I've been kind of binge watching this kind of video for the past several days and reading the comments. Two things come to mind: 1.They have done so much with so little for so long that they can do almost anything with nothing. 2.They will spend a lot of time working on something that is of the best 'precision' they can muster and then just throw it on the dirt/concrete/stone floor. I am wondering if it is a lack of training or just a big 'F U' to the boss/owner/trading company. One thing is for sure - after the apocalypse, these guys will run the show.

Lack of training. The lathe operator probably is the boss. He probably inherited the business from his father or uncle.

Shop rules in Pakistan state beat everything with a hammer and when finished throw it in the dirt. It must be a rule because every manufacturing or vehicle repair facility follows these rules. Note to self, do not buy anything made in Pakistan if safety is a priority.

You are supposed to have a guy brushing off the slag when forging, otherwise the glop gets embedded in the metal. Also the lathe has a worm drive, why doesn’t the guy use it?
@jonnymiskatonic2 жыл бұрын
Some scale in forging isn't gonna make any difference when they're cutting through any critical surfaces on the lathe anyway. Sure it'll wear out the lathe tool a bit quicker cutting through that harder scale, but I doubt the time savings to brush is worth it for what they're doing. No idea about not using the power feed for the cutting. Maybe it's just quicker for them manually, not worried about setting up stops or making sure to kick it out of drive at just the right moment. Might have had too many people break things that way so now dude is just like "I'll do it myself."

Have you ever noticed in all these video's there is always some overweight chap sat on his backside in the background doing absolutely nothing. I can only presume it's either the boss or some sort of foreman. (see 7min 53 sec) I am not a machinist so I am speaking with no knowledge of the industry at all but the guy machining the spindle on the lath using a metal rule isn't exactly correct and the job just doesn't seem to be centred on the lath. Surely to machine an accurate part there should be some sort of jig that turns each piece exactly the same as as accurate as the last piece. All I can see are pieces made to very poor tolerances and all will be different to the last.
@keithammleter38242 жыл бұрын
The lathe operator, who most likely has never been to a trade school, is pretty much incompetent. If he set up his lathe properly, with cooling, use power drive (ie the lead screw) and carriage travel stops, he could do the job with precision in a fraction of the time. And have no need to mess about with hammering gauge rings and hand filing to size. A simple go/no go gauge made from flat sheet is all that should be needed. The use of go/no go gauges is pretty standard when you need to make quantities of identical parts on simple manual (non-CNC) lathes. They have 2 sets of parallel edges - one set on the minimum allowable diameter and one on the maximum allowable diameter. They take 10 minutes or so to make. In the West, before CNC, you would find a copying capstan lathe used for this type of work. You set it up to be controlled by a profile plate, then all you have to do is load the blank forging and the lathe does the rest automatically under hydraulic sequence control. 1920's technology. For non-forged blanks, you don't even have to load the blank -the copying lathe loads for you. I too have noticed there is usually some chap, usually older, just sitting around. You hardly ever see old guys actually working. That's likely because these guys have no concept of safe working - they get seriously injured (eg have done their back in due to not knowing safe lifting method) and can no longer work, so they sit around and give advice.

@aleksandersuur94752 жыл бұрын
@@LegendLength What forging does to material, depends entirely on the material. For steels forging is very important because when steel is cast in an ingot, the material crystallizes in a granular structure. Forging stretches and compacts the material, granules get stretched out and the entire thing is mixed into more homogeneous structure. Material properties of steel are significantly improved by forging. Here though, they don't give two figs about material properties, the stock material is some rando scrap they managed to find and there is absolutely no control on thermal treatment.
