I took video of them growing through the summer. They produce massive head, and do get really tall.

You've inspired me to begin documenting my sunflowers' journey through this summer. I planted seven different varieties 36-days ago, including a couple Russian Mammoths. Just checked them with a tape measure, and my Mammoths are not among the tallest at this point. I've got Sky Scrapers and Grey Stripes which are 20-24 inches tall just 5-weeks after sowing. My Mammoths are only about 10-inches tall. Maybe they'll catch up. Maybe some of the others just like my conditions better than the Mammoths do. Who knows? They are not the smallest, just not close to the tallest. Thanks again for sharing and inspiring. I'm going to dust off the camcorder tomorrow and start my own documentation. :-)

Growing sunflowers for the first time this summer. I started growing one in April and planted another in June. They have reached about equal height, around 5 feet or so. I assume they are mammoths as they look identical to your sunflowers. It has been a joy watching them grow from tiny seeds to beautiful plants with thick, healthy stalks. I am so excited for them to bloom. It's like Christmas to me.
@MidwestGardener
@MidwestGardener 8 жыл бұрын
I completely understand your excitement. You take care of them for months, and then when they bloom, even though mother nature did most of the work, it is still satisfying to see. Your can be mammoths, but even sunflowers grown from the type of sunflower seeds we feed the birds, can be very pretty. Thanks for watching.

Great job, can you tell me what kind of fertilizer you have used for them. Mine are supposed to be Mammoth but I think they are so skinny compared to your stalks. I planted them 5-26-16. @MidwestGardener
@MidwestGardener 7 жыл бұрын
I'm glad that you found it helpful. I can't remember if I added fertilizer to these or not. I usually use lots of homemade compost when I plant. That is usually good enough. They also seem to like well drained soil, and I'm not sure where you live, but they also like it pretty warm/hot. Sometimes if they are planted too close to other plants, it can stunt their growth a little.

Wow- your sunflowers are gorgeous - I’m growing my first sunflower circle and they are 7 ft tall but I’m growing 4 diff kinds (my first time) and so excited but am hoping the weather holds out and no hurricanes. Already had a storm with 40 mph winds and they were really beat up for almost 2 days so a lot of their leaves were broken so I cut them off. How long does it take to dry the flowers and when do you cut the flowers off to dry? Growing Russian Mammoth, Mongolian, Skyscrapers, and little Teddy Bears sunflowers.
@MidwestGardener

@Trish, you have Mongolian giants!?!? Lucky. Growing mammoth russians, and this time, no stupid deer or chipmunks will eat off my entire crop, since the increasing wolf population of northern wisconsin have scared them off. Been a month since i've sowed them, and they're about 8 inches tall, were slow, but now fast!
@SwtTrisha8
@SwtTrisha8 3 жыл бұрын
@@weathermanofthenorth1547 Yes I’m growing 6 Mongolian giants, 6 Russian, 6 Mammoth, 6 Skyscrapers and little Teddy Bears. I ordered them on line from Amazon and don’t know the first thing about them from experience. Only from what I read. I’m curious to see the difference first hand but living here in Florida the ground is very sandy and starting out I did mix in some good soil and put some Osmocote slow release plant food and I’ve ground up a lot of egg shells and mix into the sandy ground from time to time and a week ago gave them a big drink of Miracle Grow. They are on their own now and half are 7 ft - the others right behind neck and neck. My big mistake I think is where I grew them where they are getting filtered shade until around 11 am and then start getting full sun. We had gotten lots of rain the month of June and not a lot of sun either as well which is unusual for June so I think that has held them back some. I’ll try all over again next year and learn from my mistakes this year and compare as well. So I bet Wisconsin soil is much different? And wolves roaming - wow!!! Let me know your goes. And yeah once the plants start taking off they grow faster than weeds. Love them 🌻 Good luck.

It sounds like you probably have some type of insect that is boring inside the stem. A good healthy undamaged sunflower stem is pretty solid and doesn't break that easily. I've found insect larvae in the stems before, and some sunflowers even have so much damage that they are hollow inside and will snap in half very easily. If you want to what a borer looks like, I did a video on it. The borer can be seen at about the 2 minute mark. kzbin.info/www/bejne/maHYeI1ohd1ksKs

How many days does it take for them to bloom? Finally, there's no deer or chipmunks in town here in northern wisconsin, as nearby wolves and coyotes have scared them away. All the other years except one they would make it maybe 1.5 feet at the MOST then get chomped. Been a month since i've planted them, and they are now about 8 inches tall. Were slow, but been noticing in the center what looks like cabbage, and in my experience, that's when they start to grow really fast.

Dammit, that means the sunflowers that I planted on August 1st, 2018 and hoped to bloom before frost (mid-October) probably won't have the time to open. Another "harsh" gardening lesson learned. But I had some dropped from the feeder that grew 12 inches and flowered, wasn't the miniature one either! Bizarre. But my late-planted buckwheat is doing good! It grew so fast, the local pollinators must be happy, haha! If only most nectar plants can grow as fast as the buckwheat...

Well, you've got one thing working for you. Any type of flower has a natural urge, so to speak, to produce seeds for the next generation. In order to do that, they have to produce a flower. I think it's possible that you might get lucky, but we will have to wait and see. Good luck!

I sure wish I could tell you. I planted that vine about 20 years ago, or somewhere around that time. I didn't think it was important at the time to remember the name. They are a very sweet seedless red grape.

Another question, but do ants damage the leaves? Been noticing a lot of ants on my sunflowers lately, no thanks to an anthill in the middle of the garden. Also, tip to people wondering about watering cycles: water in the morning's only!!!! If you water during daylight, then the water will vaporize, which will damage or destroy the leaves! Also, water frequently until about 5 inches tall, then it can rely on nature (unless no rain for 3+ days), and when doing so, the recommended amount per plant is minimum half gallon, although three quarters to a full gallon is recommended. Reason why they need so much water is because of their naturally high levels of oil in the seeds and plants. However, having originated from the desert, they can also be drought resistant for some time.
@MidwestGardener
@MidwestGardener 3 жыл бұрын
I've never known ants to damage the leaves. If you notice a lot of ants, it might mean there are aphids or treehoppers. Ants farm both of those for their honeydew. Check on the bottom of the leaves, that is where the ants and aphids, or ants and treehoppers will be.

@@MidwestGardener Aphids! I've actually heard about the honeydew thing from somewhere before. Also today, while inspecting my sunflowers, i saw this small green bug, with it's abdomen being white, and was on one of the top leaves. Would you know what that would be? Also, what do aphids look like?

When the flower heads start to dry up can you cut them and harvest them for next year ?
@MidwestGardener
@MidwestGardener 4 жыл бұрын
Yes you can. Of course, if you grow plants from the seeds you saved, they might be slightly different. That is because bees pollinate them, and they might have gotten the pollen from a different sunflower. They still should be beautiful though :)
