Jimmy for the win. I do use expensive mana cost ramp to try to ramp early to my Eldrazi.

Super late and you probably already know by now but re. 10:15 the clean-up step is after the end step. It's the point when you discard down to 7 cards, damage is removed etc.

Howsit! Would you guys be willing to consider a semi budget dual/fetch land episode? Btw thank you for all the fun and informative content. You rock!!!

Hey, guys! Thanks for the content. New here and watching these for now. Considering the point of "ramp for 4 mana and more besides Gilded Lotus isn't good enough (usually)", what's ur stand on Zendikar Resurgence and Mana Reflection as big kinds of ramp? I don't have the later one, but when i get the first one out then, oh boy, do i feel that game goes my way? I sure do!

Also, did ur principles behind "10 ramp, 10 draw, 37 lands" changed in any way?

So I'm kinda new to magic, and I was wondering about the mana curve in a commander deck. I know in standard/modern/legacy the curve is really important, so that you are doing something each turn that is impactful to the board. But it seems like with 40 life and multiple players, you can get away with not playing something on each of your land drops, for example I made a Niv-Mizzet deck with 8, 1 and 2 drops, then 25 3 drops. Should I cut more useful cards so that I play something each turn? Or does the format warrant playing a curve like this?
@Kestral2878 жыл бұрын
+james hansen While it's a bit late to respond to this, that was sort-of addressed in the part one of this. It really is far less important to make a play on your first turn, because when you have three to five players involved, the one drop doesn't tend to make a huge impact. For an example, I recall a three-player game not long ago where an Anafenza player got off the turn-one Warden. Pretty much an ideal play in standard, but in EDH, it was pretty meh. He put dents in the life totals of the other two of us, but even when he had the Warden fully powered with a few backup creatures, it hit the point that we stabilized and shut him down-- even the Oloro player was able to just put a big enough blocker on the board, and the more threatening creatures died. If you're playing French (1v1) Commander that does tilt things back towards speed, because aggro decks only have to fight through 40 life rather than 80-160, but even then the extra 20 life buffer can go a long way if you're strong in the midgame. My favorite EDH deck is Animar, and while Animar is a lot of ramping shenanigans he doesn't come online until turn three under normal conditions. So I actually only have a single one-drop in the deck, and even the short-list of cards to add only has one more. Instead, on turn one I usually just try to play a tapland. I'm not being 'set back' a turn by using my land to scry turn one, because that's pretty much all anybody is doing. The same for turn two; I have a few more two-drops, primarily mana enablers to help prevent being screwed out of T3 Animar, but if I have to I can again drop a tapland. That way, turn three, when I really want to cast my general, I should have a basic or other untapped land to ensure the play. After that my curve is loaded with three- four- and higher drops, so I can try to ensure that come turn four my engine is online and I can drop 1-2 creatures into play. Animar warps things past that, but I find most decks that I've seen play fairly similarly in the early game.

Ironically Teferi would be worse as a commander if the untap 4 was a 0 ability

Anybody here sometimes think the Talismans are a bit better than Signets?
@phycho406 жыл бұрын
I've heard both sides, not sure yet which is better for my 5 color deck. Think it comes down to the dmg from the talismans vs them being able to immediately tap for mana

I Kinda Feel At Loss Here, Bause I feel Elves are special on this subject...And I kinda struggle with my Manacurve (But I am Also Relatively New To MTG) Love your shows
@commandcast9 жыл бұрын
+Kenneth I. Hansen Oh I would say Elves are very specific on the subject of mana bases because so many of them produce mana in some form or another but also synergize with your deck in other ways. This two part series was more of a general coverage of the subject and can't be applied directly to each and every archetype.

I would argue that Cabal Coffers is fixing, not just ramp. It's a land that adds one color, yes, but the ramp it produces costs generic mana, so not only are you ramping into potentially huge amounts of mana but you can do it with no other black sources. I can see the argument against this, I just think that explanation makes more sense to me.
@about50pyros558 жыл бұрын
+Jake Robinson it's like if you can meaninfully use its effect. You already have enough black sources to cast cards from your deck. the additional black is really just colorless

What kind of idiot wouldnt 2 for 1 your land with an enchantment on it?
@Stormraven969 жыл бұрын
Kei Loerop The kind of idiot that isn't 100% reactive and saves their limited land destruction for bigger threats. Given the opportunity to take out a Cabal Coffers or Gaea's Cradle or Nykthos instead, would you go for that or Market Festival?
@anonymous-dk3um9 жыл бұрын
Stormraven96 aside from coffers you need permanents to get them online and mana to do that, and its not like you can never re-etb that acidic slime or stripmine...
@Stormraven969 жыл бұрын
Kei Loerop *shrug* If I see Fatestitcher or some other way to exploit the enchantment, I'd probably have to move on it. But by itself, I'd rather just save the little land d. my deck might have for a bigger threat instead of just being able to say I two-for-one'd when the rest of the table still has cards on both of us because of that trade. To each their own, I guess.
@colaocha11156 жыл бұрын
you need to be 3-for-oneing at least in commander to be in card advantage if there are 4 players
