My best friend was "interrupted" by an old lady the other day. He was putting his biomüll into the container and, like you should - and he always does, he emptied the plastic bag and threw the bag into the plastics container. The lady saw it and was soo pleased that she just had to tell him how much she appreciated it. ☺ Imagine, a german being so happy that one feels the need to interrupt a stranger and talk to them. 😅 I thought it was just very sweet. @windhelmguard52955 жыл бұрын
the funny thing about all that is that separating your trash is pretty pointless in germany. all the separate bins are collected by the same cars and then thrown onto the same pile before it all goes into the sorting machine. the only reason why we separate garbage is because of a law that states that stores have to dispose of packing material for free, which lead to the invention of the yellow bin or sack as well as the green dot. the yellow bin is where everything that has the green dot goes and nothing else, regardless of what it's made off. this is to ensure that you are not paying for getting rid of packing material. i have seen so many people who separate garbage wrong too, here is how it goes: does it have a green dot? if yes it goes in the yellow bin, if no then is it made of paper or cardboard? if yes it goes in the blue bin, if not it's hausmüll. any separating you do beyond that is pointless.

Summarizing, it is the disregard for your civic duties and contempt for the rights of others that make people mad. German communities are usually highly organized with shared duties, roles and responsibilities. This is what makes them function so well under normal conditions. You noticed yourself that people are looking for each other and are taking care of lost gloves or stuff on the pavement. Not all of the motivation to do so is altruistic, though, there is also a part in us that makes us love to control and correct others. In exaggeration you could call it policing each others. This feature of German togetherness fades to some extent in bigger cities, where anonomity prevents sharing of responsibilities and then you see us being the hogs just as everyone else.

Since there was no on coming traffic from both directions we foolishly decided to cross anyway and when we did the girl got very furious at us shouting "do you have tomatoes for eyes?" It was funny and terrifying at the same time and it served us right. So yeah, wait for the green light before crossing, especially in Germany.:-)

I know you didn’t mean to do anything terrible, but you were actually setting a bad example for kids. We may seem 'direct' as germans cause e.g. we won't chat you up with small talk if we simply want your help for something, we just ask. But in situations like the neighbour it's also possible nobody complains for years, cause we want to keep the relative peace of living together ^^

You missed it with the last Point. The most "Bike Lanes" aren't driveable. For sure not with a lightweight Bike. To halt Distance - Abstandsgebot von 1,5m - is also a Rule for Cyclists. So you have to ride "in the middle" of your Lane of Traffic. Furthermore, the Roads ARE NOT only for Cars. So there's no Reason to get Upset.

Some bike Lanes are shared with pedestrians, and as such unsuitable for racing bikes, many are in disrepair, many end without a logical continuation, many have sudden twists and turns, slightly too high curbs at road crossings, some turn to gravel without notice. Lots of reasons why racing bikers in particular prefer to use the highway. On sparsely travelled roads this shouldn't be a problem, and why they choose busy roads, God only knows.

About public phone calls: There was times when you were silently asked to come out to the hall when there was a call for you. When mobile phones came up, people would be embarassed when they went off and left the room as quickly as possible. But today people have no shame anymore. I consider it molesting all the others when they have to listen to a "convo" when they do NOT want to. I put "convo" in quotes because it's often some monologue like "ya ... hmmm ... no ... oh ya ... no ... I dunno ... maybe ... yes ... really? ... no ... no ... why? ... ah ... aha ... ya ... point 5!! I'm a male nurse, driving to peoples for homecare. Everytime it happens that a cyclist rides his bike on the street when there is literal 10cm away a bicycle lane. I'm on a clock, stressed and these c**** are freakin me out. I have to wait until I can pass them. Everytime this happens, they steal not my, but an old ladys/man time to get ready for the day, his medics or whatelse. What I want to say is, be clever, use bicycle lane, it's saver for you, u can't cause an accident when cars try to pass you and (for your interest) u can't get caught when breaking the law by leading to an accident this way. Everyone who can't use the lane near them are douchebags, egonaniacs who don't give a shit about others, they didn't even think about it anyway what they're doing. 3 days before this comment, it happened again, a young women did this and smiled at my face as I hit the horn (awkward) driving a minute behind her .. At this moment, you as a man realise that sometimes some people deserve a straight punch in the face for stupidity and egoism even if this person is a women. That much angry you can get a german with this.

there's a whole lot more than what you mentioned in this video that makes Germans angry. Like crossing the street when the light is red even if it's just a small two way street with not much traffic. My German girlfriend got mad at me for crossing the street, when she was visiting me over here in the U.S. It was just a two way street with not much traffic, but the light was red, but no cars so I went to cross and she got mad. I think a better question is what doesn't make a German angry?

we have that dog poop issue in Austria as well...and at high frequented dog places there were installed special stands where you can get poop-bags with the sign saying "Das Sackerl für das Gackerl" .. "Sackerl" means "little bag" and "Gackerl" means "little shit/little poop".. and we make always fun about that a bit awkward sounding reminder phrase Germans would call poop "Kacke" but in Austria "K" sounds are way softer pronounced so it is spelled "Gacke" here and the ending "-erl" (but pronounced like "-al" in Austria) is the equivalent to the ending "-chen" to trivialize/belittle things and it is also used in some southern german regions near our border as well .. so we usually say in our common speech "bisserl" (but it sounds like "bissal") instead of "bisschen" or "Mäderl" (sounds like "Mädal") instead of "Mädchen" or "Katzerl" (sounds like "Katzal") instead of "Kätzchen" and "Sackerl" (sounds like "Sackal") instead of "Säckchen" and so on ......

I have a racing bycicle, too. The problem with bike lanes is that they are very often in a bad shape, at least this is my experience. The subsoil is not very smooth, there are hobbles and stuff. No problem if you ride a normal bike. But a racing bycicle doesn't have any suspension at all. Means you feel every little unevenness in your hole body. Moreover, if you ride fast, it is often dangerous at least in small towns to use the bike lanes, because pedestrians step on the bike lanes from time to time, so if there are people, I sometimes choose to go on the road because it is safer for me an the people around me ;-) I didn't understand these things until I started riding racing bycicle. But now I try to find a compromise. If the bike lane is ok, I use it, but if there is few traffic and/or many pedestrians, I chose the street.

I love the little German/Austrian type house in the background. All of these annoyances also apply here in Vienna, Austria; where I have lived now for 12 years. Here are a few things that also annoy Austrians: 1) Eating on the public transportation system. Definitely in the subways, since it is posted that it is not permitted. 2) Bringing your dog onto the public transportation without having a "Beißkorb" (muzzle) on the dog. This is also a law. 3) Dumping special litter into the litter bins. There are special areas where such things like computers, cooking grease, electronics, paint, aerosol cans, etc. go. 4) Having loud conversations or talking loudly on the public transportation. 5) People wearing heavily loaded backpacks on a crowded public transport. 6) People refusing to give up the seats reserved for handicapped/elderly/women with babies. This is very rude when a person who is clearly not handicapped is taking up that reserved seat, and causes one who needs it to find another place to sit. I once was once accosted by a middle-aged foreigner who angrily slapped my shoulder when I asked if I could sit in the place where he was sitting (reserved). It is normal and even announced on the loudspeakers that you might need to give up your seat for someone needing it. I walk with a crutch, so I find it very annoying when I enter a crowded tram to see a teen or someone who does not need that seat, and refuses to offer that seat to me. However, I do find it especially pleasing when I need to stand, the reserved seats are already taken, and someone offers their seat to me. 7) Standing in front of the doors of the public transports so that people cannot exit easily. 8) People rushing to get into the elevators who could easily take the stairs or the escalators, making women with baby trolleys, wheelchairs and other handicapped people waiting for the next available elevator. 9) Smokers who toss their cigarette butts on the ground. We have special receptacles for that. 10) People who leave their trash sitting on benches, the ground, or elsewhere for someone else to throw away. I love it that Austria is such a clean country. We like to keep it that way. We have litter boxes everywhere, so there is no excuse for being untidy. 11) Having a beggar approach you in the public transports, asking for money. Sometimes such people will play musical instruments while begging, which is an additional annoyance. That should do it for now, though there may be more, I am sure. :-)
