11:30 Spinarak could only be encountered at night in Gold & Silver, so they made it darker colored to give the impression you were fighting at night. That's the story I believe anyway. EDIT: I meant only Gold & Silver, not Crystal. You can encounter Spinarak during the day in Crystal by headbutting trees, so that would be a reason to make a "day" coloration.

I feel that’s the case with all Gen 2 Pokémon sprites. They all seem to be tinted either yellowish/lighter or purplish/darker. Having no background in battle kinda leaves that context out.

I always assumed Spinarak in G/S was because of the internal clock. Spinarak could only be caught at night, so it made sense that it was always shaded as though it is dark outside.

Something to note about Gengar is that in its anime appearances, Gengar was portrayed very differently with an extremely dark purple, almost black. It was portrayed this way up until Journeys with Ash's Gengar, who has the more modern bright purple. I personally preferred the very dark color, It makes Gengar look more like a shadow and less like a...blob.

I suspect a lot of the changes from G/S to Crystal were because the anime took liberties in adjusting the colors to look better (which they had been doing from the beginning since the early game colors were always limited by the tech) but some of those creative changes were to colors that they actually could do on the Gameboy Color, so they adjusted the palletes in Crystal to match the anime, ultimately becoming the canonical color.

I always thought Spinarak's darker colors were a reference to finding it at night. It's dark, so this is just what your character is seeing. Considering gen 2's attention to detail, like finding sleeping pokemon in trees at night, or the slight music change, this could very well be the case.

I have played the Pokemon games in order and when I saw Sneasel's coloration in Silver, I actually thought that that color combination made way more sense based on its types. For Spinarak, it feels to me as though the strange Purple sprite was somewhat meant to show the day/night cycle new to gen 2, since Spinarak is only encountered at night when Ledyba is encountered in the day. I think the Spinarak thing is easy to explain, at least in my eyes. Gen 2 specifically gold and silver where the first games to introduce day/night mechanics. Spinarak being only available at night makes me assume they tried to make it look like it had night time shading, while also knowing clear well that it's color was always green. So my guess is they wanted to emphasize the day/night feature early on to give us an idea of what is happening. Just a though. Could totally be wrong. But hey technology was limited back the. Maybe they just didn't have access to that green yet

Just a quick little correction... Snorlax was one of the few Pokemon (along with Wartortle and Poliwhirl, and a few more) whose Emerald sprite was different from its Ruby/Sapphire Sprite. In Emerald, Snorlax is in the same "trying to get up pose," but it's no longer smiling. Some people joke that across generations, Snorlax's sprites are flipbooks of him just trying to get up and finally succeeding in Gen VI onward.

Here is my made up reason for spinarak's color change: When it got to Johto it's purple color was very revealing and made it a prime target to predators. So over generations it gradually evolved into green color to hide better in the grass. Just like with all bugs (and arachnids) generations happen quickly so the change happened within gen 2. Fun Fact: Not just Croconaw got the color change, the _entire_ Feraligatr line changed their color. From being a turquoise or cyan color it became royal blue. Stayed the same in Gen 3, then changed to light blue in Gen 4 and has been this way to this day.

one argument you could possibly make for spinaraks (spelled wrong in sure) is that being the first game to introduce day/ night cycles, they could have been experimenting with the fact that its color is how it would look at night since it was primarily found after dark in those games. Basically green but in dark shadow because its dark out :)

Maybe it's just me, but I was always a bit perplexed by the colors for Deoxys. Any of the official artwork I had seen showed it had red/orange and blue for its arm tentacles, but the in game sprites look far more green than blue to me. I can't say how many of these color differences between games have screwed me over. I remember knowing Noctowl's shiny was a gold color as a kid and being used to seeing a lot of the darker-hued Noctowl in Heartgold. But I always had a minor shock when I played Black and saw it shifted to a more golden color. I thought for a moment I was getting a shiny every time, even though it wasn't. I clearly have not learned, since I went back to Platinum now that I'm older and was convinced at first glance I had a shiny Gligar. It did not help that my first full odds shiny encounter was Sawk, a shiny with the tiniest change in hue. I guess having an artist's eye for color in pokemon in both a blessing and a curse.

I think a fun way of explaining this in-game is that that's how each of these Pokemon look in their respective regions. Environmental factors, less harsh than the Regional Variants, lead to the slight variations in color between games.

Fun Fact: In Gens 4 and 5, Croagunk's cheek pouches and second finger were the same tomato red color as Toxicroak's throat, but they were changed to orange in Gen 6 because of the anime portraying them as orange on BROCK'S Croagunk (probably for nostalgia's sake or something). It's possible that some of these color changes were ALSO done in conjunction with the anime accidentally getting them wrong somehow, though I kinda doubt it was a lot of them

I used to think that spinarak's GS colours were like that because it's a spooky pokémon and one of the first night pokémon in the game, so it's like what it looks like in the dark of night without much light around
