I started my tour of the Alhambra in the early evening when it was still light. By the end of my tour dusk had fallen and it was an amazingly different atmosphere as the darkness fell and all the night lights were switched on. It was even more magical then, if you can imagine it!! Absolutely stunning.

It's impossible to put into words how beautiful the Alhambra is. From the sublimely elegant and complex Islamic architecture, to the use of water, the presence of which can be seen in so many parts of the palace, served not only an aesthetic purpose, but as a symbolic giver of life. What an incredible building set in an incredible landscape. Thank you, Manuel, for a video, the making of which was clearly a labour of love.

@@sandraleiva1633 Actually, it is Islamic, not only in that it references architecture from across the Islamic world, but also because Islamic motifs, texts and architectural ideals are literally woven in to the fabric of the buildings. That doesn't mean it's not also Spanish; it is. However, the Andalusia of then and the Spain of the post-Reconquista are two very different things. The people who built the Alhambra were murdered, tortured and ethnically cleansed from what is now 'Spain', by the ancestors of the current Spaniards. By ignoring the real Islamic contributions to the buildings, you are also contributing to that same erasure.

@@user-ed7et3pb4o No it's not Islamic. It's Hispanic Muslim architecture. It's Andalucian architecture. Islamic encompasses architecture not related to each other. Hispanic architecture is different from Persian architecture. Just like French architecture is different from Nordic architecture and you don't use the word Christian architecture. You separate it by regional differences of cultures and the peoples who created them.

You are much, much much better than guidebooks and tourist guides because you get into the REAL history of a place rather than quickly run through a “greatest hits” list of the facts relating to the place. Knowing the history and the people involved in the creation of cities and important buildings gives me a greater and deeper sense of appreciation of them. How these cities/buildings were designed and constructed without any of our modern technology is a testament to the genius of the designers and artisans. I’m in awe of these people!

this is such a beautiful video, so well researched and so obviously brimming with passion. my grandma was from northern Spain (San Sebastian) so whenever we discussed Spanish art and architecture, we were mostly relegated to Gothic standards of beauty like Barcelona and Santiago de Compostela. Never ever did I hear her talk about Granada except to denote southern Spain as filled with “moros and maquetos.” However, I’ve always thought that southern Spain was the most beautiful part of the country. So many centuries of Arabic and North African influence, the amazing Mediterranean climate AND THE FOOD! In my opinion its just as complex and beautiful as northern Spanish culture.

There is so much life and motion built into the design and decoration -- nothing feels static, there don't seem to be any hard boundaries, just endless openings into interior and exterior spaces and changing elevations with the light and the breezes and the water all constantly in motion reinterpreting the appearance of the built space moment to moment. To combine an early morning in the Alhambra with a necessary relaxation in the Banos Arabes and supper on a terrace in the Albaicin is one of the most exquisitely perfect experiences (of many) offered by Andalucia. Your content enhances (and reminds me) of the experience thank you. It would be fascinating to make a programme about ancient hydrology. The similarities between these aspects of Islamic architecture and say the Villa Adriana with its vast reflective pools and complex water structures are very striking. The skills involved every bit as dazzling as the latticework but largely invisible.

@@deanedge5988 It's not ugly or irrational. There are many words you can use that doesn't describe architecture in religious terms. You see your prejudice shows when you reduce a varied array of peoples into one neat box. Such as their religion. You do not use Christian architecture to describe French, Italian and English architecture. You use terms such as Baroque, Gothic or neo-byzantine etc. But you see Europeans as varied and other peoples as monolithic. That's a very European prejudice. If that hurts you then so be it. It should stimulate you to learn more and grow your vocabulary and understanding. For example Hispanic Islamic narrows it down as opposed to Islamic. Hispanic architecture is not similar to Indian Islamic architecture. You can also use Andalusian architecture, Mozarabic architecture because not everyone was Muslim. You can use Arabesque. So many words that doesn't narrow things down to a religion brought from far far away. You don't do that for European Christian lands so don't do it to other religions either. Or if you want just describe everything in Christian lands as Christian architecture because Christians designed them irregardless of where in Christendom they originated or in what age they took place. At least that would be fair. Have a great day.

@@sandraleiva1633 Yes the Islamic patterns and writing, as well as gardens referencing the Koran surely had nothing to do with Islam. Just as the churches formed in the shape of a cross couldn't have had anything to do with Christ. It is all relative to the viewpoint and norms of the viewer. To the christian spaniard it is islamic architecture. Just as to the Muslim in Syria, the many christian buildings from the time christianity was dominant could be seen as christian. (As well as whatever subcategory level of specificity you might prefer.) The thing about islam is it is a theocracy where church and state are one thing. Christianity separates the roles of church and state to a far greater degree. The class of architecture is Islamic and subclass would have more precise definitions you seek. The Islamic colonizer was deliberately bringing Islamic philosophy to their design decisions. They would not be offended in recognizing this as the script looping everywhere is talking about Allah Akbar. "God is great." Total mystery as to what that means.

@@sandraleiva1633 The palace was built by Muslims, and the calligraphy integrated into the decor are verses in the Qur'an. Islam permits no separation of religion and rulership -- what we call "church" and "state," in the Western world. The Alhambra includes not only audience chambers and offices for governance, as well as residences for those who rule, but also mosques. As stated repeatedly in the description, the layout of the primary courtyards reflects Paradise, as it is described in Qur'an. Why would anybody describe it as anything *other than* "Islamic Architecture"?

Thank you for this amazing viewing experience! I have seen some views of the castle exterior before and the unimpressive lion fountain. What you show here was very surprising. Your views of the interior spaces are mind-blowing. It's interior beauty is unearthly, harmonius and very spiritual. This is clearly architecture from a superior civilization.

Breathtaking, amazing! I am not sure if this is one of the wonders of the world, but it should be. Almost every surface is decorated. It is a miracle that it survived basically as it was built. Absolutely exceptional piece of art! (I am curious how they got the water up there - there must have been some viaduct from a higher ground nearby?). I wasn't sure where I would go next, but this is the place to visit for sure. If we humans were smarter than we are now, we could make this world a better place, creating similar settings to live. This was created in the "Middle Ages", and no modern architecture can match it; it is the ultimate achievement!!! Thank you for the video.
