It's a different genre altogether, but it's an idea related to runtime I brought up to my wife years ago. She had a police procedural, no idea which one, on in the background. The bad guy had kidnapped a woman and had her hostage on a houseboat. At about thirty minutes into the 60 minute episode, he put a gun to his own head, then to hers. I shouted, "GEE, THINK HE'LL DO IT WITH HALF THE RUNTIME LEFT?" It gave me an idea- a mystery or police show on streaming that would make some effort to hide the episode length from you. You might have to screw around with the digital architecture on Netflix or something to make that work, but I feel like a mystery you don't know the runtime of would be super cool. It's like how movies can be so engrossing if they're really good and you don't look at your phone, just let time become irrelevant. I remember in college I'd watch new episodes of Marble Hornets on my Wii U, on the TV screen, and refuse to look at the time remaining. That was a cool way to get really engrossed.
@R-Lee-2 жыл бұрын
That's a good idea.
@tyedyeguy6252 жыл бұрын
You're onto something there. I really like the idea of cop show done in a shorter format. There would be so many cliffhangers to leave you guessing and the writers could work with that to do what normally wouldn't be done. We'd go from, "GEE, THINK HE'LL DO IT?", to "holy crap he did it!"
@Busterkeatonrules2 жыл бұрын
That's some good thinking. Maybe a cop show with standard half-hour episodes, but where the various investigations aren't required to start and end when the episodes do? So any time a new mystery is introduced, it might take up multiple seasons, or it might end with a seemingly random person butting in after two minutes, shouting a confession, and then committing suicide before anyone can react. Probably wouldn't fly in regular, once-a-week broadcasting, but it shouldn't be a problem on a streaming service!
@planefan0822 жыл бұрын
I've taken notice when REALLY GOOD shows specifically mess with the progression of the plot relative to runtime in order to properly surprise me. I've only noticed this was an issue after I've seen shows addressing the patterns I didn't even know I had found.

I thought this was a great vehicle for Rowan Atkinson. It's basically Mr Bean, but because he's playing a real person it's OK that he's older. While I hope there is no man vs bee 2, I hope the concept/character can live on and maybe hear about the man vs shredder that was hinted at.

The best part about streaming is that shows can tell a story in whatever time it needs. The problem with streaming is that audiences think that every episode should be as long as possible,even when the story doesn't need that long of a run time.

Finding out this was originally a John Hughes 90s comedy film explains a lot. After Home Alone, he just kept trying to replicate the formula by making all of his films live action cartoons; Flubber, 101 Dalmatians, Just Visiting, Baby’s Day Out, and Dennis The Menace. So hearing the concept of Rowan Atkinson getting rid of a bee stretched to 90mins didn’t grab me all that much.

That's exactly what they did. I read about this while they were filming it, and the report I read was that they were filming a MOVIE called 'Man vs Bee'. The decision to release it in Netflix and cut it into episodes to make it a limited series was definitely made either after filming was completed, or during filming. I think it was a good decision; a movie like this probably would have failed at the box office, and been savaged in the reviews, despite being quite a good bit of fun.

A lot of the comedy comes from the irony of modern conveniences in the smart house being the biggest obstacles for Trevor, since one of the first things to go wrong is the notebook explaining how to use them going up in flames. I’ll go for physical tap handle over motion sensors anytime. It’s an application of Murphy’s Law Mr Bean subsection, if anything can go wrong it will definitely go wrong when it is most comedically appropriate. Nina’s list of Don’ts is a Chekhov’s Gun tick list as the episodes go on.
