I think a lot of these crazy competitions stem from the Finnish sense of humour which seems to be drier, more surreal and self-ironic than, say, Swedish humour. (Sorry, Swedes, if I got you wrong, you are our Nordic brothers, sisters and everyone in between or outside those nominations.) I suspect this is why British comedy has always resonated with Finns.

I think one of best I have seen was based on news of weather and were it was stated that in the bible there was rain for 40 days and nights anbd that was terrible. In Finland we call it summer. But honestly speaking, when I have travelled all around in the world ( I have been in 46 countries) and someone has asked me how I would describe Finns and way of finnish life, I always say that a Finn is the guy, who is willing to pay hundred (dollars, euros or what ever currency is familiar for listener) that the another Finn does not earn fifty. It sums quite well the jealousy which seems to be time to time dominating factor of finnish mind set.

How on earth you don’t know about the buckets?! 😱😱 they are the best!!! JK they became meme when people went nuts for free buckets and the line was so long (google will tell you) 😂 and that has happened few times if I remember correctly 😅

The buckets became a phenomenon. I suspect it was mostly a shared ritual, a way for people with time on their hands to meet other people and have a chat. A bit like lonely pensioners going to the bank just to have someone to talk to - when there were still actual branches you could go to.

The history behind buckets is more of an "prehistoric" meme from time before internet. Few decades ago when Soviet Union ran out of money and couldn't pay their debts, they suggested that they could pay some of it with zinc buckets. Our country having the mentality we do, we accepted this offer and those buckets were given to the people all around Finland for free. So you see, when it comes to free buckets, it is decades old joke / meme and anyone living in Finland should honor the tradition =D

BTW when you Tim will try "Eukon kanto" competition with your wife? You know, you can win the weight of your wife in beer. I doubt it's Foster's but anyway... Also you forget couple great finnish sport events: There is also world champion competitions for air guitar playing and throwing your cellphone just couple to mention.

Yes you can use anyone you want in the wife carrying competition. And I think roles can be reversed and same sex pairs are allowed as well.
