Given the amount of money involved, it makes much more sense for the wife to have believed it to be the latter. After all, Chuck made the deal without her being privy to what was actually agreed to.

It 100% is on Chuck. He was the one that sealed the terms of the deal on behalf of his wife, and neither his wife or friend talked about it together; he was the middle-man between them. His friend was clearly slimy, and Chuck already suspected he'd sleep with his wife, yet beyond a pinky-promise, he made no attempt to ensure that wouldn't happen. It was his responsibility to ensure the terms were understood for both parties. He failed to do that, and then blamed his wife for it.

If you live somewhere like Los Angeles, own a home, have two cars, etc.; you can easily be swimming in debt with $70k a year. I knew a guy that got a job for $60k a year and moved to LA for it, only to find out that he could barely afford a one bedroom apartment in a decent neighborhood and maintain a used car, without his wife getting a job on top of it. Cost of living in some places is ridiculous. The fact that he has lost three other jobs in the last year should tell us that he likely does not have a salaried job.
