The reason for the needless jump cuts was that the camera they used could only film about 30second takes at a time - so each time there a cut its because they ran out of footage. Plus the camera couldn't record sounds - so they have to overdub everything. Guess the director heard Orson Welles never recorded live sound and looped everything and said to himself, hey I'm just as good as Welles now

Manos is a very very bad movie. It might even be the worst. However you can't deny it has an atmosphere of dread, which you want in a horror movie. The painting, dog, awful music, even the weird cuts, bad adr, poor image quality, etc all make the experience strange and somewhat scary.
@anikmonette21405 жыл бұрын
My only problem with the movie is that it's really boring. Which is sad because you nailed it when you described the atmosphere of dread: in better hands, this movie would probably still have been bad, but at least somewhat entertaining. I know, because I watched it and it was so dull! However, I think it's worth a watch. Also, I'm being indulgent because the guy who made it(Warren) at least got shit done and himself seems quite aware that his efforts ended up in one of the worst film ever made... ; )
@carlwilkerson97225 жыл бұрын
I never hear anyone talk about it, but the soundtrack music nailed it. The free-form small-combo jazz, the "tension hook" motif here and there, the incidental music as a whole just impresses me as a good effort for a no-budget, homemade, pre-KZbin "feature film." Not even "Manos" was all bad.

i've heard conflicting responses, there are 2 trivia posts on imdb that say that tom neyman (actor of the master) made them, or that both tom neyman and the torgo actor (john reynolds) made the prosthetics together. the only entry that mentions the way he wore the braces states that he actually wore them correctly. according to the actress who portrayed the little girl (who was also the daughter of the actor of the master. she also published a book on the experience creating the movie!) torgo was only briefly considered to be a satyr in the first draft of the script, he was later changed to a hunchback, but a regular hunchback was considered too generic, so they made his knees big. unfortunately, john suffered from major depression before and during the shooting of the film. he grew up in an extremely conservative household and his parents were not accepting of the idea of him becoming an actor. he was addicted to drugs and alcohol and when he saw the way this film was going he fell into an even deeper depression because it was the only role he could land. he ended up committing suicide before the release of the movie, apparently because he didn't want to face his parents again.

@anikmonette21405 жыл бұрын
@@GoatPopsicle I agree. However, I did laugh at the scene with the wives bickering. There's even a shot where "The Master'' supposedly slaps a woman (very loosely)tied to a pole and he doesn't even come close of touching her. I like scenes like that. In Ator some men on horses attacks a small village and kidnap the chief's daughter, except that the guy on the horse is incapable of lifting her so she have to help him and it's very charming in its crappiness. They though no one would notice. Except that we did!
@GoatPopsicle5 жыл бұрын
anik monette I think I remember that scene in Ator, where she actually jumps up to get on the horse. Super fake “action scenes” like the slap in Manos, are what kill B-Movies for me normally. Because that’s the easiest thing to get right, if, you’ve hired a proper stunt Coordinator. Or even people with some experience behind the camera, and didn’t hire just local amateur photographers as cameramen. It just shows me they’ve cheap-ed out even on that, but weren’t committed enough to actually risk making it look slightly real by shooting it at a proper angle.
@anikmonette21405 жыл бұрын
@@GoatPopsicle Oh, I totally get what you mean, but for some reason the fact that they failed at something so easy to get right amuses me a lot. Like you said a lot could have worked better if it was shot at another angle. In Zaat it could have helped making the killing of a red shirt woman look a tad more realistic but nah! John Reynolds' performance as Torgo is proof that you shouldn't act while tripping on acid.
@flaccidego42912 жыл бұрын
Actually the guy who played Manos was friends with the guy who played Torgo & said he told him he wanted his character to be very skittish & figgidy, so the guy who played Torgo decided to drop 3 hits of acid an hour before filming his scenes so he would be in character. Lol. It's literally method acting on acid. Lol. From 7:13 - 7:23 u can clearly see those spasmodic effects that LSD has on the user. The way his face & upper body are constantly twitching are the classic spasmodic or "speeding" effects of LSD. Too dam funny. Reminds of another worst movie of all time 'Champagne & Bullets' where Wings Housers plays a 'wild card' type of character who's an alcoholic & so Houser decided that the best way to play a total drunk on film was to actually be totally drunk for all his scenes. Lmao.

One of the scenes with the mystery couple making out in the car you can actually see a clapper board on screen despite them using a camera that COULDN'T RECORD SOUND.
@michaelstearnesstearnes14982 жыл бұрын
Too bad the 2k restoration snipped the frames of the clapper board. That was one of the seminal moments in the film.

The cameras the “filmmakers” used were hand-wound and could only record 32 seconds at a time and couldn’t record audio. As a result, all of the actor's dialogue had to be dubbed in post-production (by like 4 people)

Oh god. Now that guy lives with a full-blown Messiah complex. Neil Breen is so out of touch, he thinks he makes a realistic love interest for a early-20s hottie, as a out of shape dude in his 50s-60s; while also thinking the speeches he makes in his movies “will change the world”. If I was going to be crazy, that’s the kind of crazy I want to be.

@MioRaem Жыл бұрын
Apparently the crew themselves found the production so ridiculous and bemusing, that between themselves they called it "Mango: The Cans of Fruit" without telling the director, who genuinely believed in the film. I'm not making this up.
@parisgreen46003 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this review! At 16:55 I love the guy's eye-rolling - it really harks back to the silent movie era. And the beginning of the 'wife-fight' where they're sparring like the Sharks and the Jets. The movie reminds me of a series of short indie films I saw years ago, back when videotape was just becoming a thing, and they were just extraordinarily bad (out of focus, no plot, garbled sound, etc.)...but...they did get me to think about how we even define films - like, does there need to be some basic level of coherence and skill? Or is it enough that someone had an idea and a camera, and that makes it art?
