Today’s video is a mapcrunching video. This week, I focused on a complex architectural scene full of juicy details like archways, turrets, statues and balustrades. The challenge, for me, was to edit down the complexity and only draw the parts that delight me. Even with my background in architecture, I found this exercise to be brain-stretching. I redesigned portions of the buildings to achieve greater simplicity. I did not omit any statues; those are awesome.

Thank you for clicking on this description! I still feel very much like a beginner in “content creation,” even though my channel has gone from 377 to more than 1600 subscribers since my last video. For my part, it is still very exciting just to imagine that any people at all watch my videos. I do a metaphoric backflip for each new subscriber. Just imagine how the last week has been; I’m downright dizzy from all of that metaphoric backflipping! At the moment I uploaded this video, my subscriber count was 1600.
All music is from the youtube audio library.
There are amazon affiliate links sprinkled around in here. These are items that I have found to bring joy to my life and I hope they do the same for you. If you click on the link and actually buy something (anything!) from amazon, I will receive a small commission at no extra cost to you - and that helps to support this channel.

What I used in this video:
Stabilo pencil: amzn.to/43gAVp2
Caran d’Ache watercolor pencils: amzn.to/3N7DmVp
Winsor & Newton Texture Medium: amzn.to/43dXPxp
Uniball Vision Micro Pens: amzn.to/3CkAMou
Roll of tracing paper: amzn.to/42zgN0d
Caran d’Ache neocolor 2 crayons: amzn.to/42AY4kG
Liquitex Acrylic Marker: amzn.to/3Nmy3Br
---
Favorite supplies that usually appear in my videos:
1. A porcelain plate or tray from the goodwill makes a great palette. So does a plastic lid from a yogurt container.
2. A used talenti ice cream cup is perfect for swish water; also a great way to buy art supplies when you “have to” eat the contents first.
3. A cheap Robert Simmons Expressions brush is perfect. The one I’m using here is an E85 Round, size 12. You can buy one at Blick Art.
4. I use a glass bottle that used to contain facial toner for my spray bottle. The toner was expensive, but it has a very pretty label. The spray is a fine mist and the bottle is the perfect size for using at home and also for taking out on location.
Some of my favorite art books:
Breaking the Rules of Watercolor by Shirley Trevena: amzn.to/3IoJLZL
Taking Risks With Watercolor by Shirley Trevena: amzn.to/3SMqCV8
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards: amzn.to/3kIwiDd
-----
What I use to film and edit my videos:
Small, flexible tripod with screw-on grippy attachment that holds my GoPro: amzn.to/3mEEGUU
Desk mount device that I use with the screw-on grippy attachment that came with my tripod - the desk mount (in combination with the grippy attachment) holds my GoPro 18-inches above my table: amzn.to/3L81XbK
Blue yeti microphone: amzn.to/3Fw1IE7
Lightning to USB Camera Adaptor - this is what I use to connect the blue yeti microphone to my ipad for voice over editing: amzn.to/3ZNxuUE
GoPro Hero10: amzn.to/3TFnvyU
It takes some getting used to, but for filming on hikes it is much better than using my iPhone.

Thank you for your kind comments! :-) I love that purple there, too… it makes me wonder how I could push the colors even further into the imaginary realm.

Gosh you are a genius! And Ingenius! Adding that other arch - Oo you clever thing 🥰 but I think I’ll pass on architecture for the moment thank you. did you notice how beautifully Shirley Trevena your palette tray was at one point😀 I’m thinking some of the granulation fluid might be a nice addition to my growing art supplies though. Oh, and I watched your first video of your family on a hiking trip. I saw that the comments were switched off, so I hope I’m not overstepping the mark if I tell you how lovely it was to watch you all and see the area where you live. Take care.

I really love your process description. It's helpful. Thankyou. I love to draw architecture but struggle a lot. Simplifying is a good idea.

Hi Julie! Thank you for your kind comments! :-) I think many, many people struggle with drawing buildings. As I figure out what direction to go with this very new youtube channel, I think leaning into drawing and painting buildings and architecture would be good since I can draw on all of that experience in my first career. :-)

Developing a personal color palette is an education in itself, as is choosing different brands of paint. I like your color and technique processes in your videos; I always learn something new. Thank you.

Hi Peggy! Oh my gosh, for sure. Although I’ve noticed that over time, artists tend to shift their palettes. There are even some who have a palette for each season. Thanks always for your kind comments. You know, I now think of you as one of my “originals” - that is, one of the

@@klwebuga Being somewhat new to the medium (working previously in acrylics) I'm still in the R&D phase of my education and am having a blast. As with most of life's endeavors watercolor is easy enough to do but very hard to do well and consistently, and I can certainly understand the shifting of palettes over time and seasons. For the most part I've settled on a palette (for now) and make good use of a couple of items you've used; Artgraf chalk has been a game changer for my style of painting and yogurt lids are the perfect palette extenders - thanks. Finally, congratulations on the big increase in subscribers - I'm honored to be among your 'originals'. Happy painting!

Just discovered this channel. Fantastic work. I’m not a beginner, usually work in gouache, but mostly am trying to expand my color palette to be less “sky blue, grass green” oriented. I love these colors and your originality in modifying and changing elements around. I look forward to exploring map crunch.

Thank you for your kind comments! :-) I’ve spent some time with gouache paints, too - I love the smooth matte finish and the freedom to *not* worry about maintaining the white of the paper.

Your overall footnoting of your work, colors, pens, crayons, etc., is in itself artwork, “cartouche-like,” the arches are most cartouche-like, that shape. Distinguishing as you did between the two different paintings was interesting, and I agree. Your architect skills certainly were foremost. The twists in your style, drawing, sticks, pencils, crayons(maybe not the right word), paint, and various marking pens, your art soup, is quite outside conventions of watercolor, from my point of view. As interesting as your work is, I myself would be reluctant to go out and grab all the stuff you use. Whatever! But I still admire your work. You always provide something to learn. And by the way, what’s with the goat?!
@klwebuga
@klwebuga Жыл бұрын
Hi Larry, I can count on you for thoughtful comments! :-) Thank you. The goat came about because, as I started to describe the parts of the building, all of the vocabulary from an architecture history class I took >20 years ago started tumbling into my brain. I wanted to make sure I was remembering the words correctly before I filmed - so I looked them up. On Britannia.com, if you search “frieze,” you’ll see this image. The image captured me and I captured it back right away! :-) It was carved into a frieze and it’s special name is, “bucranium.” I love that. Also, BTW, thank you for the new vocabulary word for my day today: cartouche! :-)

Would it be possible for you to demonstrate in more detail how you take the map image and transform it into the drawing; explaining what you choose to keep and remove and why? I have no skills and would love to paint city scenes but don't know how to simplify.

Thank you for this comment! It’s so helpful to me to hear this and YES, for sure, I can absolutely expand upon how I think about what to keep and why. Your comment has given me a couple of ideas of processes / techniques to show that I think will be really helpful. The ideas are on my list for upcoming videos.

New to your channel. Looks great! In map crunch.. I can rotate etc but can't figure out how to - in effect - back up to include more of the view without skewing it. Help?
@klwebuga
@klwebuga Жыл бұрын
The thing to remember about mapcrunch is that the images come from google street view… and therefore from those cars that drive around with the ball camera on top. So we can’t back up to see the scene better - just front and back like a car. Sometimes you can take the address into google street view and see if some other imagery is available, though.

When you paint from an image from mapcrunch, do you keep it visible on your computer or can you print it ?

What is mapcrunching? I just came across your enjoyable video, but am confused. Towards the end, you mention something like newcolors 'crayons' but I can't understand what you say or read what they are, they are constantly moving. Guess I will do some online searching to figure this out. I do enjoy watching your painting develop.
