Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Beauty finds refuge in herself
Lovers wrapped inside each others lies
Beauty is such a terrible thing
She is suffering yet more than death
[Chorus]
She is suffering
She sucks you deeper in
She is suffering
You exist within her shadow
[Verse 2]
Beauty she is scarred into man's soul
A flower attracting lust, vice, and sin
A vine that can strangle life from a tree
Carrion surrounding, picking on leaves
[Chorus]
She is suffering
She sucks you deeper in
She is suffering
You exist within her shadow
[Guitar Solo]
[Verse 3]
Beauty, she poisons unfaithful all
Stifled, her touch is leprous and pale
The less she gives, the more you need her
No thoughts to forget when we were children
[Chorus]
She is suffering
She sucks you deeper in
She is suffering
Nature's lukewarm pleasure

Richey was rather partial to groupies, but maybe that was all part of the disaffection before his disappearance.. who knows. Whatever the case, The Holy Bible is one of the most enduring albums of all time.

Honestly, I don't think it's a matter of not understanding the album. A lot of people just aren't going to jive with its tone. And that's okay. Say what you will about _The Holy Bible,_ how powerful and moving it is in so many ways, but even its staunchest fans would never even dream of describing this album as anything remotely approximating "easy listening". It's not a happy, cheerful record. For many people, they listen to music to wind down and put themselves in a more positive frame of mind. Even other dark acts that achieve huge mainstream success-bands like Pink Floyd, Nine Inch Nails, or Korn are good examples-became popular because listeners can relate to what Roger Waters, Trent Reznor, or Jonathan Davis are talking about. The anger, the insecurity, and the feeling of being alienated from the world around you are things that we all go through sometimes. It's cathartic to listen to _The Downward Spiral_ or _The Wall_ when you're feeling depressed because it's reassurance that somebody really understands you and what you're going through. What sets _The Holy Bible_ apart is that it isn't exclusively focused on personal pain. It's not specifically about depression, though it was written by an unambiguously depressed person. Rather, this is an album that forces you to empathize with the suffering of others, and to contemplate some of the darker aspects of our existence from a different, less comfortable perspective. There is very little catharsis to be found anywhere on this record. It can make you feel sad, cynical, deflated, and oppressed. And for many people, that's not what they want to hear in the music that they listen to. It's not that they don't understand, or that they don't care-it's that the overwhelming darkness of _The Holy Bible_ is not to their taste.

@Shape of Silence What's C93? Never heard that term before. For the record, I'm Canadian and I love the Manic Street Preachers. There's so much power and sincerity in their lyrics and music. Richey Edwards was a true empath, and a visionary.
@KurtisC93
@KurtisC93 3 жыл бұрын
@Shape of Silence Copying and pasting a comment I left on another video (featuring this same song): This song is one of many reasons why I love the Manic Street Preachers-and particularly this album-so much. They pull no punches, and they don't put up a false front. They speak the cold, hard truth about the ugliest side of humanity. _The Holy Bible_ is essential listening not because it's pleasant-it's not, and it doesn't pretend to be (not that it could, even if it wanted to)-but because it's real. It's raw. It speaks the truth. There are moments in this album that are genuinely heartbreaking. Then there are moments that will shake you to your core. But beneath it all, you can hear the musings of a true empath. That's who Richey Edwards was. That who the Manic Street Preachers are.

@Torthrodhel
@Torthrodhel 4 жыл бұрын
@@GreenBitterfly I like ifwhiteamerica, but there are two things very wrong with it. First is that grammatical error. Wouldn't care normally but if you're being weird and artsy with a song title in the first place that kinda invites annoyance over grammar errors. Eh, joined titles like that are annoying to begin with, just write it properly. But second thing is the process of actually listening to it. I understand what I'm listening to when the chorus first-version posits its racism as something "they say". But am I gonna play it at full volume? Do the neighbours or people walking by my window understand the context? Or do they just hear some random person rocking out to "there ain't no black in the Union Jack"? Owch. I mean that's what they hear isn't it? And I'm white myself so, um... best not.
@GreenBitterfly
@GreenBitterfly 4 жыл бұрын
@@Torthrodhel Sorry I never got a notification of your reply. Yes, the way it's written annoys me, I can never write it right, it's down as Ifwhiteamerican on my The Holy Bible album on my tablet and I refuse to change it! Yes, I'm not sure it sounds right if you don't get the context!

@@GreenBitterfly I just dislike the musical composition. With the album in particular, those instrumentals make a song a hit or a miss. I find it rather challenging to get into this album because, maybe I'm overreacting, I felt like I was listening to a pop punk song. Pop punk is one of the genres I absolutely despite for context. While I adore the lyrics, the lyrics feel like poems, im a sucker for that.
