Excellent review of Maquia. I've watched the show 5 times already and still gained new insight to the show from watching your video, which is a testament to the complexity and depth that the movie has. The writing and portrayal of the characters is just so extremely effective. A single scene of a particular character is enough to convey everything you need to know about their emotions, thoughts, and growth while still feeling completely natural, which allows so many ideas and concepts to be fully realized in a short span of 2 hours. Okada's best work thus far imo.

Thanks, I’m glad I was able to give you a new perspective. I think Maquia is one of those films that’s so personal that everybody takes away something slightly different from it. You’re right about the the characters too, I felt like I really knew them after just a couple of scenes. It’s amazing how much they all change over the course of the film but still feel consistent.

Maquia is a treasure I hold for myself, and one I'll gladly share to others. The trajectory the protagonist sets herself on as the child rearer of a human that she'll eventually be pushed into the position of being physically outgrown by said child. The final scene, which I won't spoil, is such a unique and interesting look into something not seen in this world.

It’s such a special film, I’m amazed at how much depth is packed into those 2 hours. Even in editing this, the ending had me welling up when I skimmed through it.

I wasn't ready what exactly awaited me when I watched it the first time and BOI DID IT HIT HOME. It tugged a personal note which I truly believe touches everyone who at any point had a falling out with their parental figure.

Oh boy, I've had a gorgeous song from this OST in my regular repeat of music, and I can't WAIT to see how it makes me cry in the movie itself.
