When I did doctoral research in Guaymas, Sonora, the always insatiable tourism sector and the cultured shrimp export sector had carte blanche to rip out the "manglares" to build marinas, hotels, and also "granjas acuicolas". My colleagues at the ITESM-Guaymas were using air photos and remote sensing to plot GIS maps of the coastal mangroves in the region. Sad job to record environmental destruction.

There’s an issue back where I’m from in Micronesia because they cut all the mangroves out of this part of an island and the proposed land sq feet changed drastically because of coastal erosion. The proposed resort doesn’t fit anymore because the shoreline was kicked back so far.
