I would highly recommend you keep your hand bandaged up, and put some honey on it. Change the bandage out every morning and evening, and apply fresh honey every time. I learned from a surgeon that honey has great antiseptic and wound healing properties, far superior to iodine solutions. You also might want to talk to your doctor about some broad spectrum antibiotics. Apologies if I'm telling you stuff you already know, but I thought I'd mention it just in case. Good luck. I hope you recover quickly and completely.

To wash it use hibiclenz. It kills almost all germs and doesn't hurt and doesn't do tissue damage. Make sure you are straightening those 2 fingers as much as tolerated and the other fingers so you don't get contractures. If you get a fever or red streaking up your arm, you have to get medical attention.

It's good that your fingers are still attached at the very least. I also respect how you're not afraid to admit fault in a situation like this, whilst still not sugercoating the bite and just the overall risks that come with owning huge lizards. I find people who deliberately underplay just how powerful these animals are, unintentionally do a disservice to the hobby by giving inexperienced people the confidence to go out and buy potentially dangerous reptiles without the necessary research. Not everything has to be "puppy-dog tame" this or "puppy-dog tame" that.

Hi. Interesting breakdown here with a few comments I can add but one being critical. With any varanus bite you must knock back the bacterial aspect first regardless of the mechanical damage. Right off, a dilute bleach and water solution(just enough bleach to make the water “slippery”) to immerse the hand in for 15 minutes. It will bleed but this step is critical. Historically, I have suffered bites that I did not know enough to do this with and paid the price. You must kill this bacteria in the wound from the monitor or you will suffer further. The bacteria can really cause further pain and suffering. If you do this you can save yourself a great amount of grief. I rarely get bit and train my employees to do this trick right off regardless of the size of the bite. It’s the bacteria I fear, the bite is secondary. I have never been to a doctor over a bite and hope to say this going forward. I’ve stitched myself and often you can recover without such a procedure. Your overview is realistic, you made sone good points and clearly this is a learning event. You’ve added some complications by not soaking your hand and your discomfort is partially due to the lizards bacteria(venom, but I would call it a bacteria that causes the damage and pain). I’d always suggest for people to not target feed monitors and disassociate handling events from feeding events. I could keep going but I don’t want to bore people. Good luck healing! Kev
@Dakotahblueexotics
@Dakotahblueexotics Жыл бұрын
I remember hearing years back on one of your videos that you do that method for all your employees when they get bit. I didn't have the nerve unfortunately 😅. My method was chlorhexidine to clean the wound, double antibacterial using lidocaine for the pain and bacitracin, then put myself on antibiotics just in case. You're target training comment, are you saying you do encourage or do not? I'm not sure if that "not" was a mistake and would love to hear more insight on it. Definitely not a bore! Any information on varanades coming from a man with your experience is nothing short of valuable.

Hi. I discourage target training if it is an animal that you want to interact with while not having to worry every movement can trigger a sudden feed response. I interacted with a big Komodo dragon and kept noticing sudden changes to his behavior due to various stimuli. I asked, do you target train ??? I knew the answer and they confirmed. Association of yourself and feeding can add problems and confuse your Dino. Kev

This Argus appears to go into a full mental food response right ? I likely need to see him in action on video. If this is his food response then we need to get his brain back online. If this is a “this is my space and I kill everything” type thing we need to break his cycle. I’d remove him from this space and put into a smaller more confining cage to get back to basics with him. The bite might have also freaked him out and now he gets very defensive. I think I need to understand more to compile best bourse forward. K

When I had my hysterectomy, most of the area around the incision was numb. Over time, I would get these sharp pin prick feelings deep inside, and occasionally the maddening itch that I could never scratch. My doctor told me that it was the signal that gets sent when two severed nerves meet up and "shake hands with each other." So yeah, nerve pain means healing. Get better soon! (PS, get a buddy to help you around the enclosure maintenance. I know you can't pay him, but maybe you can barter for something.)

When I got nailed on my thumb I lost feeling and cut a vein and it was shooting blood and have some awesome scars to show for it. Every time I’ve been bitten was TOTALLY my careless fault as well. But sometimes we need something like that to happen to knock sense back into us. Bites are pretty much inevitable especially for folks like us that’s been doing it for decades because we tend to get relaxed or too cocky like you said. When my then 6’ boa bit me twice last year it was after ignoring very clear warnings from her. My hand hurt like hell & was paralyzed for a few days because she bit into some nerves. Believe it or not but at the time my feelings hurt more because I’ve raised her from a snakelet. So sorry that you have to work on regaining his trust after putting in so much work already but I’m confident that you will.

What a great reply 😊. Don’t beat yourselves up too much. It’s human nature to let our guard down like that. Things go fine for such a long time that we think we will be ok if we just do this or that out of ease or convenience and BOOM. We suddenly realize that we have found that line in the sand. If we didn’t know where it was before, we sure know where it is now. Happens everyday with people. Especially on the interstate here.

Hey man, i feel the pain as i watch you describe it! I work with Mangrove monitors and have been bit many times, (I’d gladly share pics and details if it helps), sameas you think, all varanus have anticoagulant properties in their venom, and if i may share some advice from my experience, no matter how well you clean it, the bite will get infected to a certain degree, and it’s vital that you treat it according to what your argus eats, its diet will largely determine the type of bacteria it carries… long story short, for the worst bite i got, i went to a clinic for starters, was put on wide spectrum antibiotics, didn’t work, started swelling worse with signs of cellulitis, then went to a big hospital, where a specialist analyzed the food that my Mangroves eat, then prescribed a specific antibiotic against bacteria found in seafood, i kid you not my balloon of a hand looked nearly normal within 24 hrs… HOWEVER, within the time my hand was infected, the bacteria had traveled through and started eating on the joints and cartilage of my left hand, it was really tendinitis but presented just as arthritis in the fingers… which has since taken lots of time and rehab to get back to normal…

My experience has been “when you get bit” is always “when I least expect it” and/or “when I get too casual”. That said, thanks for sharing and hope things heal up for you. I tore a finger tendon a couple years back, but I make my living working a keyboard all day and fortunately I have good medical coverage, so I got it repaired. Man I feel you on the no insurance medical bill situation... It's a fucked up reality most of us face in the US who aren't lucky enough to have a job with benefits or are under 26 and on their parents insurance through work. I'm a dog groomer and the vast majority of private companies do not/can't afford to provide medical insurance for employees. If I were to suffer a severe dog bite or other injury I wouldn't be able to afford it. About a year ago I had to go to the ER for acute pancreatitis (most excruciating pain I've ever been in, comparable to appendicitis) and got billed 2 thousand dollars. I still haven't paid it off so it got sent to collections and I know it's destroying my credit. All I can say is I understand you not wanting to go to the hospital over this. An ER visit is not a luxury most of us can afford, especially without insurance. I'm really glad your bite wasn't worse. You legitimately could have lost a finger or two or even your hand from infection. It could have spread to the bone. I'd say all in all you're pretty lucky. Can I ask what you used to fix it up? I'm guessing super glue. Anyways, I subbed and look forward to watching the rest of your videos. I wish you a steady and full recovery 🙏❤️

And I know surgery's and treatment can be extremely expensive especially if you don't have insurance.. But the thing you absolutely have to be careful of is a staff infection. A bottle of alco gel, 3 tubes of superglue and a finger splint, I went back to work. It took almost 2 years to get total feeling back in tip of finger. Still got the scars from that. 15 years ago I got bit by a 5 foot croc monitor. He was never aggressive, but got tired of my cleaning his cage. Came around the dustpan i was using to hold him back, and bit my palm over the thumb. Like you i grabbed him by the neck. He held on maybe half a minute then let go. I pushed him back in the cage and closed it up. This was nothing more than a "i'm tired of you get away from me" bite. Still. My bad. If i had had a glove on nothing more would have come of it. However, no glove. By the time i reached the hospital on my own, the bath towel wrapped around my hand was soaked. Walked in dripping on the floor, explained what happened, got put on a gurney, and woke up in what looked like a storage closet. ?????? No good explanation for this. Apparently i passed out and went into convulsions from blood loss. Never did hurt, during or after. After a bit a Dr came in, a regulation hand surgeon, and sewed me up right there in what still looked to me like a storage closet. ??????? Rather than use individual stitches, he did like a ladder back and forth with one long thread on the back of the hand. Still have two long scars halfway across. The palm below the thumb was more torn up where the lower jaw did more damage, but got stitched up okay. Antibiotics did ok, except i was allergic to the antibiotic , got a rash, and got a 7-day steroid pill treatment. Never got infected( however i have always had a terrific immune system), and never did hurt unless i pulled on the stitches. Still and will always have scars. But no loss of use, there is a numb section in the web between thumb and index finger, and the index finger gets cold in the cold winter air. I have always been a glove guy. Been bitten probably a thousand times by snakes over the last 45 years. Pain sucks, blood sucks, god made gloves for a reason. I use them. I use them even more since. I have 5 monitors and 100 snakes, up to 12 foot retics. For any snake over 3 feet i wear gloves. For ALL feeding i wear gloves. Grow the hell up, man. Put the damn gloves on. A month ago a 9 foot retic missed the rabbit and grabbed and wrapped my hand. Oops. Glove slid off and went into the cage with the snake.

This medical insurance thing in the USA breaks my heart. You cannot mess with a deep bite especially from a meat eating monitor. You must absolutely check for developing infection. Many normal antibiotics will not help with deep infections. Probably need something like Pristinamycine. Do not wait to get treated if it doesn’t clear up.

Add a flower pot dolly to the one or 2 gallon sprayer and pull it along. It is what I use. I tied the strap to the flower dolly so it does not tip as I use it.

Things can always be worse. Remember Chandler’s little encounter a few months ago? Granted there’s a big size difference but you still need to guard against things like sepsis. Just keep the wound area clean (cant stress this enough) and it’ll heal.

After a week you could try one of those stress balls and start by just holding it. Then when that doesn’t hurt much start squeezing the stress ball. The worst thing you can do is not moving it. Your tendons and muscles will freeze. And if your close to a Canadian border come up here.

I had a granade blast rip the skin off of three of my fingers in Afghanistan, it took ages for the skin to grow back. In 3 years or so you will most likely regain feel somewhat and full motion. The nerves re-rout with physioteraphy. That shooting pain when you stretch your arms or fingers takes 2 1/2 months to go away but it does.

I'm with you though the American medical system is a joke, we have the best doctors and advanced medicine but the crooks that control it make it impossible for the actual working class to access. Hope you heal soon!

As someone who has lost fingers on both hands, and someone who has got bite but a rattler, you need to try and move your fingers , or else it will just get more difficult and painful to move your hand when the swelling goes down.

Man, that is rough and I'm sorry to hear you're going through this. On the nerve damage front... about 30 years ago when I was a young man with an unhealthy knife fascination, I basically circumcised the tip of my left index finger. Thankfully there was enough left connected that the flesh didn't sluff off. It took about a year to regain feeling in my fingertip and it was messed up as hell. It never actually felt like the tip was touching anything, it was other parts of the finger that would either feel a pressure or a searing pain when the tip was touched. It took about 2-3 years before what I'm guessing is my brain was able to re-wire itself and connect the location with the sensations to a point where I could actually tell my fingertip was touching something. No medical intervention is going to make that any better, it's just a waste of money. The only thing a medical professional can offer is antibiotics. If the wound has scabbed finally there's no need for stitches. My parents were the type that wouldn't take their kids to the doctor unless we were on the verge of death. When I was 16 I was playing with a machete and missed a swing that hit just below my knee and took a piece of bone out with it. I wish I'd had stitches for that one. Damn thing would bust open almost daily when I moved and it took about 3 months for the scab to finally get a good hold and stop popping open. Antibiotics and keeping it clean are all the docs can offer aside from stitches. I got an Argentine B&W male tegu this summer. He's about a year old and around 3 feet currently and I worry about this a lot. He's very shy and tries to run off and hide any time I interact with him. It's a slow process. Twice now though he's been hungrier than I anticipated and launched himself through the air at my hand when I opened his enclosure. He's tagged me twice but they were glancing blows and he's still little. It does make me worry though if he hits full size and we're still not on touchy-feely terms. I have noticed since those two times that he has "modes" and I watch for those indicators. When he's in "food mode" there is nothing to be done to get him to snap out of flying, jump, and eat mode until he's gotten a few Reptilinks in him. Then he calms down and enters "normal mode". At that point he's gentle as a puppy taking food from my hand to the point he rather drop the link than risk getting too close to my fingers. But in food mode, forget about it. His brain isn't there, just his instinct. It's like when they enter explore mode. You can be walking right behind him and he's oblivious because he's exploring. The minute he switches modes and realizes I've been right behind him, it's fight or flight mode and he flees at warp speed. I'm coming to the conclusion that no matter how much trust we build up with them, if they're brain enters the wrong mode, we're dealing with a wild animal all over again. I hope you both recover both physically for you and emotionally for both of you. Many kudos to your dedication. So many people instantly write off an animal after it has had a natural reaction and never analyze the situation and the part they played in it. You're an amazing keeper. Wishing you all the best man!

Hands are just full of bones and what not. I broke a pinky and it still hurts when it gets cold. Some crazy lady on a volunteer job smashed it with a table. Though I smashed my fingers into the ground and that hurt for months. Fortunately I can use both hands equally. So I did my school tests with my left hand. What sucks is there is little that can be done for pain. Pills can help a little with swelling but as for venoms or infections heck no fun dude. Hope none of the bones are infected.

Glad your fingers are still in tact and hopefully you're on the mend. They certainly don't take prisoners. Mine only seem tame before they are fully warmed up in the morning. Once warm I'm always on my guard. I've had stitches due to being a bit complacent, but luckily nothing as bad as yours. Just subcribed👍🏻.

Good luck bro that really sucks . I was bit by a 4 ft monitor on the arm when I was kid working at a pet shop i worked at. luckily the bite wasn't too bad, it was just a bit of a nip but it did get infected. It sucked and took a long time to heal. But I was being stupid and i was really green and not used to working with them also the animals weren't really fed or treated very well there so I don't blame him. Anyways good luck with the wound and nerve damage bro. I really hope it all works out.

What you're describing is exactly how it felt when I accidentally stabbed myself in the hand and cut a nerve. You'll be able to use the finger again just fine, it's stuff because of internal swelling, the feeling will never fully return though. Half of my index finger completely lost feeling after the injury, felt like it had been numbed where I could just feel pressure. Now that it's been more than 10 years feeling has mostly returned around the tip of my finger and the base but most of the middle I only have maybe 40%feeling if that. Also that part of my finger is super sensitive to cold and can't feel heat at all. I had nerve surgery, mostly because one of the nerve endings swelled up into a neuroma and as a result I was getting all sorts of weird phantom sensations in my finger. So they removed the swollen ending and did what they could to try and reattach the nerve. Wish you the best with your hand.
