In the 13th Century, some people made this world map, and it was rubbish. Were they bad at geography? Or is there an intriguing reason behind the map's odd shapes and images?

Looking it up online. One estimate for a 3000-mile trip (the approximate distance between London and ancient Babylon in Iraq, but conveniently the distance between NYC and LA) is about $17,000 (a couple did it for $5000 with an agreement). Add in an extra $4000 for the extra 500 miles, and maybe another $4000 for all the issues traveling across countries and into the Middle East. $25K seems reasonable. Just make sure to stop by the Turkish Embassy to give them a heads up. And, maybe get a deal with the UK government to allow you to visit Iraq. So another $20K to them and maybe $40K for publicity to follow you.

That is absolutely NOT ptolemy's map. That is known as the "Admiral's map" and it's from 1541. The mistake comes from the fact it was shown in a compendium/translation of Ptolemy's works that included other annotations, from the 1500s. This map was an annotation, not original work from 100AD.

Don't know if it's been mentioned in the comments already but the bearded figure with mixed genitalia, a turban and a single breast is probably mythical figure Tiresias who slapped a pair of snakes and got turned into a woman for 7 years. Tiresias also became clairvoyant after being blinded by Juno for taking Zeus's side in an argument they were having about whether men or women have the better end of sex, asking Tiresias to settle the argument because he had experience living as both.

Im curious as to whether or not their story was told as a punishment in the time when such gods were actually worshipped. Its quite common, sadly, in Greek and Roman myth to find the stories corrupted by christian influences so as to tell a skewed portion of the myths to support the christian narrative better. They did the same thing to Nordic myths to the pt where one of the primary oldest historical records of such myths... was written entirely by a christian priest who was statin what he believed their beliefs to be, but again, skewed to fit a certain narrative. Christian historians have done this time and time again when it comes to other myths and theres certain red flags for it; with a common one bein patriarchal overtones and punishment/retribution as primary motivators. So i instantly raise an eyebrow askew at the notion that this person was once a man but was punished by the gods to become like a woman... Esp given an intersex person born in such a time wudve been more likely to end up in priesthood rather than end up being treated like an outcast or otherwise like theyre being punished by their being between the binary sexes. Theres even other Greek and Roman myth figures who are intersex too, includin the major one im not gonna say the name of bcuz the H word derived from their name has become a slur for us intersex folks since then. They were however viewed by both the Greeks and Romans to be symbolic of the perfect union of man and woman; which even saw them associated with marriage as the physical embodiment of such (tho thats likely due to later christian influences and less to do with a tradition of connectin them to marriage). Both Dionysus and Priapus were likewise viewed as bein a union of both the binary sexes as well.
@SylviaRustyFae
@SylviaRustyFae 2 жыл бұрын
Lookin into the myth a bit, its not that he slapped a pair of snakes; he slapped a copulating pair of snakes, with a stick, which supposedly angered Hera. Red flag #2, associations with Hera/Juno and Snakes are often Christian influences. But it is at least in character that she wud defend a pair engaged in procreating, as prty much the mother goddess and the goddess of such relationships. So thats a toss up on whether it makes it seem more or less likely.

It's a map from 1522 by Lorenz Fries. It's mainly based on Ptolemy's map but you can see that it depicts America, Madagascar, Cape of Good Hope (link between Atlantic and Indian Oceans) and Pacific Ocean east of Asia, places that Ptolemy did not know existed. There are sadly no known survivng original maps by Ptolemy. www.bl.uk/learning/timeline/large126360.html is a copy from 1482, probably unaltered except for translation to Latin.

1:07 Can I ask what the landmasses on the far left side of the map are? They appear to be Brazil and Greenland, but that seems slightly unlikely, as I'm pretty sure Brazil was only officially discovered like 1400 years later, right? Super interesting that some Greek dude could draw that, it's interesting to think about, but I guess that means that some people from Greece (at least people that talked to Greece) sailed all around Africa, and Vietnam/Indonesia etc. super cool map.

@@JayForeman I appreciated this video and I actually like very much all the material that you have in your channel. I think however you should update either this video or at least its description to make it clearer that the "Ptolemy map" wasn't a Ptolemy map after all. Otherwise you can quite easily get some people very confused about history and I guess this is not want you want to achieve!

I bet the creators of Dark Souls 3 (videogame) have drawn much inspiration from this map. In the final dlc, the Ringed City, you are at the end of time, and the world is converging towards the Ringed City. All manner of places from previous areas and lands are jumbled up and compressed towards this single point, much so that the initial shape of the places had been lost and has changed into a big pile of architecture all leaning towards a single point. Much like the Mapa Mundi, where all continents have converged into a compressed disk of sorts that serves a greater purpose: the end of time! Pretty dope.

It's a map created by an artist named Laurent Fries to accompany a translated version of Ptolemy's "Geography" in the early 16th century (that's why you can see a little bit of the Americas, this was after the first colonies). I guess they got confused, didn't look close enough, and thought this was Ptolemy's map (although Ptolemy's original description of the world was apparently very impressive as well).

really, if 5 years ago someone told me that in the future one of the highlights of my day would be watching 2 reasonably full of shit Englishmen (not at the level of Jeremy Clarkson) talking about maps - I'd have doubted them or been on the lookout for future mental health issues and or head trauma. Well, I've suffered no significant brain damage anyway and I still find this channel (as well as Politics Unboringed) to be refreshing, informative and surprisingly entertaining. 1:10 This is a version from a 16th century publication by Martin Waldseemuller and Laurens Fries (alt spelling Lorenz Fries). This is post Portuguese/Spanish exploration. They did a few maps looking similar to this incorporating recent news and info about the Americas as well as southern navigational routes around Africa and India. Ptolmey did not know about South Africa, nor the western hemisphere continents. But his actual compass and straight edge maps were in fact impressive for the ancient world.
