Superman fighting the World Engine in my opinion is the best "Superman" scene in this movie. It put him in a weak and painful state yet he didn't give up, rose above and overcame this impossible odd of destroying the World Engine. It showed Superman's unbreakable spirit.

To me man of steel was not a "great" movie, it was a satisfying movie like revenge of the sith, that just showed you what you wanted to see rather than what was necessarily good for the story. The reason people loved it was because of the overly dramatic "dark knight" scenes with the godly music, which I must say so myself that the score was terrific.

It wasn't until late last year when I saw it was playing on TBS that I actually decided to watch it and decide for myself how good it actually was. It's a perfect example of not letting other people's opinion of something get in the way of deciding for yourself how good or bad it is.

Man of Steel was the greatest Superman movie, but also a great movie that I enjoy watching numerous times. Superman is the most iconic superhero ever and Donner's Superman was so beloved, that Man of Steel was bound to be divisive. Superman Returns tried recapturing the Donner tone, but ultimately, it was more of a Lois and Clark movie to me. Man of Steel was a fresh new take on the character cinematically that I think Snyder actually did justice to overall. There are definitely parts I didn't agree with (Pa Kent death, rushed relationship with Lois, last drone scene w/general, etc.) but for the majority it was visually stunning, great story, and very well acted. I also love that they went for more of a sci-fi/invasion type superhero movie than just a straight comicbook movie. I got more and more from the movie each time I watched it and because of that, I am so stoked to see the same tone carried over to BvS. Favorites of MoS: Destiny vs Choice ideals between his two fathers, to which, Clark initially struggles with; Zod believed what he was doing was best for himself and his race which made him a great villain; Hans Zimmer's score; finally got realistic Superman powers (which shows how he first struggles with them all the way into too powerful to control); Superman's first flight (DBZ style) and how much he enjoyed his first flight; The fact that Zod made him kill him, which truly showed how dedicated Zod was and how devastating it was for Clark to choose to kill off the last of his kind in order to save humanity. Overall a great movie for me and even if someone didn't enjoy it as much as I did, I understand, but it's still far from a BAD movie.

+24Bit I praise it for being something completely different and Donner's Superman is one of the reasons why I think it's was so divisive. I didn't compare it to Donner's, just like I don't compare Nolan's Batman to Burton's, because they are two completely different types of movies that use the same characters. Showing him not as Super as we all know him to be was exactly what the movie was supposed to be about. His flaws show his humanity alongside his god-like alien powers. The movie is called Man of Steel because he has yet to become Superman. You have problems with it, I understand, not saying your wrong, but comparing it to other "bad" movies (fantastic four, The Hulk, Wolverine Origins, Green Lantern) I see this clearly above those. To each there own, but hopefully even if you didn't enjoy this, you go into BvS with optimism!
@sheyanderson43718 жыл бұрын
+24Bit All movies, no matter the critic, are all subjective. In the most simplistic way, good or bad, I used other comicbook movies that I consider subjectively bad myself, to show why I think this movie is not even close to bad, even if you didn't enjoy it as much as I did. So to shorten this up, Man of Steel in the majority (citing Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic critic/fan reviews) was thought of as a good movie. You sir, respectfully are in the minority. Man of Steel made more than enough money to warrant continuing on and developing this character even more. Batman v Superman being made was completely out of left field and was what nobody (excluding myself) expected from WB/DC. It has become one of the most anticipated movies ever and will truly kick off the DCEU. I will continue to love Man of Steel and Henry Cavill's Superman and have high hopes that the character will get better and better as the universe continues.
@sheyanderson43718 жыл бұрын
+24Bit The movie making process as a whole definitely has "experts", that's how we get our directors, actors, cinematographers, etc., but movies themselves are still critically subjective and their is no such thing as an "expert" movie critic. Attending/graduating film school doesn't automatically create an expert, nor does it make their opinion more correct in such a subjective matter. The only way one could quantify something subjective would be majority over minority and even then, it still doesn't become definitive, only considered. Even then, it doesn't make one right and one wrong, but it can state that Man of Steel can be considered as a good movie over a bad one.

I LOVE some of the unsaid things in this movie. For instance, that the Kryptonians used to look to expand their reach onto other worlds, but over time they abandoned that and started mining the core. And at that stage, all their under-suits are black. Like, hopeless. But of course the ship Superman found and took away produced a suit from the era when they still explored and as a race, had hope. For that reason, the suit is colorful. That always made perfect sense to me and I loved it.
@zhengyingli8 жыл бұрын
+Dylan Madd Even when Jor-El was suiting up to fight Zod, his undergarments also showed red and blue, albeit in much dark shades than Superman's costume. As hopeless as the last era of Krypton might've been, the theme of hope never seemed to have left the House of El. This movie maybe way too subtle for its own good, but that's why I love it. You can tell Snyder really respects the "show, don't tell" aspect of film making.

Why do people complain about the destruction in Man of Steel but not in Avengers
@jamesnight66168 жыл бұрын
+David Mendez Actually there is a difference there. The Dark Knight changing everything made for a compelling and interesting story. Overall a damn good movie. Fan4stick changing everything was the least of its problems, and hardly the thing people were complaining about. It was just a shitty movie from start to finish. Can't really compare.
@nmtengineer3978 жыл бұрын
+TheLad 1993 The destruction in Man of Steel felt over-the-top to the point where it paralleled the destruction from a Transformers movie. The Zod/Kal-El fight was mostly punch-punch building crash. Also, Kal-El was careless during the fight sequences, not because he was 'new', but he casually let things be destroyed that he could have stopped (example: Zod kicked a truck towards Kal-El, but rather than stop it, he let it crash into the parking garage behind him without a second thought). The destruction in The Avengers attempted to justify the situation by the team attempting containment to keep damage at a minimal, rescuing innocent civilians, working with law enforcement on the ground, etc. As far as 'real' goes, Lois and Clark's kiss was way out-of-context to the situation than any joke in The Avengers.
@jamesnight66168 жыл бұрын
NMT Engineer Well if you watch the scene where Superman dodges the chemical truck carefully, you'll notice once it explodes he looks back like "oh shit I just screwed that up..." He was so focused on Zod and the fight at hand he wasn't even thinking about his surroundings. Perfectly explained/shown in that scene. Also, the kiss with Lois (although not perfect) makes sense because it was at the end of the destruction, and it was sorta like their victory celebration. The jokes in the Avengers were way more "out of place" if you analyze the destruction actually going on. Could you imagine if right before Superman killed Zod, he had a Tony Stark one liner and said "This will be over in a snap!" And then Lois came in to throw a few more jokes around? People would've lost their minds. Marvel uses humor to mask destruction. so in the new Civil War trailer when they detail all the destruction from previous movies, the only thing I can think about it Iron Man throwing quips back and forth. They rely so much on humor and dodge the actual consequences in those movies that I really didn't care about the detailing of destruction from previous movies.

I now see Man of steel as a masterpiece of the genre. People complain about all the death in Metropolis and use that as a criticism for this movie. Meanwhile, Superman saved the rest of the world. Zod and the Kryptonians were terraforming the entire earth and Superman stopped it. The fight with Zod occurred after Superman literally saved billions of people and Zod got pissed. Superman was just trying to stop Zod. Zod led the entire fight in Metropolis. Superman didn’t want to fight him, but Zod left him no choice. Zod attacked Superman and Superman was in self defense mode the whole time. Yes, there was a lot of destruction done to Metropolis and people died, but it was Zod’s fault. Think about how many more people would have died if Superman hadn’t fought Zod. Zod would have just killed everybody in cold blood. That is proven when Zod tries to kill those innocent people, therefore justifying Superman killing Zod. Had Superman just let Zod live, even more people would have died. People are just too narrow minded. All they want is laughs when they go to see a superhero movie. If they don’t laugh much they think the movie isn’t any fun. I had a blast watching this movie. It was so much fun. Best superhero movie of all time in my opinion. Tragically underrated. Masterpiece. And I’m sorry, but this score is best score I’ve ever heard, in my opinion.

According to Snyder, the skull was one of the first beings of their civilization. Since their culture produces perfectly bred beings, all genetic material of their species comes from this original being. Each piece of the creatures skeleton was taken to different regions of the planet as a symbolic form of unification, but the council at the beginning of the film was the most powerful nation on the planet, so they got to keep the skull to signify their power. Each nation on Krypton wrote inscriptions on their bone pieces to show who controlled that piece. This was all explained by Snyder and other material that was released with the film.

I just love this movie, the character development and the quieter moments are so beautiful. And the score is one of the best. Those piano ques makes me so emotional. Even the action is so great. Plus it made me care for the character of Superman than any other live action or animated version

I loved this movie the first time I watched it, but now, I just like it. I think it's a flawed, but decent film. Personally, I think it gets overhated. It's no masterpiece, but chill, guys. Great action, supporting cast, soundtrack, opening, etc. I like how this movie was more first contact/sci fi epic before superhero movie. Whine all you want about the CGI, but Krypton is fucking beautiful. However, I agree with people that the narrative became unstable in the 2nd half. Some dialogue by Goyer was bad like "I think he's kinda hot", "DICKSPLASH!", etc. It also suffers from being overly expository. I also didn't like the shaky cam and the rapid zooms, which is why it's awesome that Larry Fong came back to work with Snyder on MoS. On another note, laugh at the Marvel shills who are here in full force trying to troll John. AWWWW, did he hurt your feewings when he trashed AoS? Btw, it's their fucking decision to choose which movie to do a commentary on.

Jacob Pamaj It's all just bad writing imo. Supes doesn't need a year one plot. If I wanted to see Superboy I'd go watch Smallville.

+dragonrings14 Tell me, how would Superman beat Zod without killing him in that situation? It's like your average Joe on this planet taking on the top Marine General on this planet in hand to hand combat. Clark was already severely outmatched. But tell me, how would he solve that problem? No prison could hold him and the Phantom Zone was no longer an option lol

I really liked MoS the first time I saw it, and I fell in love with after watching it again a couple more times. So I wen't back to check what the general criticisms were, since the reception was lukewarm at best upon release. So the most common "criticisms' I could find from RT was that it wasn't warm and fuzzy like the Christopher Reeves movies. If you don't like the movie because you have a different taste in tone, all power to you, but if your "professional critique" about a film is that it's not like an older version you enjoyed, you just terrible at your job. Clark Kent is a man struggling to find his place, being taught over and over again that he doesn't belong, and struggles to save the very people who are afraid of him. This isn't a warm and fuzzy reality to be in. What purpose would jokes serve if it only worked to belittle the seriousness of the situation Clark was in ? I love comedic moments, and I really enjoyed most of the Marvel movies, but I don't need all my movies to be chucklefests.

Ahmed Mostafa you have no idea what you're talking about if you think people's problems with the movie are "because it isn't like the reeves movies" then you are delusional

LoN3wOlF5tudi0s Lack of character development? What? So, those flashbacks served no purpose then... okay. Poor storytelling? How was it poor? You do nothing to explain how it isn't poor. It's pretty easy to follow when you pay attention. The absurd climax you speak of makes sense for an alien invasion of godlike beings. Hell, isn't that the climax of other superhero movies too? Gonna complain about that? Superman's lack of- WOAH, WOAH, WOAH. First off, the ship did most of the damage, second off, during his fight with Zod, ZOD was throwing him through buildings and shit. The collateral damage swept under the rug.... just like in the following movies, The Incredible Hulk, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron. Nobody gave any shits about the damage in those movies. Your argument is flawed.

I put Man of Steel in my top 3 of comic book films, and that is as someone who walked out initially liking it but not loving it. it is indeed better with each viewing. Like Mark said, it's also gained something with the creation of BvS as you get to look at it in a fresh angle. I watched it a few days ago and as I'm watching the first flight scene and him crashing through a mountain, all I could think was "How the hell does Batman stand up to that?" which only gets me more excited for BvS and the universe as a whole.

Then you get morons that say Snyder hates Superman. Um... No! Maybe you do, maybe you haven't even read a Superman comic book in the last 40 years. This film shows an emotional Superman, a human Superman, even when he is an alien from another planet. There is so much in this film, that references to Superman's history. Maybe he could be a little more sure of himself and quippy but I like this invincible hero that is vulnerable with his emotions. Which is such a beautiful way of showing this character.

They're right in saying that Zod thinks he's doing the right thing. He's trying to save his world. The big conflict is that Zod is trying to save Krypton as it was, whereas Jor-El was trying to save Krypton for what it COULD be. Jor-El recognized (and Superman later realized) that Krypton and it's artificial controls had failed. It fits with the larger theme in the film of the organic being superior to the artificial (just like they pointed out with Jor-El's natural mode of transportation versus all the ships).
