What an absolutely beautiful conversation! The compassion, the empathy, the willingness to connect with others that this man has within him is truly gorgeous. It's clear he understands that his faith is for himself, to help him navigate how to be the best version of himself to help others. From his stories, it can be said that his father intuitively knew his son had a heart of service and made sure to nurture that heart to help him put it into action. What a lovely human being. I really enjoyed this episode, as well as many of the episodes and the podcast itself. As a Hawaii "Local" of 15+ years and having raised my family here, Manti Te'o is no stranger to the Islands. We, and I mean all of Hawaii, has followed his whole football career. We love him. He is inspirational, he is humble, and his faith (no matter where it's coming from) has help him pull through the mud. Thank you so much / Mahalo nui loa for sharing your uplifting story and life. When Manti talked about ‘who am I?’ It resonated deep in my soul, especially what cross each of us has to bare... @@Deb5S5111 Thank you for your kind words and some very sage advice. I do have all but one of my boys, geographically close to me.. So, 2 sons & 1 daughter along with 10 Grandkids live 10 minutes from me! I am very very grateful. And I can tell my grown children when they ask how I’m doing! It’s others that I say “I’m fine” because the tears come when less expected… my sweet and only daughter suggested that when asked to say “I’m managing” and wow! Those two words have made such a difference when running into people. Thank you once again! ❤️

Not knowing his catfish affair previously, I can’t even imagine the gossips, stupidities, jokes, memes, chaos, & a wonderful career almost destroyed he sure suffered! Such an episode! I’ve a kind of knot in my throat, along with an imense joy for Manti. That’s what this podcast, its guest and authors use to do to me always. As the elder of six, how much I can relate myself to Manti in holding from a too early age too much responsabilities. But we’re separated by a generation. I live in Europe and I’m in my 60’s. Asking myself if that old fashioned way his family or/and religion raised him in these days failed him to be prepared in front of the big suffering and giant hoax he was victim of. Or if it was the one that precisely let him successfully overcome it..

I saw a short on this interview and I went to the Netflix documentary. I was like “oh yeah I remember this story.” Throughout the documentary all I kept thinking was this isn’t even a big deal why are they giving THIS guy such a hard time. I’m not saying it didn’t suck, but what I could not get was how bad the media was hitting this guy. I came back to see this interview and I am very happy this guy was able to build an amazing life for himself after all this. He ain’t bad looking either 😂 you’re right, boy did he grow up . 😂

I’m from Hawaii and we have loved and followed Manti forever. But I have never heard him open up or heard his perspective in the things that Mayim eloquently brought up. His story about what his dad said about why there are homeless people made me think that his God brought this unbelievable catfishing situation on him to test him albeit a test of catastrophic proportions. But what came to light in this interview is what a solid and grounded person he is because of his family upbringing and faith. It provides more insight that the Polynesian athletes of some notoriety like Manti, Marcus Mariota, and Tua Tagovailoa have always showed that family and faith have been the reason for their success. And they are all similar in their politeness, humbleness and demeanor as good people. This was only the second podcast that I’ve seen in its entirety, the other being with Dustin Hoffman and Mayim is onto something great with her way of asking the right intelligent questions where the guest is comfortable enough to open up and provide great perspective. Great podcast Mayim!

The very last thing he said was so impactful for me. It was such a good reminder that God made me to be who I am, and if there are are people with whom I fundamentally disagree, that is okay bc I can only be who I am, I cannot let myself spend time wondering why those people are how they are. ❤️🙏🏻 I am going to watch this over and over so I can reiterate this to myself and it can, once again, be a part of me. I thought this was a great episode and he is so thoughtful and articulate. But the fact that he DOES NOT know that there are six main islands of Hawaii - the last being Molokai. Molokai is still historical and culturally truly Hawaiian. It needs to be honored and included.

I think he is very thoughtful and compassionate. I notice that he can't seem to include a very large group of us. It may be his religion. That's why I have no space in my life for religion. Most either persecute you to the extreme, or marginalize you. It's usually the former. I'm not other.

Don't be upset about the "White privilege" comment. Keep it in perspective. Yes, there probably is white privilege, but it's just one type of privilege. The supreme privilege is beauty privilege and that comes in all colors, so a beautiful black woman has more privilege than an average white woman. There are many types of privilege (money, school, athletic ability), so again, to me it's about perspective.
