The 'dead eye' is what makes them very creepy to me, it gives a "lost" expression, like they aren't actually seeing/focusing on anything... so weird

Yeah, I think Greg brought up a really good point here that sort of debunks the whole "omg were humans instinctively trained to be scared of something that looks not quite human in the past??? 😱" part of the uncanny valley. A lot of these uncanny valley examples look dead, or more precisely, like humans who are dead or are very close to dead, which makes total sense as to why we would be naturally perturbed by them. Our ancestors probably developed the survival instinct to avoid fresh corpses or other humans that look very sick/deathly, as to not get sick themselves.

The “dead eyes” have everything to do with the fact that cgi eyes don’t look wet and that’s why you can tell that something isn’t alive yes you can have reflections in eyes but the human eye has a certain look to it that cgi just can’t make perfect

I actually liked Mars Needs Moms. It is goofy, funny, weird, quirky.. and that hot alien girl obsessed with the 60s. Great acting from the VAs, great animation for the time. Adorable robots. Wholesome but also a few double entendres. Nice science fiction. I miss good old adventure scifi without grimdark edge loading. Always great to watch your vids Dude bro!

To be honest, Alita holds up today still. At first I thought only her face was CGI when I saw the movie in theaters. A couple of months later I was SHOCKED to learn all of her head, hair, bust and clothes were CGI, it was just incredible how far we've come

What saved the FF movie was that they didn't try to model the actors that voiced the characters, they just did their own (which Square has always absolutely excelled at). The only point back in the day that I remember being egregious was when the dude yells while shooting from the back of the wrecked vehicle. The Hulk one is honestly not bad at all except for the brief moment hat he moves as a human before the angle changes. You can suddenly see the weird floaty disconnect between the model and the environment.

funny that he says they should have used a doll for Twilight: Breaking Dawn Pt. 2. they did have a doll. and it was much worse. hence going with CGI. they say they went with that particular look because they wanted to show the baby having something like conscious thought already. since she rapidly ages and is gifted. and they can't get that look from a real baby. so i guess they went with lore accurate over authenticity.

I remember going to the theatre as a kid and watch FF: Spirit Within and being blown away with the cgi...and now it looks like your average PS3 game And Alita was superweird, they literally focused on something it wasn't unique about her: the eyes. She's known in the manga for having octopus lips, her eyes are like everybody else's in the manga, big, because it's a manga. Such a weird choice

I think when it comes to CG actors being de-aged or recreated, it’s off because it’s based off people who we know. If you created an entirely new person, maybe it wouldn’t be so odd (today).

The movements look good in most of these because it's mostly motion capture. A lot easier to capture the subtleties of real movement when a real actor is in the motion capture studio. Doesn't really help with the faces though.

No, but you are right about the eye animation, usually we have target points and we rig the eyes to follow them, those used to be animated by hand, and it lacks a lot of micro-movements, but that's not only that, in real acting one of the things that can separate good actors from bad ones are how they pause and seem to "think" before they say anything, a lot of that is conveyed through eye movement and it is a pretty complex behavior, with facial capture you get some of that but it is still pretty much in the uncanny valley yet, maybe not for long, who knows? A couple years ago we used to make fun of AI's, now here I am, a real human posting a super realistic comment, GregBroDudeMan 194K subscribers!

I don't really ever feel the uncanny valley sensation. And really, about 90% of the stuff that people have an issue with, absolutely does not bother me in any way. In fact, I can believe the character "exists" in the world they are placed in. The other 10% of stuff people have an issue with is just a disconnect feeling I get, and it's more that the CGI doesn't make the character believable. The one time I may have felt "unease" with, was when I actually physically walked past a Mr. and Mrs. Santa Clause set. They were shorter than anyone, and their staring wasn't fitting for the rest of their face.

The also did the weird de-aging thing to Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart back in X-Men 3 in 2006. Have to say, it was _very_ impressive then. I'd have to rewatch it to see how it holds up, though.

not my mans saying Final Fantasy: Spirits Within having PS2 graphics when everyone knew that movie was about a decade ahead of its time in the cgi movie department. advent children looked like a pixar movie in comparison. and it's beyond crazy that people watch Alita: Battle Angel and think her eyes is a stylistic choice or they are trying to make her a real life anime person. it's literally spelled out in the movie that she's a Martian. A literal alien from a different planet. She's not human not only in the sense of her being a cyborg (because there are human cyborgs that don't look like her) but she's not from Earth. and how many people haven't picked up on that is actually worrying and i can see why movies and games need to spell every little thing out, these days.

i think the 3 biggest factors for me is 1. lighting, 2. hair, and 3. movement, but specifically mouth movement in most cases. for example the guy in the star wars one looked so real, but something about his mouth movement just gave it away for me. theres obv more factors, like wth was that battle angel one, but those are the main ones that ive seen
