Interesting. I worked on crank lines at Ford, GM and Mitsubishi as an OEM service engineer for 20 years. It seems that they are missing a few steps. There are no undercuts on the bearings and no heat treatment either. These cranks look nice but my experience tells me that they will only last a few months before failing. We worked hard to hold tolerances down to the tens of microns but I can't see how they are even holding to several thousands. Our crank lines had 50+ ops. This one is skipping many essential steps. What they are doing is impressive but these cranks would compare to what the US was producing in the 1930's.

I suspect the tolerances they are dealing with are pretty big engine wide. They don’t even use torque wrenches.

A quick search of the casting number will tell that this is for a Perkins 135 engine. It's a stationary 3 cylinders diesel used in generators so they will only run at a preset speed, unlike car and truck engines that will indefinitely idle, increase speed, decrease speed, overspeed etc...all while the load and temperature constantly changes. And also some of them have to endure their common nemesis, super clueless drivers.

@@blabla-kk8bl Sure you can. We used induction heat treating on both cast and forged cranks. The GM plant in Tennessee did both types on parallel lines. The procedure is different for cast and forged parts but I can guarantee you that you can heat treat both.

The great thing about this video is that all the comments are acknowledging the application of skill with very limited facilities and probably training, but also that modern manufacturing techniques and equipment will make more, better and cheaper product. At the end of it, these cranks are low quality, but also good enough for the application, manufacturing them is paying wages and the end product is being put to work and will also be making someone money so they can all feed their families. Well done done to all who are overcoming the challenges of life without the stepping stone of being born in an industrially advanced nation 👍

It would be good to know exactly what these are for. I think most people assume they are for gas/diesel engines, but more likely this is low-speed industrial machinery (like for a water pump or air compressor).

They are already multiple steps away from the design process. The mold designer for the casting and process manager are the real brains behind this operation. These guys have skills but they have been instructed to do what they are doing, they didn't make the process they are following orders from the designer who would be following orders from the engineer.

I have worked for a little over a decade in the physical labour and i have both experienced as well as seen people going to hospital with not so pleasant injuries. If you do such job fulltime year in year out then the chance is pretty big something nasty is going to happen. Especially with the total lack of anything related to safety in this workshop. Nobody wants to get home at the end of the workday with some ripped off limbs. The only problem is that people in such countries have little choice as there is nothing better there. This is more about understanding their unfortunate situation than about being a criticist. Yeah, criticizing their employer for not caring about their health.

These craftsmen ( and women ) that I see on these videos turn out some amazing items in less time, with less tools and less people than equivalent production places, namely first world countries ( whatever first world means these days ). No middle men, no bosses at desks, no labour disputes, and I bet they’re a lot cheaper than what you pay in North America or Europe, for example. It’s small businesses like this , and thousand more, that really help to keep the country running, and people working. No one’s getting rich, but they feed their families. Things don’t change a whole lot in countries like this when the pandemic hit. People still had to eat. People who don’t rely on their government to help them fare better in times of stress.

When I was young, I worked in a crankshaft manufacturing plant...two VERY IMPORTANT steps I didn't see were 'heat treating', followed by 'straightening'...without which, you'd have a soft crank that when it warmed up, would draw-to-warp...and I KNOW that building we saw wasn't large enough to house a 100-ton press to straighten a crank... Hard workers, though...

Heat treatment is required mostly for friction wear resistance on bearings surfaces and can be useful for fatigue resistance purposes. Nowadays on usual car crankshaft this second purpose is in most cases replaced by undercut fillet rolling, which can also straighten the crankshaft after the heat treatment. Keep in mind that those crankshafts are well oversized, for engines with a narrow and low rpm range, which is definitely not the case in the EU/US/Japan car industry since the 80s. Also, the specific pressure applied on each bearing is probably very far to what we see on modern era designs. Grey cast iron can bring good enough hardness for the purpose of friction resistance so heat treatment might not be a mandatory operation, provided you bring associated materials on the other side. Along with bigger machining allowance, (which are incredibly costly in mass production as you'll have to account for the biggest raw part possible and program your CNC accordingly with lengthy times not making chips on most of your production), you can totally avoid the straightening operation.
