I have the 2019 etron Prestige and the vehicle has been awesome. I had an issue with the AWD system, Audi took care of it with ease. Many of the issues he's complaining about are out of frustration. The etron drives better than Tesla, my opinion at least. If you want to drive fast car and get passes everyone, get a Tesla. If you want a quality built vehicle with total comfort, buy the Etron. Just because some Tesla caught on fire does not make Tesla bad overall. Your bad experiences does not account for all Etrons. I love my heads-up display, massage, cold and heated seats. I Love my Etron!

I have an Audi Etron, first edition. I totally disagree with you on many things. To start, to remove the charger, you need to follow the instructions. It's not hard and works flawlessly. I feel that you made this video simply for ratings. In summary, my experience has been positive and would buy this car again.

This is a curious video, with lots of useful information and valid impressions of the e-tron, but with an overall tone of disappointment that seems to indicate that you established expectations based on how other EVs operate, and now believe that every new EV made should conform to your expectations. Perhaps you could consider that widespread EV adoption is not as much about tailoring cars to existing early adopters, but more a matter of making "normal" cars that happen to not have a gas engine. You start the video with a description of your enthusiasm to be one of the 1st to experience Audi's 1st generation of their 1st fully electric car, but you go on to describe a number of areas where you are disappointed that the product is not fully matured and you are exposed to the "growing pains" of a company that is trying to expand itself in a new direction. Every EV that I've experienced coming to market has had quirks that were unique to the 1st batches of cars, and every manufacturer has struggled to get their sales and service personnel up to speed on the new offerings. With regard to disconnecting from the EVSE, it sounds like you are not accustomed to an EV that latches on to the plug in order to prevent theft and/or tampering. The e-tron is my 5th Electric vehicle and it did confuse me the 1st time i tried to disconnect it, but I recalled that my salesperson told me that I'd have to press the button to disconnect. Since then it's just been a matter of patience. Press the button, wait for the light, listen for the latch to release, then unhook the car. On my other EVs, I was able to disable this feature, and since I charge almost exclusively at home, I would disable it given the option, but I wouldn't describe this as a defect as you do. I agree that the door latch behavior is not ideal. I have not yet figured out all of the circumstances that lead to the need of a 2nd pull, but I have had other cars that when locked, required 2 pulls to open the door. The 1st pull unlocks it and the 2nd pull opens it. I'm not sure this is how the e-tron operates, some have said it's just a matter of getting the right cadence on the lever pull, but either way, the 2nd pull is just instinctive for me now and I don't even think about it anymore. With regard to the shifter, the shift pattern is the same as every other console shift I've driven, except that Park is not at the top, it is a separate function, and the lever position by default is essentially neutral. In every console shift I've driven, drive is always engaged by pulling back, and reverse is always forward from drive. I believe the e-tron operates very similar to the Nissan Leaf. The BMW i3 that you show in the video would take some getting used to since it is the opposite of everything I have experienced. Yes the Electrify America Network is related to a settlement, so what? It is a network under construction and it looks like they are planning to build 4 charging stations in the San Francisco area, which is double the number of locations that Tesla has built, and the stations Tesla has built are not 150kw. If you are looking for fast charging, I'm not sure why you would drop to Chargepoint's L2 network, EVGo appears to have about 11 50kW CCS chargers in the San Francisco area. I would have expected an i3 driver to be aware of this. With the upcoming merger of the Electrify America and the EVGo network, you can look forward to 15 or more L3 fast charging location in San Francisco and may more in the surrounding area. My experience with ChargePoint is that it is not a compatibility issue with the e-tron, it's just that ChargePoint is message happy no matter what car I am charging there. I've learned to use my car app to verify whether the car is charging or not and ignore/disable Chargepoint's noise. One thing that I was surprised that you didn't mention about the e-tron is the current state of the car app, but since you didn't mention it, I won't belabor it here. I think the Memory seats, keyfob issues and the recall are all examples of choosing to be a 1st generation guinea pig. With regard to efficiency, the e-tron is a big heavy luxury car that is full of creature comforts and is shaped like a normal car. Comparing it's efficiency to a sub-compact carbon fiber bubble that rolls on motorcycle tires is ridiculous. Even in your video, you can see that the remaining range is only colored red, because you have scrolled to a detail screen that is associated with the range. As you scrolled, other sections of the top bar turned red to highlight that you were looking at the details associated with that item. With regard to range, Audi appears to be one of the only vehicles that appears to attempt to report range accurately and not exaggerate the range as a marketing ploy. They are currently conservative with how much of the battery capacity they use, perhaps with experience the y will open up a bit more of the battery through a software update. I believe that Tesla is the only EV maker that acts as if you have the full advertised battery capacity at your disposal, every EV I've owner has claimed a battery size (for maximum federal tax credit purposes) and then delivers 70-90 percent of that capacity as usable Tesla boasts a big range number, then warn owners not to use all of the battery capacity for normal daily use, and not to fast charge it too often, or the battery will be damaged. People who don't pay heed to the warnings have difficulty with overheating and premature failure of the batteries. It's a bit early to judge, but Audi seems to have protected themselves from these problems by taking a more conservative approach, although they still recommend setting the max charge level in relation to your daily needs to further protect the life of the battery. Tesla drivers also commonly report that their real world range is significantly less than what the Guess-O-Meter predicts. So far the report I have seen on the Audi is that the range indicator is a fairly accurate representation based on recent driving trends. Your characterization of the way Audi has implemented regeneration implies that they don't understand it's potential. I would tend to think the opposite. The Audi manages regeneration elegantly without the driver having to have to understand regeneration theory. Pressing the brake pedal does not apply the brakes until the car is almost to a complete stop. Pressing the brakes merely gradually increases the regeneration using a mechanism that the average driver is already familiar with. One pedal driving is sometimes not the most efficient, because regeneration has losses. Coasting and gliding are far more effective uses of potential energy, if your goal is moving forward. Regeneration is only really relevant when you want to slow down. I have cars that allow closer to one-pedal driving than the e-tron, but I don't fool myself into thinking that it is somehow superior or more efficient. In the case of my Volt it was somewhat dangerous since it did not turn on the brake lights. The good news is that as you said, this car have the glitches sorted out and refinements to the driving experience added through software updates, but the excellent luxurious features and the fit and finish will still be there. Other car companies that lack the luxury and quality of the Audi can also do software updates, but it will never add to the quality of luxury of the physical car.

Thank you for the detailed and thoughtful reply. I agree with many of your points. The net is I had high expectations for the eTron, and many things grind on using it daily. My aspiration in making this video was to inspire Audi to fix it for current eTron owners including myself, and future customers. I think it's great that Audi has designed the vehicle to make the transition from ICE to the eTron more familiar, and I mentioned that in the video. However that doesn't need to leave behind those of us whom are fond of features offered by other EV's such as one petal driving. This is particularly relevant when the differences could be entirely controlled in SW, such as one petal driving. I agree that as an early adopter there are growing pains, however the problem is that most of the problems raised are not EV specific, and are likely problems with any of the new ZFAS series vehicles including the A7, A8, Q8 and A6. The problems with not detecting the key, door unlocking, how the recall was handled, seat memory are not EV specific, and not early adopter issues as the A8 has the same functions and was shipping more than 1 year ago. The counter intuitive nature of disconnecting the charger from the car is something that can be learned, which I have, but it shouldn't be counter intuitive on a $90K vehicle. It's not the waiting time to disconnect, but the unnaturally long time you need to press the button to cause a disconnect. Electrify America being the result of the Diesel Settlement isn't the problem. It's great VW Group has to build it. The complaint was that the locations are not ideal for the eTron customer base as they are deliberately targeted at undeserved areas. I use EVGO chargers, and Chargepoint at work. I didn't mention the car ap, as I don't plan to pay the annual fee to keep the car connected as I don't think it's worth it, and the application is by most standards not that good. Audi seems too have protected themselves on the battery on an abundance of caution given recent lawsuits and legal fees. One petal driving is not exclusive from coasting. One can coast with the correct pressure on the gas petal. Hence the point, that moving ones foot from the gas petal to the brake loses time, that could otherwise be spend regenerating the battery sooner, and shaves off some use of the brake. Compare the in-city KWH/Mile between an eTron and a Model X, and the inefficiencies of the design -- be it one petal driving, or overall design are evident. The eTron is simply many years behind Tesla in EV efficiency. BMW was far ahead with the i3, until they threw it away by not advancing the platform causing the original designers to leave BMW for other companies. The lesson for me here is that Tesla has a serious competitive advantage for EV efficiency in terms of many years, and Audi is playing catchup. As for the UI screeen showing remaining range in red is simply poor UI design. The phone UI is colored blue, and navigation is green. Why not make the range green, and the phone UI red? The point here is that had Audi thought through the vehicle holistically they would not choose to color remaining range in a color used for stop, warnings, or alerts in the automotive industry. I appreciate your lengthy comments and thoughtful reply.

Dang, his experience sucked, stop bootlicking Audi, everyone should know you never buy a German car you always lease. Only the ignorant and bootlickers actually purchase a German vehicle, these cars aren't meant for the used market, they are worthless once the warranty runs dry, not supplemental, original factory warranty or you're gambling by keeping one past the warranty. Just lease a Tesla, the market will catch up eventually and Tesla won't be an option but don't buy one lease one

all German car gear shifters are forward to go backwards and backwards to go forward.. BMW, Mercedes all the German cars I own do that. the door issue is the same, it is a 2 pull open, same with the hoods. most of this stuff sounds like you have not owned a German or European car before. the other stuff is normal on early production car issues, that is why you never buy a car till it been on the market 6 to 8 months.

I thought the same thing. I had a BMW that was forward to go into reverse. A Mercedes that you go “up” to go in reverse. And, correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Tesla use the Mercedes shifter for years? I keep trying to find videos forums discussing mechanical failures for the E-Tron but everything is superficial and often a problem with charging networks which is apt to be a problem as our infrastructure grows.

We have had an etron for over 3 years, and I can say the car is built very well and really feels like a tank driving down the road. It feels tough and it still drives like a new car after 3 years and 25,000 miles driving mostly on Boston roads. Although relatively free of 'real' mechanical issues, there are some electronic annoyances. The doors not unlocking properly is one of my main issues with it. The infotainment glitches out on occassion, which seems to happen with most cars these days to some extent, especially those with wireless Carplay. We are now having a sensor issue so are getting the error messages about the Audi presence not being functional and need to take it in to dealer. No real issues with the charger, however, they did have to replace the charger during a recall and there are apparently issues with some of the etrons catching on fire when charged over a certain level. One wonders if Audi should do more to compensate owners rather than just telling them not to charge the car fully. Overall it is a pretty amazing vehicle that has lived up to expectations. The range in the winter is especially impressive; I think the car only loses about 10% of its range in 30F weather, which is way less than a Tesla. The fast charging works like a charm if you can find the right charger. It doesn't seem to have lost any of it's battery capacity yet. I would like to note that gear selectors on autos have had the driving modes at the bottom of the stack ('backwards') since the beginning of time, this is not unique to Audi.

I didn't choose Tesla cause Tesla refuse to allow 3rd party companies to recycle their cars cheaply, and they refuse to allow customers to know the repair history of a preowned car. Regarding the issue with the charger being difficult to unplug, I have a plug-in Volvo hybrid XC60 and the charger automatically locks onto the side of the car to prevent vandals from unplugging or stealing the charger. You have to unlock the car doors and then you can unplug the charger for about 30 seconds and then the charger automatically relocks to the car. Then you have to lock and unlock the doors to again unlock the charger. This is not a flaw, this is by design. Hopefully this helps some of you experiencing this issue. Also, my Volvo has also shown the key not found message on the dash while driving several times. I believe it's because the battery in the key fob is weak. I have not experienced any issues with the vehicle turning off or not operating properly when this message is displayed.

A few comments suggest that author is whining or making this stuff up. I guess whether or not he's whining is a matter of opinion (I don't think he is), but he's definitely not making anything up. I bought an etron 3 months ago and have experienced exactly the same issues! ALL OF THEM! I'm happy to hear it's not just my car. I hate how the seat doesn't always snap into position after I get in. I hate how it's not easy to unhook the charger. I hate how very occasionally the car has accused me of not having my key when it was always in my pocket or in the center console. I hate how the doors don't reliably open. My family has been frustrated when they can't get out! It's nuts that they can't open the doors! Additionally, I have my own issues I would like to whine about! My biggest is that the car doesn't reliably connect to my phone. Neither the MMI "normal" bluetooth or the wireless CarPlay interface connects reliably. I'd guess it connects about half the time and the other half I have go back and forth trying to force a connection via various means. This is maddening. It's amazing that I don't have to plug my phone into the car but awful that it only works half the time. I have a fully updated Iphone X so I don't blame my phone. It seems to me that all the issue that this video discusses and the issues that I've seen could be addressed with software fixes. I know software is hard, but c'mon Audi - can't you release an update? Other commenters suggest getting a Tesla S/3/X and to that I say, whatever. The Model X is super ugly and all the Teslas are like graduate research projects compared to the luxury of the etron. Just sit in an etron side by side with any Tesla and you'll immediately see the difference. The etron is a true luxury car. The Teslas are EVs. In general, I love my etron and all the stuff the author mentions and the stuff I've experienced grinds on me too but maybe less than the author because I don't have an 80 mile daily commute. I'd recommend the etron but I'm also looking forward to see how the EV market improves over the next few years. That is why I leased! Author: I live on the peninsula - if you need another corroborator, I'd be happy to help. How do we get an audience with the Audi guys responsible for their software? Certainly the dealer will be of no help.

Hopefully not, and it should be covered by the safety concept for the vehicle; however I have experienced how each department fulfills their vehicle functions individually which can cause the whole product to come together in less optimal ways than if departments worked together to optimize the product. The important aspect of this is that the vehicle should not be losing communication with they key at all, which suggests the key is poorly designed for the US market. I have never experienced this in any other vehicle.

I took delivery of a 2022 Audi eTron in May 2022. I have not experienced the issues you demonstrated. If I firmly press the charge door button it opens reliably. If I press it lightly as you appear to do then it does not open. That may be a good thing. The only thing that was similar is pulling the door handle sometimes does not open the door on first attempt but works on 2nd or 3rd attempt.. I like using the paddles on the steering wheel to control regenerative braking. I do not see why 1 pedal driving on the Tesla is a better solution. As long as these features work reliably then its a matter of user preference. Perhaps the issues you bring up in the video have been resolved in the later models. I test drove a Tesla Y in 2021. The Audi has a much better suspension which was a major factor in my selection process.

But you are the first user (except for the automotive journalist's) that have experienced problems with the car. The charging issue is something I have seen mentioned in one review, and that is a problem and annoying. The other issues you mention such as the car not recognizing your key, automatic seat memory, lack of proper super charging infrastructure, misleading mileage and or battery range, and not a sufficient ability to use rengerative braking are disappointing. On the other hand, this is the first generation e-tron and there are obviously bugs that Audi still has to work out and fix. But this is disappointing news for a car that looks so amazing and appears on the surface to be the perfect family luxury EV to challenge Tesla. Apparantly not. Yet.

I was thinking *exactly* the same -- a family luxury EV to challenge Tesla. Unfortunately it is not a Tesla challenger. 2.3 miles per KWH continues to be a soar disappointment. It's a luxury SUV, but an average electric car. If we were to purchase our third EV, it would be hard not to choose Tesla at this point.

This review is purely based on some frustration you don't want to drive e-Tron. I agree with other reviewer here, your background music is annoying and it sounds like you are about to sing about your review in this video, who puts a background music and speak dude. Have you seen or driven Tesla the build quality is horrible, e-Tron build quality is fantastic, Tesla everything happens on the screen and e-Tron you have buttons everywhere and comfortable. Features are top notch, Tesla seats are made of vegan leather, Audi is made with high quality leather. You are talking about Audi which is German model and not something China made like Tesla.

You press forwards to go backwards and press backwards to go forwards! Just imagine if you had a manual vehicle where you have to pull the gear stick back from 1st down into second to go faster, would that confuse you? Would you whine about that?

You have to read the manual before complaining. Our Cayenne S which we had for 10 years had the same door handle where it would not open on the first pull. It is designed that way. I only drove that maybel 30 times so I would forget as I was driving my S4, A6 and 911 mainly.

Less than 4 minutes in and it's clear that the gentleman who created this video is attempting to make a mountain out of less than a molehill as well as having a rather incomplete misunderstanding of how things work on his e-tron. First, it's painful watching him stab at the charging door release button while almost simultaneously attempting to yank the connector out of the charging port. Pressing the release, waiting a beat or two for the locking mechanism to disengage and then disconnecting the cable works every time for me. Likewise, pulling the interior door handle while at the same time jamming his shoulder against the door is not the way someone with any mechanical sensibilities opens a vehicle door. We have had zero problems opening or closing the doors. Also, his comments about operation of the shifter just come across as whining. Even someone unfamiliar with the drive/reverse directions of the shift handle should be able to adapt quickly. If one just can't, buy a different car. FWIW, Audi's sister manufacturer Porsche uses a logically similar system in their superlative PDK gearbox. In the Porsche road (and racing) gearbox manual upshifts using the console lever occur when the lever is pulled back and downshifts when pushed forward. As a Porsche owner, pulling back on the lever to go forward is completely natural. With regard to regenerative braking, I suppose it's a matter of preference but IMHO the way Audi handles it is far superior to the heavy regen braking in the BMW i3 we owned previously. Having the ability to coast when desired, to manipulate the paddles to increase regen in stages when that's appropriate, and having the auto regen feature take over as a backup is much more to my liking as an involved driver.

To bad you didn’t read the manual. Any center mounted shifter you go move it forward to go into reverse. If you push on the drivers door as you open it you would have no problem. The doors have an electric opener. Change the battery in the key fob. All you have to do is press the door opener for 2 seconds to release the charge cable. It’s advertised as 2.3 , you are unreasonable and unrealistic!!

Thumbs down all around on this vid for people considering the used market for the e-tron in late 2023 / soon to be early 2024. My recco is to not use this video in any way to make an e-tron buy / not buy decision. Especially now that these cars are selling at half off or more from original MSRP. Why? The video offers a four-year-old perspective, maybe ok for the day but is full of personal nits (fine) and not true problems with the design nor car quality. Plus, the recall waves have come and gone so major problems *should have been addressed by now*. That said, the forward backward gear design got me, too, as well as the need to push the external e-tron button to get the charger to disconnect ;); but both of these are one-time issues, once known forget about it forever more. Watch this vid for a better review (as in higher quality information) :kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6DWeY2Df7tnnbcsi=M7L9_-ztI19ygaKZ or this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pX6Yh2mJoJWBqrMsi=O08PuIk0C6UBLeMg "It's like driving around in a bank vault" "we're driving around on studded tires!?, I can't hear a hint of road noise" p.s. music was super annoying.

The charger being stuck and the doors responding slow are both fixed already with. Gear shift to D is backwards for almost all vehicles. Honestly everything you are complaining about is whining except one thing; the range is pathetic for a company that has Vorsprung durch Technik as a slogan. Btw; I have a Tesla and virtually everything in the interior has come off already or stopped working or tears really quickly,. The car has been returned to the dealer 13 times already for software issues, bad sensors, camera hardware issues and more. In Europe the Tesla charging network is no longer better than the Ionity network from VW, Mercedes, BMW, etc. I am personally really fed up with my Tesla due to its many issues but I am skipping the etron and am waiting for the BMW IX3, mostly because of range. (I actually love the Audi interior I have to admit...

Many thanks to the points of view from real user. I suggest there's different thoughts are based on how Audi makes this e-tron, the very first pure electrical vehicle in the brand. The major idea is to help traditional drivers "transfer" to the next generation; therefore, they start their ideas from current cars, instead of electrical cars. Indeed, there are still disadvantages to be improved, but it's still a phenomenal vehicle.

I agree AUDI is trying to help traditional drivers "transfer" to an electric vehicle. However many of the problems I mentioned are unrelated to an electric vehicle. The others which are related to an EV, like one-petal driving could be addressed by a SW update, except for the 2.3 Miles / KWH which is not great. Yes, many things about this vehicle are great, but there is this list of issues to be improved.

It's typical problem with e-tron. In most of cases, the problem is with impermeability of the car. Water gets inside, from the roof goes all the way down to the car's electrical center. So, after you encounter electrical issues. You can find lots of videos on the net about such problems.
