I remember Dan Olsen casually calling out Honey as a "data harvesting scam" during his video on Nostalgia Critic's review of The Wall. I never looked deeper into it myself (coupon hacks mean nothing when you don't like online shopping) but hearing the guy who'd go on to demystify bigger financial scams like NFTs and the Metaverse say it was sketchy always stuck in my brain when those sponsorships popped up

I think the real issue is that actual companies don't want to deal with KZbinrs for legal and financial reasons and thus only bad actors do the sponsorships. Otherwise, companies like Walmart would be sponsoring videos that show how to make neat things from stuff bought only in their stores.

"How are the users of Honey getting scammed?" the answer is that they are not, Someone who would otherwise never look for discount codes is always better off with honey because at least there's the chance of getting somehing cheaper ( even if it isn't the best discount you could find manually ). KZbinrs are mad that they are losing out and trying to make us care about it. Like a game dev expecting us to feel bad that Steam takes a cut of their sales.

The fact that Linus tech tips realised that Honey was a scam and ended their contract with them… but instead of ringing the alarm and letting people know about the scam they kept the info private and signed with one of honeys rivals that has the same business model and pulls the same scam, is definitely one of the KZbinr moments of all time

On a serious note, the sad thing about the Honey scam is that A) it doesn't only scam the creators who promoted it, but ANY affiliate link when the users clicks on "search for coupons". And B) the owner company of Honey is PayPal, so the money scammed away from content creators (some of them dependent on the proceeds of affiliate links) goes to a multi billion dollar company.

What’s funny is there’s a guy on here that’s literally sponsored by Lockheed Martin. He’s active military (Air Force), and his channel is basically showing off military vehicles (which I find to be super cool), but all his sponsors are like Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, all the branches of the US military.
