You can somehow hear the movement towards the 80's on this. It has the element of 70's prog but also the then modern sound coming in.

Manfred Mann was already great in the 60s with some success in the charts but after founding the Earth Band he said that finally he could leave the stage with his head held high. It was a huge jump in the quality of his music. He is very underrated as a keyboarder and though not everybody would mention him beside Emerson, Wakeman or Banks I am sure he is close to them in terms of playing the right thing (notes and sounds) at the right time. Being one of the first keyboarders to use the Minimoog he was hired by Uriah Heep for playing the solo at the end of their wonderful July Morning. Beside great original stuff he is one of the masters of covers. Especially some Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen songs got a quality you could not assume before he worked them out. Though I like all of his albums I think he reached the pinnacle with "The Roaring Silence" - one of the few no-filler-albums and in my opinion a candidate for a long saturday reaction. There was never a real star in his band but every single musician over the decades far more than just solid. This specific song is not one of my favorite Manfred Mann songs but not because I don't like it but because I think that there is a lot of stuff that I like even more. Just to name a few : Father of Day Father of Night, Davy's on the road again, Martha's Madman.

Oh man, there's a clip of this song being performed on the German 'RockPop' TV music show, with the band being surrounded by a very stiff audience - except for 1 single woman who's dancing along to the song, and she really gets into it, too! 😄 It wouldn't surprise me if her name was Carol! 😀 Other great MMEB songs: 'Lies (Through The Eighties)', and their cover of Ben E King's 60's song 'I Who Have Nothing' 😀👍

...MMEB were a band to check out all of their 70s albums - so interesting, innovative, often on the edge of Progrock, and FUN! At that time (1979) they were already more pop-rock oriented, but I did love it too! Their strongest phase was IMHO between 1973 and 1975... 'Messin', 'Solar Fire' and 'Nightingales and Bombers'... they were very popular in my home country Germany, and would still tour for decades after their most successful albums, to play to very devoted audiences... you just knew if you go to their concerts it would be a party!! 😎

Hey JP, I know you like drumming so I'd like to suggest a "deep" cut from Carlos Santana. It was cut during his solo era and the song is Jharna Kala from the album Swing of Delight. The drummer is Graham Lear, he was the original drummer for Gino Vannelli before he was recruited to play for Santana, he drummed for him for 12 years! Graham plays in the pocket incredibly on this song with a few surprises. I'm sure you'll dig it. I hope I sold this one well.

Every sound I liked that mades me imagine were together. Talk box, greatest keyboard solo from long in a kind of a psychedelic pop song Manfred Mann of course, raw thick MiniMoog solo (I suspect he used an Oberheim SEM expander for the Album to morph the tone even bigger) it could be seen live a bit later, it was something then and now. Unfortunately they were several Single shortened versions were the MiniMoog were cut out, particularly in the video. Enjoy!

Its a symbolism of a story of a delicate yet resilent wild rose. The rose symbolizes a fragile idea or dream. The song emhasizes the importance of nurturing and protecting the idea or dream which is fragile and a "cruel lie" has the potential to ruin it. So there you have it😅

Hi JP. DP from UK. Another excellent reaction - You're The Voice! As you say, a really strong opener, and it really comes to life with the Chris Thompson sung chorus. One of the great rock vocalists, imho. Unlike you, I'm not a fan of the Talkbox, used here in the verse and the instrumental break. And it's definitely Manfred playing the synth solo - he's always interesting and exciting, especially live. I last saw them in 1977 on the Roaring Silence tour. P.S. my song ref You're The Voice is sung by John Farnham, but co-written by Chris Thompson.

Don't know for a fact but the 'sounds like a synth' is probably a MiniMoog. Very distinctive sound. This is a bit poppy for my taste but the better kind of pop. I too prefer Manfred Mann's Chapter 3 which is far more proggy/jazzy.
