The thing that really grinds my gears is when some channels that weren't disclosing their sponsored vids got called out, they tried to turn it around on their subscribers, etc. Either they tried to make it seem like you were trying to take food out of their mouths, or they were gaslighting you with, "Well, if you didn't know [even through they went out of their way to keep it from you], well that is your fault. Do you really think I'm doing this for free?" It's disingenuous and downright shitty to low-key guilt their viewers for keeping them honest.

I'm less likely to buy stuff from sponsored videos, yet I still prefer to be notified that they ARE being sponsored. If I found out someone I like does not disclose, I'm going to lose trust in them, perhaps even stop watching completely, but would be totally fine watching if we are told they are being sponsored. Thanks for the unboxing heads-up!! Your work is getting better and better!

Faith Myers yes exactly. Most people don't have a problem with sponsored content just be honest about it. It's not as obvious as a print ad or an ad on tv
@Gretaly
@Gretaly 7 жыл бұрын
True, but this is how all the ads work, even the commercials on TV. You have a company and you want to promote your product. You hire actors, musicians... whatever to say the ready script to promote the product. That's how the industry works. And to be honest, most industries work that way, even small shops. So it makes sense for the influencers to do the same. Free PR is a cheap promotional trick. The free item will get a few seconds of spotlight being featured in a video that many people will watch. But when a company sponsors an influencer, meaning that apart from the free products they also get paid, that means they're getting paid to say particular things or for the influencer to be absolutely positive about the product, after all that's what the money is buying. Some influencers accept only sponsorships for good items because they care about their image, they career and they don't want to trick their audience. Some others just get the money and don't care wether the product is crap or not.
@amandahaley4963
@amandahaley4963 7 жыл бұрын
ElvinaM again most people don't have a problem with sponsored content. They simply want it disclosed properly. We know an ad on tv is paid for and sponsored so we know that the person is being paid and has a script. So we can choose to believe them or not. With these influencers if they don't disclose that they are sponsored we think they are being honest about their opinions when the truth might be that they aren't being honest. It's really about disclosure.
@Gretaly
@Gretaly 7 жыл бұрын
Amanda Haley, I don't disagree. I was replying to a comment from another person, which is now apparently deleted. Obviously, they didn't understand how sponsorship works and what it really means. But yeah, you can never know when an influencer is telling the truth. Personally I don't take their word for granted, even if they're telling the truth, because skincare and makeup products don't work the same for everybody. The skin types differ and also what everyone wants is different. Some want dewy look, some prefer matte, some want spiderlegs lashes, some want definition, length, volume, cool tones, warm tones, nudes, creamy, silicony, waterbased, powdery products etc etc. So personally, I just go to the store, try out things and choose what I like.

Hmm wouldn't agree with that... I mean of course it puts a brand at the top of their list for potential reviews/features since they don't have to go out and source the product and pay for it or whatever but they get sent so much stuff that they wouldn't use crap just cause it's free... unless they are offered sponsorship and have no integrity which some don't...
@ElloLoJo
@ElloLoJo 7 жыл бұрын
catzzzgames and yeah in some cases influencers might be afraid to talk shit about certain brands if they want to stay on or lists/in their good book, but most of the time that means they just won't talk about a product. But I agree loads probably just do whatever will bring themselves the best outcome, but if you find people that are upfront and have integrity you do notice their realness and you don't have to second guess whether you trust them so much... but yeah there are loads and loads of influencers that you have to take their 'opinions' with a grain of salt

Jessica Leigh Right! I hate it and more and more of them seem to be doing it! I know it's their job and I don't begrudge them the "free stuff" per se, but it seems to just rub it in the nose of us normal people that we would never be able to afford that much stuff as most hauls are more than my paycheck! I have angry people that are saying I'm just jealous or butt-hurt, but it isn't that, it's just that it leaves a bad taste in my mouth to be so flippant about having so much when so many people have so little? idk

Safiye Grey the companies want them to show off all of the free stuff. Haven't you noticed how all of these PR unboxings all kind of got super popular all at once ? Girl, you need to look into Amelia Liana. She's a British youtuber and NEVER discloses affiliate links which violates quite a few laws in the UK. You made such a difference in how the US youtubers conduct their videos by exposing them and I feel that it is only fair that we help out our fellow consumers who only watch British gurus. I've called Amelia out in her comments sections a few times but I don't have a platform like you do. She tends to make a lot of 'haul' videos and 'current favourites' videos and EVERY SINGLE LINK is an affiliate, which makes it obvious that the entire purpose of the video is for her to make money without disclosing it. And the other half of her videos are outright sponsored. Please consider and keep up the good work :)

I used to be a sucker for beauty gurus and trusted their opinions and bought the stuff they recommended (which usually turned out to be super shitty stuff) then I found out that a lot of them are sponsored and don't disclose or they say ya I only partner with people I like (which usually means a shit ton of money or it doesn't interfere with current partnerships because a lot of makeup companies are run by similar parent companies) So I usually just watch these beauty gurus for inspiration on makeup looks not products. Nothing beauty gurus recommend or tell you is amazing is real. Especially when you're a Kathleen Lights, Manny MUA, Laura Lee, Nikkie Tutorials etc. When you're at that level no promo is free. A lot of them make deals that are way more detailed than you would think. Like ok we'll send you the PR package and then you need to include it in a favorites video and use it in 3 tutorials and a feature on instagram. The way that these gurus get around by not telling you about sponsorships is unreal.

They're also recording these videos suddenly as it shows each product, giving them air time without having to record an entire video surrounding the product(s). The benefit of this is that it encourages companies to (continue to) send them PR; the point of PR is to show it, after all. In my opinion, it's a lazy ass way for "influencers" to show products that are sent to them. I understand that several top "influencers" receive a lot of PR - too much, in my opinion - and that they don't have, or make, the time to record videos using/demonstrating all of the products. Of course, as a small channel, I wish that companies would see this as an opportunity; every big channel started small and, since we're not receiving loads of PR, what we do receive (most likely) gets air time...not simply a quick flash, but a full video. I know it's what I do. If a company takes the time and confidence in me and our channel to send me PR, I ALWAYS display/review the products in a video. It doesn't mean that I have to like the product, but I will always show them. And boy, I would be thrilled if a company like Skindinavia wanted to sponsor a video with me! After all, mature women not only benefit from products such as theirs, but it's a product that (I believe) is a necessity, as mature skin doesn't hold makeup as well as younger. As for Manny, I think he is going to have a very critical decision to make - if he wants to have sponsorships, which honestly, is needed to be successful, he is going to have to not only take a look at the way in which he talks/acts in his videos, but what and who is doing/hanging out with. I'm not criticizing, just pointing out reality. In my experience, companies don't want negative PR associated with them and they don't want cussing and talks of sex in them, either. But, it's his choice, clearly. The "unboxing trend," in my opinion, is just lazy, as I said; a quick way to glom every PR product into one video. The vlogger can say that they displayed the product, even though it only had 10-20 seconds of air time. If I was a company, I wouldn't be happy with this, as they invest a lot of money sending PR out and they need a return on that investment - i.e. air time. As for sponsored videos, I don't have an issue with them, so long as it's not one after the other. It's reality and viewers need to realize that, in order to be successful and earn money, you need, at some point, to post sponsored content. Otherwise, there's no way to make it a full-time job, which a successful channel requires. It's the non-disclosure that offends the heck out of me. I've watched videos that I darn well knew were sponsored - watched one just today by a top "influencer." But, it's their reputation...and a display of how they are willing to skirt the law and deceive their viewers. Not something I would ever do. Much love to you, sweetie! Shelbie =) 💋 BeautyDaughtMom 💜

This is one of the few things I like about Manny, he seems really honest and nonchalant about the pr and sponsored videos, and he also doesn't hide the fact that he's being sponsored or it's an ad.

Amrezy, Nicol Concilio, & Serein Wu are three people whose entire feeds are sponsored (Amrezy had 12 in one week), yet none of them ever disclose. I was thinking the other day how I've NEVER seen Tati disclose a sponsored video, yet the money she makes shows that she has to be doing them. As long as people are honest, I'm 100 percent cool w/ sponsored content. I'm grateful for people like Samantha Ravndahl, who did a periscope on what to watch for. She's the one who brought these PR unboxings being sponsored content to my attention.

I've never been a fan of unboxing videos. I like detailed tutorials and reviews because they are much more informative than seeing a product in it's packaging. I always skip these type of videos, no matter who does them. As for sponsored content, I appreciate the full disclosure. No need to hide it!

I love unboxing videos, because it's like I'm there unwrapping all the items myself without having to pay for them, lol. They're similar to general haul videos imo, and I love those as well. I like seeing what other people buy, as well as entire collection videos. I have nothing against spons videos, unless it's left undisclosed. I also find that I'm more tolerant of some influencers having spons'd videos than others. For example, I don't think Kathleen Lights can do no wrong. I think she's upfront and genuine. She rarely does spons videos, and when she does, she's very transparent about it, and plus she uploads an additional (unspons'd) video that week to make up for the fact she did a spons'd video. It's the influencers who do video after video of sponsored items. Also, it's super obvious that certain videos are spons'd bc a handful of the same influencers have a video on the exact same topic, like a concealer or how you're doing your makeup wrong. I find that annoying, tbh. Idk, I guess I'm just more tolerant of spons videos from influencers I find more genuine compared to others who I don't believe to be. :)

its funny that they do not disclose or hide it out of fear...because generally, people are more likely to like, buy, and support the people who are just straight up and honest about it. In fact, the more upfront and vocal you are (description box vs saying it in the video), the more people cheer you on for making money. KZbinrs will even spin it positively in that regard. The problem doesn't seem to be with the fact that people do sponsored vids/paid videos. Its the nondisclosure that gets them. So being very upfront about it works in their favor.

pr unboxing videos make me extremely jealous and envious. I know they aren't doing it to shove it in our faces but, still. knowing most of those products will go unused and/or get trashed, just makes me sad and angry. I know they do some giveaways but, not for the stuff they swatch once, I know Laura Lee says she donates the stuff she swatches, which is nice but, I doubt all of them do that. 😧

I don't have anything against sponsored videos. I enjoy the content of the people I subscribe to, and I am happy for someone to sponsor them so they can keep making stuff I like to watch. But yes, not disclosing it, especially if you are endorsing the sponsor, is shady. I need to know how much I can take someone's review at face value. So yeah, I don't resent any content creator taking on sponsorships, but I need them to be transparent about it.

As an up & coming beauty vlogger I don't see a problem with sponsored unboxing videos. For some, this pays a bill or 2. Do what you have to do but remain yourself in the mean time. I wouldn't give my viewers FAKE reviews just because they're sponsored. I'd simply only partner with brands that have stuff I actually like. I would always let viewers know that it's sponsored. It's only right. So yes, I don't like that some people hide their sponsorships. Honestly as a Viewer I'm not going to buy everything my favorite beauty VLOGGER posts because I have common sense & because I know she may not be paying for all of that. At the end of the day the viewer has the last call on whether he/she wants to purchase or not.

I love the youtubers (someone in particular comes immediately to mind) who are over the top with saying they received product in PR/the video is sponsored but NO MATTER WHAT I'M ALWAYS HONEST WITH YOU GUYS!!!!!!! Like, if that were true you wouldn't need to plead with us to believe you... Some people are so easy to spot. Oh, you just got the whole collection in PR and wanted to review it for us so we know what to buy? And you just happened to think the concept is so unique, like everything, LOVE some things, and upload this video the day the collection released with everyone else who did a sponsored review? What a coincidence!!!!

My pet peeve is the terminology "partnered with", and I'm glad you addressed it. It seems to me those words don't meet compliance with FTC rules. I mean, if there require you to be clear about what affiliate links mean (that using the link causes the poster to earn commission when a purchase is made), why would they allow do-it-yourself euphemisms for Sponsored and related terms. Jackie Aina's has said partnered and not used the word sponsored in several videos and that's when I first noticed it.
