This milling machine has a spindle made for W20 collets. This means that in order to install cutters, it is necessary to have mandrels for them with a smooth part for collets.
But I decided not to use collets when holding cut-off and modular cutters for the following reasons.
1. Collets cannot deliver high torque.
2. I want to reduce the external runout of the cutter, which consists of the runout of the spindle, collet, mandrel and the cutter itself.
Instead of a collet and a simple mandrel, I decided to make one special mandrel, which is immediately inserted into the spindle and on which the cutter is put on.
Wherein
- the value of the possible transmitted moment from the spindle to the cutter increases;
- the total runout of the cutter is reduced.
It details how I made the custom arbors and then shows in detail the manufacturing process to ensure minimum runout for parting off and modular cutters.
These mandrels can be installed not only in the horizontal spindle of the machine, but also in the vertical one. And also in the dividing head. Now you can try to make gears.
These mandrels can also be put on the Schaublin-90 lathe, because it has exactly the same spindle, if it becomes necessary to mill the part on a lathe.
