In 2018 I was shot in the back left side of my head and it exited my right ear. It took some of my ear but besides that the injury looked rather superficial. I (stupidly) drove myself to the hospital. I told them I had been shot in the head. From what they could tell I just had been grazed in my ear and I was given a wet cloth to hold on my ear and told to take a number. I got called to triage after some time where a nurse that hadn’t been out of school for no more then a few months starts to clean my ear up and I’m telling her the left side of my head hurts really bad. And the more she speaks to me the less I’m hearing of her out of my right ear. Eventually she gets my ear cleaned and she said she was gonna check out the left side of my head before sending in a doctor. When she parted my hair she almost fainted. She got so white in the face and she started to scream for help. It was only when 3 nurses and a doctor come rushing in that they actually found that a bullet had gone through the back of left side of my skull. Rode around the curvature of my skull and ripped out my right ear. As of now I don’t have any brain defects or speech problems( my doctors said that could happen later on in life) although I’m completely deaf in my right ear and I do get head aches more often then I ever did before.

@keeper64585 ай бұрын
Agreed
@CRDubU5 ай бұрын
Hi, 911 dispatcher here. We often ask questions first because if we explicitly state, "Help is on the way" then the caller almost _ALWAYS_ immediately hangs up. Because they didn't stay to answer questions, this often delays care and costs lives. For example, let's say someone calls in saying that, "There's someone on the ground unconscious in front of me." We say, "Okay, help's on the way, I have a few questions I need to ask-" and then they hang up because they heard help was coming and thought that the rest was not important. I now have to delay the ambulance because the caller disconnected and I couldn't ask questions to verify that the scene is safe. Questions like, "Is there any active bleeding" and "Are there any obvious injuries" and "Is there anyone nearby with a weapon" and "Do they have a medical bracelet identifying an illness (like seizure-inducing epilepsy or diabetes or previous heart failure)" and "Are they even breathing? Are you willing to do CPR? I'll walk you through it." When someone disconnects prematurely, I have to hold the ambulance back to send police officers in first to verify that the scene is safe. Too many paramedics have been murdered by being sent to scenes where we didn't know what happened and they walked into a shooting/stabbing. Our policies and procedures are written in the blood of our dead and lifelong-disabled coworkers. Additionally, if someone disconnects prematurely, I can't give instructions for how to perform CPR to restart the heart or lungs, nor can I explain how to stop active bleeding or keep a patient conscious. However, all of this information over the last three paragraphs is too much to explain to an adrenaline-pumped and panicked caller in the heat of the moment, so instead we simply send help on the way with calmly typing to the ambulance to give information while continuing the All Caller Interrogation to gather as much info for the first responders as possible and give medical instructions - since the ambulance could be upwards of 15 minutes away from them and we want the patient to be alive when the EMS actually arrive.

My grandfather went to the ER because he was having a heart attack, with a history of heart attacks he'd survived thus far. Sat there for quite some time before finally keeling over, busting his face on the waiting room floor and promptly dying right there with no help. Then people in the US want to insist there's nothing wrong with our system... Don't get me started on my grandmother's time in the ICU before she passed. It was disgusting the way they treated her, refused to do anything, hardly any tests and not even 48 hours passed before they were pressuring us heavily to pull the plug so she could die and they'd be done with it. WOW! This TOTALLY reminds me of an EXTREMELY similar case from 2006. Look up Ryan Waller. In 2006, 18-year-old Ryan Waller was shot in the head during a home invasion in Phoenix. His girlfriend Heather Quan was killed, but police treated him as a suspect. His wounds looked like he had a black eye from a beating. In fact, he was actually shot THROUGH THE CORNER of his eye (near his nose) and it exited out the back of his head. He could still speak, had full vision but was just in agony and (had a very bad headache). Detectives refused to believe him. Despite a severe bullet wound, Ryan was interrogated for hours and denied medical treatment.

I don't think it was the fact he was still alive- cops have generally seen things like that before or at least aware that it happens. It was like the wound because it was such a small caliber that by the time they got there, swelling would have made it not really immediately identifiable as a bullet wound. The facial tissue would swell pretty quickly, definitely before he made it to dude's house, and you may not be able to see an entry wound at all by then. Just a lot of blood and swelling, so they may have thought he'd maybe seen dude with a gun but then got whacked with something really hard a few times in the face and head.

Police really need to do a better job of listening to someone's medical complaints. They are not doctors, and they cannot assess someone's health. Even if you're absolutely certain they are faking, contact medical personnel who can medically clear them, both to cover your ass, and to make sure that, on the off chance you're wrong, you don't kill someone with negligence. There's really no reason not to contact medical personnel if someone in your custody is complaining of something, especially a gunshot wound to the head. Them going to jail 15 minutes later won't change much, but if they die in the back of your car on the way there, that's a really bad look, and now someone's dead over something that absolutely wasn't worth their life.

Reminds me of the Ryan Waller case. He was shot in the head and his girlfriend was murdered during a home invasion. He eventually regained consciousness, but I can't remember exact details of how long he was awake for before police came. Police immediately brought him downtown for interrogation because they thought he was the prime suspect. He kept complaining that his head really hurt, but he was denied medical attention despite having major injuries to his face. Police thought he was lying about being shot in the face. It took them SIX hours for someone to say, "Shit, is that an exit wound on the back of your head?" Poor guy passed away like a decade later from a seizure. At least this guy got medical attention!

They left him in the back of a police car for 6 hours while they “investigated” and then took him to the police department where they interrogated him and the victim told them everything. The arrogant sob cop then finally noticed the hole in his nose and called the fire department in and joked about it. Even after realizing the severity, he yelled at Ryan because he put his feet on the desk. I’ll never forget it. RIP Ryan.

How is he being charged with attempted second degree murder and not first degree? There are literally messages from him saying that he was going to "take care of the problem", if that doesn't prove that the crime was premeditated, I don't know what would.
@Lurch-Bot4 ай бұрын
Because it is far easier to prove attempted second degree murder. The fact he sent those texts doesn't prove pre-meditation ('taking care of the problem' is simply too vague and could mean a lot of things) and the victim came to him. That would cause problems for the prosecution in terms of proving pre-meditation.
@myth2005Ай бұрын
Possibly the initial charge. If more evidence (such as the text) came in, then it can be upgraded.
@159tonyАй бұрын
First degree murder is premeditated, planned and executed and you need to prove it in court, which requires admission of intent. The step down is second, which is intentional and malicious but not premeditated.. Third degree would be an action taken which is meant to perhaps harm but not kill but ends up in a fatality anyway. Like for instance having beat someone took hard and they hit their head on something and die as a result. Or reckless driving which clearly endangers lives and was undertaken with no regard for the lives of others. Proving intent on second degree is easy, all you need is to gather the evidence of the crime.. to prove first degree you'd have to gather evidence of premeditation.. which is harder to prove.

I was in a head-on collision years ago. We hit so hard our van did a 180. My driver had a compound leg fracture and the guy who hit us was killed. There were police there within seconds which confused me. Apparently they were in the area to do a drug bust but our collision interrupted their operation. I was able to crawl out of the van but was immediately met with cops yelling at me, asking me if I had even been in the van and what I was doing there. I was absolutely terrified and confused and had no idea what to do. Eventually one of them told me to just leave so I did. I'll never understand why they acted like that.

When people call 911 they have this picture in their mind that an order for help is placed at the end of the call so I’m glad the operator said “these questions aren’t slowing them down.” Because each detail in the call is messaged immediately to first responders. Each detail just helps for when they arrive so they can know what they’re dealing with.
