I know the video is old, but just in case anyone comes across it: he's explaining it backwards: OPENING the boost controller (i.e. reducing the pressure of the controller spring), is going to allow MORE air to reach the TOP of the wastegate. This air will fight to keep the wastegate closed and thus RAISE boost. At 1:43, he "increases resistance" by twisting the boost controller "down" in order to "raise the boost." He's actually lowering the boost (by reducing the air inside the TOP of the wastegate). This is even reflected when looking at the gauge between the two tests. This could be important for some people on a new build, trying to run off wastegate for testing. Especially since the adjustment decal some controllers align with this video because they were designed for an internal wastegate setup.

What if i just use the lower tip of the wastegate and connect with 2 port of the manual boost controller.( From turbo prrssure source goes to 1 tip of the boost controller and other one goes to the lower tip of the external wastegate and the top of the wastegate vent it to air..can it actually increase the boost pressure?

is it bad to run the waste gate from mainfold source or should i add a fitting to my turbo outlet?

I can't say if either is right or wrong. But I try to run my pressure source before the throttle body or as close to the turbo as possible. So personally I run it from the turbo. I'm sure other people may say yah or nah. But I've never had an issue doing it that way

on that gate theres 2 top port right so 1 goes with vacuum how abou the other port do i need to block it or leave it as a vent ?

The other can be left to vent. However if you have a top dollar multi port boost controller say a ams unit then you would connect to that. (4 port controller in other words). Hope this helps :)

jacob anderson that is question most will have varied responses. Some would say you can "T" the line between the compressor and the wastegate. Personally I like to take it from a source off the intake manifold. Hope this helps

@@HighPerformanceNetwork my setup is built, woo! I only have a 6psi spring and the wastegate for now until I get everything tuned. I'll send a video of the blow off valve making sound on the road, maybe tomorrow. Thanks again!

ok thank you. ill be looking forward to your video. i want to put a 3mm shim in my HKS external wastegate. its currently on 8psi. i dont want to put a boost controller in. do you know roughly how much the boost will will go up with 3mm thick shim?

+Frozen 782 That sounds like a familiar figure for some reason. But the one I installed int the video went from 7-8psi to 9-10psi. Its important to note although a 3mm may yield around 2psi, its a progressive setup so if you used 6mm it would more than likely be around 5-6psi

+Frozen 782 It will have to confirm the exact size, but it was picked it up at the local hardware store and they only had a few gauges. I plan on revisiting this test with greater detail in the coming weeks Thank you for the comment

What if the pressure line normally runs from the turbo to the intake manifold can I disconnect it from the manifold or would that cause problems?

A 3/16 barb should be somewhere on the turbo side. If it ain't on the turbo then it should be on the pressure pipe coming off the turbo. I've seen some tdo5's like that. If my comment doesn't help. You can send me a picture of what you have and I can advise from there

hi dude !!! I have a question, I have understood your videos perfectly, you have explained everything perfect and you have cleared me many doubts, however, my situation is that I have a project but it will be supercharger, not turbocharged, something simple between 5-7 psi, but I will not have wastgate and I have been asking some questions, if the same procedure can be done but instead of being the wastgate it could be with the BOV? maybe a T between the intake manifold line and BOV? I know that there is a vacuum that is generated within the intake manifold after the butterfly of the throttle body closes when it stops accelerating to be able to deflect by means of the BOV the pressure that remains before the throttle body. However, I would like to know if the engine is accelerating and the supercharger generating boost, while the throttle body butterfly is open and there is pressure in the intake manifold; can the boost controller be located between the line that goes from the intake manifold to the BOV? I appreciate your answer very much.

Hello Julio, Thank you for the question and kind comments. Will do my best to answer as truthfully i'm not real knowledgeable on supercharger systems. But I have seen AMG Benz with superchargers that have some form of boost control as an option, exactly how it's done I am not certain. But I due know from experience roots "style" blowers are strange to have boost control options as they mainly use the pulley size (under or oversized) to control the rate blower rotation. As for blow off valve, think from memory they may have to be vented back into the system (recirculated) but not certain about that one.....If i were to recommend a supercharger system it would be a rotrex unit. (jacksonracing.com/product/rotrex-c38-supercharger-units/) Not only are they more efficient than a standard blower. But i think they could be the answer to all your questions......Hope this was helpful, as im not a supercharger guy. Hi I got a 14psi spring in my external wastegate I have hooked the compressor line to the boost controller then from there to the bottom port of wastegate then teed it off for boost gauge and I’m only getting 10psi in whatever I do

Hmm. That’s an interesting one. And your certain it’s a 14psi spring and not 7psi.!? Hmmm. Next step would be to verify if you have a boost leak somewhere in the system. If no leak. Then I would proceed to remove the boost control line on the waste gate (so it’s running on spring pressure) but leave the boost gauge hooked up direct to manifold pressure. If it goes to 14 then could be a faulty boost controller. That would be how I would do it. Let me know if that helps.

+Oscar Henriquez Personally I like to tee the line from the throttle body to fuel pressure reg for my boost gauge line. But If i understand your question correctly, you may get a delay if your running the manual boost controller, wastegate, turbo compressor and boost gauge. I dont see why it wouldnt work but its a lot of teeing going on lol

That makes sense. So really, the vaccumm source that goes to the boost guage can come from anywhere? From the intake manifold etc. I had the understand it had to be on the same line as the manual boost controller as showcased on the video

Oscar Henriquez Yup. once the source is from an intake source, most people use the line connecting the turbo compressor to actuator for the bov as in some cases its easy to get to. but either line is ok to use. Quick way to test is if you remove the line when the engine is on, you should feel it sucking lol

NinoSwavae that hole is normally used with a three or four port boost controller solenoid. Can be used to add more pressure than the wastegate spring can physically manage.

Q Man this setup can be used to increase boost pressure as it would hold the spring under tension for a longer period. However if you wanted to lower boost pressure that can be a bit tricky as each spring have a minimum boost pressure (8psi) to go below that pressure I've seen people make calculated holes somewhere in the system to bleed that pressure off. Lol but no one ever wants lower boost :)

Rene Reyes if it's a stock turbo you may have to install a "T" fitting to share the pressure source. If it's an aftermarket turbo. Then you can drill and tap barb in the inlet/compressor side of the turbo piping. Once the pressure source is before the throttle body. That's the important thing. But mainly the closer you can get to the turbo the better. Hope this helps :)

Ricardo Lebron in that case you may have to drill and tap a brass barb fitting onto a charge pipe coming from the turbo. Basically the first pipe you have access to that’s connected to the turbo compressor. However if you have a factory turbo then you may already have a barb line you can tap into. What vehicle do you have ?

@@HighPerformanceNetwork well I got a 6262 precision turbo but I got to rebuild it so I'm using now by the time that I got the precision done a Ebay cheap turbo with a turbonetics Wastegate and tial blow off with a manual boost controller so I'm kind of confused now after watching your vid btw it's a b16a

Ricardo Lebron ok. No prob. We can find a solution. You can technically use a line from the plenum. Not a fan of using from the manifold though. But other than installing a barb on the intake pipe or hell you can even drill n tap the eBay compressor housing. And ahhh the old B16 loll brings back so many memories

No need for that, I just need extra 0.2-.0.3 bar of boost, MBC will be plenty enough plus it's really hard to get to the turbo on my car :)

This wastegate came already installed when i purchased the car. But it is a HKS 50mm from my understanding and can see faded marking.....The wastegate is one of the most crucial items on a turbo vehicle. Mostly everything else can be purchased from ebay. But the Turbo, WG and BOV should all be higher quality if possible.

You realize that a BOV is basically just a piston and a spring. No need to spend a ludicrous amount on something like a HKS BOV, which is $200 bucks.

High Performance Network external wastegate. It's an eBay turbo. Looks like it's meant to come off the side of the turbo like in your video but it's plugged off. Like they were going to put a hole there, and then didn't.

FroztiProductions ahh double check that the plug doesn't have a hex head threaded bolt. I've seen people block that one off and use a pressure source closer to the intake manifold

If it is a bolt then if you able to access it. You maybe able to extract it and use that. Hope this helps

High Performance Network I would have to drill through it. It's not plugges by a bolt. They made a place for the hole then didn't drill through in the machining process.

Chuck & Amy Rhymer this was an old turbonetics 50mm if memory serves me. With it being positioned so far down. Once she opened it was super aggressive echoing off the road surface...Good times they were :)
