Alan Arkin was such a sweet man. During the scene with Abigail where she cries in the hotel room, he immediately yelled cut concerned about her, until she explained that she was acting, which cracked him up. He made certain that during the scene in the van where he used the colorful language, that Abigail's headphones were turned up so she couldn't hear and would check before each take. At the world premiere, he asked her mother to take her out of the theater at that scene as well.

and why? because a family member needed help.
@sassytabasco Жыл бұрын
YES! Frank's one of my favorite movie characters, and it's partly because of that scene. He loses everything, but realizes that meaning isn't something you can measure and give a trophy, but something that he can give to himself. That man was ready to die just days earlier, and now he's sprinting as fast as he can for something that is ultimately trivial. Because it would mean something to someone he cares about. Such a beautiful moment.

When grandpa said he was proud of Richard while they were in the van I think Richard initially thought he was teasing him. Either that or he simply did not know how to respond so he kind of shrugs his father off, but then he realizes that he was being sincere and they embrace each other with a simple but obviously heartfelt handshake. This has always led me to believe that Richard was not frequently patted on the back as a child nor was he showed much affection by his father.

There's a talk by the screenwriter where he mentions his inspiration for making this flick--especially regarding the Richard character--is he heard a speech Arnold Schwarzenegger gave to some high school students where he said something about loving winners and hating losers. The writer thought that was an awful perspective, saw where self-help was going, and wrote the Richard character to be the worst embodiment of this obsession with winning... and the script went from there.

The father was struggling the entire time, you just misseed it at the beginning because the manifestation of his issues was projected (and let's be honest, maybe a bit of bias). He was terrified that he was a failure to himself and his family, and he took that fear out on others (it makes more sense when you realize that everything he was saying to others was what he actually thought/feared about himself). He was not a bad person, he was just damaged. That is not to excuse his behavior (he was 100% objectively wrong and people are still accountable for what they put into the world), but it was never out of malice.

Was probably one of the last good memories I had with them, kinda makes me happy and sad. Not sure if I want to rewatch it again or not.

I'm not surprised that the bad stuff didn't register with Maple, if she was viewing it through the eyes of Olive. As in the scene where Olive asks the grownups what they were talking about and grandpa says "politics", I think a lot of the details of the families disfunctions, didn't totally register with her. It was grownup stuff that went over her head, not to say that it didn't still effect her in other ways.
