Validation and verification are two important concepts in software testing: Validation - Validating that the product meets the customer's needs. It answers the question - "Are we building the right product?" - Validating requirements to ensure they are correct and meet customer expectations. - Prototype demos and reviews to validate design solutions. - User acceptance testing to validate the software works as expected. Verification - Verifying the product has been built correctly. It answers the question - "Have we built the product right?" - Reviews of requirements, design, code to verify quality. - Testing at unit, integration, system levels to verify against specs. - Static analysis of code to verify compliance to standards. The key differences: - Validation is about the customer perspective, verification is about the developer perspective. - Validation confirms the system meets the user needs, verification confirms the system meets the specified requirements. - Validation is done earlier to ensure we're building the right product, verification is done later to ensure we're building the product right. - Validations methods involve more customer feedback, verification methods involve more inspections and tests.
