medical providers after struggling to get further testing and ended up with a high risk OBGYN and getting an HSG to reveal that I actually have a completely normative uterus. This was a relief, as we had just lost a second pregnancy and I was worried that it was a physical abnormality in me that was causing them. Now we are just two weeks away from our third pregnancy's due date, and are so excited for our little girl's arrival!

Adrianna Miller I have understood that miscarriage is more common than we think, as is infertility. My husband and I are super fertile, two out of three unplanned presencies. But my sister is struggling to get pregnant. I was referred to an ultrasound when I was 15 and I had my first gynecological appointment because an unusual fold looked like I in might have a second uterus. Thankfully the free ultrasound put my kind at rest and I loved on.

My Mom had the same thing happen in the 70's during her C-section with me. The paralytic part of the general anesthesia worked, so she couldn't move or say anything to let them know that she could still feel everything. Afterwards, she told them she had been conscious during the procedure & could feel everything, & they didn't believe her! But she was able to tell them things that were said during the procedure like how much blood she had lost. I asked if they sued, & she said no & they even paid the anesthesiologist bill because they were young & dumb. They heard later that the same thing happened to another woman who gave birth at the same hospital around the same time. Hearing my Mom's story has made me somewhat afraid of surgeries. I've had two surgeries & had no issues, thank goodness. But I'm always like, "Make damn sure I am really out before you start cutting on me", LOL.

Also worth noting: this is in Michigan's upper peninsula (UP) - we're rural and don't have a great health system. We don't typically have the greatest doctors like big cities do and the doctors who have been here for decades don't bother updating their practices (like them recommending bed rest). Some of it is probably added for the drama, but some of it is actually the doctors being awful. My OBGYN up here tried telling me that bleeding for 6 months with an IUD was normal and not to worry... yeah, that's not normal or healthy.

So do a lot of doctors on the subject of PCOS. I’m in my 40s. I used to have them tell me, without taking a history of my PCOS, that if I lose weight my symptoms will improve. I was an active, slightly tall 11 year old when my period started. Average weight. My periods were irregular bloodbaths. I started growing facial hair. I was tired all the time. I started gaining weight but got it under control and kept it that way through my teens. I didn’t do it smartly. I used a 1200 calorie per day diet. I was hungry and tired all the time. I really struggled to keep the weight off once I was working 40-50 hours a week, but my symptoms never got worse as I gained weight. They got better as I aged…except the metabolic issues. It drives me crazy that they never ask before assuming that my PCOS is somehow weight related. I didn’t get an official diagnosis until I was 30, but by then I had read about it and knew what I had before I marched off to the doctor, listed off my symptoms that started at puberty and had it confirmed via ultrasound. My ovaries were packed.

I was on bedrest with my first because I had a bacterial infection attacking the placenta at 25 weeks. Started bleeding, got a shot for the lungs and spent a night in the hospital with IV antibiotics, then was sent home told to prop up the foot of my bed so gravity was towards my head and not even allowed to sit up except trips to the restroom for the next few weeks with three oral antibiotics. Around week 27 or 28 an ultrasound showed the infection was dead and I was allowed to sit up slightly, but at an angle, and could move room to room but no more walking than that to give placenta time to heal. In the 30s I got put on regular modified bedrest and then at 35 I think only pelvic rest and then at 37 all restrictions lifted and she was born healthy at 38 weeks 3 days weighing 2.63 kgs.
