he had a history with schneizel and actually knew and strategized against him. mao isnt very smart and is extremely emotionally reactive, so he just had to leave space for mao to think he was actually talking to him and then he implied he banged c.c. only because he knew it would piss him off. mao wasnt someone he needed to predict a conversation for, he could be reasonably guided simply through how dumb and emotional he was.

This attempt against Mao is a lil bit sloppy because Mao is an erratic mf, so whether Mao interrupts Lelouch or vice versa, it wouldn't ring a bell to Mao. Schneizel is different, however Lelouch exploits what makes Schneizel such a fearsome persuader: his tendency to LISTEN. You see, Lelouch took an active role in their conversation, while Schneizel only responded. By anticipating Schneizel basic nature (of only play a game that he cannot), Lelouch can always craft some reasonable argument (even if it doesn't match the flow of the conversation) and expect Schneizel to follow it up instead of interrupting, making the conversation all the more "believable".

Mao was likely another part of the Geass Order's experiments, and her leaving Mao was around the same time that she left the order (knowing that what was being done wasn't right.) As much as CC probably wanted to take Mao with her (we know she did care for him,) it was an impossibility because of the degree of torment being out in public brings him.

To be honest, granted there should be an understanding for Mao's motivation given he lost the only person that cared about him, BUT If HE ever cared about her he would NEVER have SHOT HER MULTIPLE TIMES RIGHT AT HER JOINTS AND ALMOST HACK HER IN PIECES WITH A CHAINSAW! The cops awakened after the order was complete and just stood there, realized they all had blackouts and "woke up" to a dead guy with a chainsaw while they were all in riot gear and no questions were asked? no crime scene investigation was made? because im pretty sure they would've found out there was also blood from CC there, not just maos, how did that shit not blow up in the news? Detective Conan would've busted lelouchs ass after that incident. But yes, we all know, the power of bending the plot in favor of the MC is a pathway to many things some would consider unimmersive.

C.C. probably wouldn't be in many databases since she was imprisoned by Clovis (and was kept pretty hush-hush). For the crime scene they would have Mao's breaking and entering... and thats about it + a mystery's persons blood. I also don't know if the police would have been very open about the case, since it would be pretty embarrassing for them to admit that they shot a man without having any memory of what had transpired...

It's actually more sad that Mao sees C.C. in a romantic way most likely while C.C. saw him as a son her abandoning him really messed him up, hell given the real life nature of Geass aka Geas if you break the vow and oath of it you are cursed with dishonor or death. Let's say the permanent rogue Geass as a consequence of you defying your heart given Mao's Geass is a power to read minds there's a chance Mao had adopted parents and Mao wanted to know what they thought of him, and perhaps since he was a kid with this power there could've been a chance he didn't want to see the truth of humanity anymore as it broke and the Geass remained permanent and went rogue and it tormented him. I'm willing to believe C.C. promised him IF he manages to fulfill her wish his Geass would go away and he'd be free from the curse of reading minds forever, then he learns the truth to be free from his curse he must kill C.C. and he couldn't bare the thought of doing that so seeing how much pressure she put on an innocent kid C.C. leaves him. Big mistake given how he turns out. Oh can you imagine how messed up it be if Mao succeeded in chopping C.C. up thinking she wouldn't die if he didn't have the intent only to actually kill her and take her code in the process.

If I was Lelouch I would've just gotten C2 to gain his trust and make him an ally because he would've been so useful, someone who can read minds, he could gain trust in the britannia ranks and be a member amongst the enemies while relaying information he extracts from their minds to always be one step ahead and even counter his brother schnizal easily or maybe his father better.

The irony is if a person with a Geass kills the Code-bearer who empowered them, the Code-bearer dies, passing the Code onto the killer. So, Mao would have lost his mind-reading powers, but at the cost of the one and only woman he ever loved. As a Code-bearer, he'd have to live with that forever, as he knew nothing about how Code worked, or how to end his new immortality.
