In all fairness, Steam would be hard pressed to make a Portal 3 that isn't in an alt universe or a prequel, as the end of Portal 2 sorta wrapped everything up in a nice bow. Something like this, but much longer, would be awesome - doesn't even need to be Portal, anything Aperture would be amazing.

@@gominho9424 The lead writer (I think) said it's not canon in a somewhat vague reply to an E-Mail asking whether or not it is canon. The problem with this whole situation is, that the game's Steam page says it's canon. Also it doesn't fit into the lore without retconning some bits (mostly dates tho) but the portal series is full of retcons anyway so that's honestly not the strongest argument. Also also, people seem to have a problem with the idea of Cave still being somewhere in Aperture and GLaDOS being alive at the same time, even tho it would make sense, considering Cave was believed dead after crashing down into gen-1 Aperture, so the company needed a new CEO and a new brain-mapped AI.

@@insert-joke-name the half life writers have been famously inconsistent on questions about canon. when asked if opposing force was canon, mark Laidlaw insisted there is no canon. however other times he seemed to indicate that specific events from the gearbox expansions may not be "official" parts of the half life story. desk jobs plot matches elements from the scrapped game that was replaced by portal 2. I think this is every bit as canon as portal 2

I knew you would like this. Highly suggest maybe playing the Aperture themed VR games like The Lab and Aperture Hand Labs. Plenty of classic Portal-esque humor there too. Also good training for VR if you're not used to it, may help before jumping into Half Life Alyx. Also, fun fact! This game recycles a cut concept from Portal 2. In one of the early drafts of the story, when Chell & GLaDOS (in a potato) were in down in the condemned testing areas, they would come across Cave Johnson in a computer. This computer was only a small box, about the size of a weighted storage cube. GLaDOS and Cave would talk to each other. In the dialogue Cave would provide some story exposition, revealing GLaDOS is Caroline (as opposed to how GLaDOS figures it out herself in the game). Cave would then ask for you end his suffering. Chell would unplug his computer, letting him die. You would then need to take the cube computer to solve a test chamber ahead. Ultimately this was scraped. I was amazed to see that they re-used the Cave in a Computer concept.

The modern Source engine looks really nice. It's such a shame Portal 3 didn't receive greenlight. AAA comedy physics puzzler is a perfect showcase and opportunity to further improve the engine and hone dev skills - it's not like Valve is releasing a handful of games every year, they start a lot of projects but finish and release very, very few. Also there are, relatively, much fewer expectations about P3 than there would be about HL3. Portal 3, Team Fortress 3 and some teaser HL3 experience- 'Orange Box 2' from the dreams...

there's cut content from portal 2 where you would have actually found Cave Johnson as an AI while exploring the abandoned aperture facility and he would have revealed more lore and begged the player and glados to unplug him. the voice lines exist in the files still but the rest was cut, and much for the better i think, finding out about Caroline the way we did was much more engaging than have Cave-in-a-box be like "yeah, you were my assistant and i volunteered you to go first". so this is both an alternate universe and a nice nod to that dropped content concept. so instead of cave volunteering caroline to be AI'd first to make sure the process was safe for himself to go through like the cut story, it's assumed that he passed before they could figure out the process and caroline became the AI in time, whether willingly or unwillingly is still a question given the whole wanting to murder everyone who made her the moment she woke up as glados thing and cave's "make her do it" line. given wheatley's madness when hooked up to the system, the murdery bits seem likely more a flaw in the system itself than entirely in glados though.

You should also consider the Portal Stories Mel and Aperture Tag mods, they're the only mods worth playing - story wise, and they fit in pretty neatly with the stories. If I recall correctly, valve even gave one of them the right to sell the mod on steam. Note the "sell" part.

everyone is constantly recommending super popular portal content like portal stories mel and reloaded. good content, but there's more than just those two mods, as it happens. "portal pro" and "rexaura" are the first that comes to mind for me, and there are also some good workshop map series like "the lone future starter" and the more well-known "12 angry tests". i should stop myself before i recommend every piece of good content under the sun, considering you probably don't have all the time in the world...

Valve are just the biggest tease. This game is in so many ways just the neatest product ever, but why couldn’t they just make the next full blown Portal title instead. I respect them for advancing gaming technology, but man their development cycles are frustrating. I wish they’d just stick with whatever new technology they’ve debuted, for a while, and make like a bunch of games with it, and in the mean time they can think of the next thing to do tech wise. And yeah I’m pretty sure they’ve used Source 2 as an engine. Ain’t it beautiful?! Mate, Half Life: Alyx is gonna be a blast for you!

Well, you could say that this is all canon, but since the multiverse thing everything's canon, because there are an infinite number of multiverses with every story you could make. But is this canon of the main line? It's a very crazy story indeed. I think they also made this multiverse thing canon, so that they are free to do whatever story they like, because it doesn't have to make too much sense for the main line.

Hi mapo, i discovered you in midst of your halflife 2 playthrough and got hooked on your blind playthroughs. I like how interested in the worlds you get and i think i know of a perfect game you would enjoy to fill your exploration needs. The game is Outer Wilds, you play as a non human character in space that starts of to his first mission as an astronaut. there are no objective markers or anything like that. you must find your own path and explore the solar system your in. It has a beautifull story hidden in its world to explore. i cant say much more because the game gets better the less you know about it. spoilers would litterly break the game.

If you want a challenge for your brain and thinking with portals, you can try the mod Portal Reloaded. It's free and extremely well made. It adds a third portal that connects two places in time, so you basically have two versions of the same test chamber but the portals you create in the past stay in the present, but portals created in the present won't affect the portals in the past. It's a really interesting concept and it works super well.
