The fact that Grady could be a prototype design for the personality spheres is really interesting. It's sort of meta in a way, because he actually resembles the cores from the first Portal, which in a way are technically early designs for the personality spheres until Valve stuck with the designs from Portal 2.
@proctifer9833

I think that part where he talks about the tattoo being a metaphor for a person being inside the machine is alluding to the fact that all cores have people inside them. A freaky concept to think that every core (theoretically) is some person that they downloaded and edited to become a core.

Things I noticed from my playthrough you didn't note: * HL2 style ammo boxes in the beginning. * Saying your name works, you probably have the wrong mic set as Windows default maybe? Or something else. * Gyro controls work using Steam Controller, as one would expect. * L4 and R4 (back buttons) on Steam Controller activate the rockets. * You can shoot Cave before he finishes his first monologue. He gets mad at you for interrupting him before resuming his normal speech.

I find it interesting that they are touching more on the history of the lore. Details that weren't there before. There wasn't a lot when it came to the history of this place but considering that it's Valve, Portal is also part of the Half-Life universe. The only question is, where does everything take place between Black Mesa and Aperture? There's no clear indication of the timelines connections. Half-Life has accurate dates and times to go based on but Aperture doesn't. There's also another facility related to Aperture but it's in Killing Floor.

Don't think Valve is teasing anything by reusing TF2 sounds. Most Valve projects reuse sounds from other games whether it's weapons, button presses, or just sound effects. It's just what Valve does. Even Dota 2 uses the AWP sound from CS and those two are definitely not the same universe.

It's just them reusing assets like they always do. For example you can find various games of theirs that use the same sounds for weapons in Counter Strike, L4D and TF2 (AK47, minigun, rocket launcher, etc). They do the same with their models, you can find a boat from L4D in CSGO, or some maps even use the same buildings (also CSGO and L4D). Most people don't notice and those who do will instead think it's Valve trying to make all their games happen in the same universe, wich would be cool but its not true. I could be wrong and you right, but it's the most possible answer that they just like reusing assets, its boring but they aren't the first or the last game devs that do it.

So it gave them consciousness? Does that mean they are also Cave now? In the vein of "everything in apperture is sentient" or are they their own thing.

Yes. HL3 is supposed to be about the borealis, about stuff aperture worked on. They are in the same universe. Portal 3 would literally be the same game as Half-Life 3, without a doubt. GLaDOS knows what's up there, she wouldn't do it if she just wanted her gone, the combine would immediately take her in. She knew what she was doing. She still wants Chell dead. GLaDOS will stay down there doing her tests, but Chell's story doesn't just end at that elevator.

Note that the reactor they built seemed to mimic Vortigaunt energy, and as it ripples over the turrets, causes them to mimic him. Could it be possible, that like the Vortessence, he is communicating with them telepathically or interweaving their consciousnesses? It is rather suspicious how the reactor looks similar to Vortigaunt powers. Plus, I have heard that Erik Wolpaw mentioned in Portal 2: The Official Guide, that mantis men may still live in the facility and could be a part of a theoretical Portal 3.

I don't know why people are calling the intelligent Mantis "mantis men". The Mantis Men were human test subjects injected with praying mantis DNA. It does seem now that the reason they thought to do that is that they found they had a colony of praying mantis to get the DNA from.

It's quite confusing as to when this is meant to be set. 70s aperture facility, including their logo, but Cave says he got sick a few years before, which was meant to happen in the 80s. The company is named Aperture Laboraties, a change that also happened in the 80s, and there's a personality sphere - which I was under the impression were part of the GLaDOS project. There was also the prototype central core chasis seen in an old area of 80s Aperture but the core and Cave here don't line up with that in the timeline so it's unclear if this is all part of the GLaDOS project or not. There's also the weighted storage cubes with the usual design further implying it's the 80s.

Valve has all of their time and money on gambling right now. They gamble with new technologies and such, they are trying to make Linux gaming not only viable but preferable, and they make things like the Steam Machines, Steam Controller, Steam Link, Steam Deck, VR hardware, and more. Quite a few of these were failures and attempts to make something unique, some of these attempts are working and still in motion like Linux and Steam Deck, but it is still all a gamble and will indefinitely take up their time and further neglect their past, their franchises/series, and their old fans.
