I would argue the MetaSpeed Sky would be a great option for 5-10k racing. For me, I did my pace at 620-6:30 and it just turned over so smoothly. I’m an 6’2, stride and forefoot runner. I want to try the + because it had more girth and midsole foam. Also pineapple with pepperoni or bacon, 🤤 QD: cake would be my choice…although my wife makes a great peanut butter and chocolate pie!

this is why I think it's important to watch different shoetubers, perspective. everyone is built different with different gaits. I always hold Seth's opinion in high regard but different shoes work better for different people. Also.. to my first responders, military, ect. Asics does a 40% discount so you can get these shoes heavily discounted if you qualify.

Personally, I really like an outsole with lots of rubber coverage. Even as a medium sized runner (5’6”, 110lb) I wear down the outsole a lot, and I haven’t been able to convince myself to get the Mach 4/Mach 5 because of it. I’ve shredded 3 endorphin speed outsoles, so I think maybe a lack of rubber can be a negative thing. Anyways, shoe battle idea: magic speed vs endorphin speed could be cool. Love the videos Seth!

Glad to see the evolution of Asics. My first pair of running shoes was the Kayano20. But for many years I steered clear of Asics, I was not happy with the Gel series of shoes. It was not till a couple years ago with all the buzz about Novablast that I finally gave in and to my surprise, there was no gel in the Novablast!!

Seth, to dial in on the scoring system, consider a weighting scheme where some categories (midsole, for example) carry more scoring weight vs. other categories (outsole, for example). And the weighting scheme is likely to be different for racing shoes vs. daily trainers.

Interesting thought Alex, and a valid idea, but I personally think scoring is a very difficult (and in some categories subjective) thing as made evident by the comments lately! I actually just prefer to hear about the shoes element by element, plus overall feeling when running in them, taking that as one opinion. I then take into account the unique biomechanical differences between all of us, and use several reviews to narrow down what I’m interested in. I see how upset people get about inconsistencies in scoring but some elements are so complex and individual (how a midsole feels, how that affects how drop feels, how much one can feel small differences in weight, how lockdown varies for different types of feet, and the list goes on and on….). Obviously different reviewers are partial to what works for them but sometimes there’s a pretty good consensus on some of the best shoes. Putting that together with what’s worked for me in the past really helps narrow down the huge field of options these days.

Awesome review. I literally use the new balance rebel V2 for everything! I wanna try one of these models out but having a hard time trying to figure it out which one to order. How would you compare the new edge2 to the old sky1 because they look exactly the same?? I like you am more of a cadence runner but wouldn’t mind trying either model! Of course there’s no way to try any of these models on in person so I wanna order the correct pair! I do feel like the v1 sky and the new edge 2 would probably be the best for me. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, thank you so much!!

Seth, the stack height you listed for Sky (original version) is incorrect. It is just the midsole. Adding the insole and outsole you would arrive 38/33 stack height. Your number for Sky+ includes the insole and outsole. So, the shoe has not gained much in stack but there is more foam under the foot because of wider width.

As of now i love the Metaspeed Sky 1 and the NB RC elite v2 . I also have the Adidas Adios Pro 2 but just does not work for me . Wanted to get the Edge + but might hold that off for the Saucony (in black) or NB SC elite (when that comes out) QD : Creme Brule Cake

But then I think, wait, I´ve had bad cake (too dry, lumpy, more frosting than cake, etc.), but I´ve never really had a bad pie. Sure, it´s never necessarily spectacular like cake "can" be, but pie is like home (heart). It´s never too high or low, it´s always what it´s supposed to be, and it´s always enough.

I ran 3min repeats at 10km race effort with Metaspeed Sky + and I absolutely loved the pop and ride it gives. So just interested why it’s a good choice for 21km and 42km but not 10km

you need to check when you run faster, if you increase your stride length or if you increase your cadence (usually people do both, so this concept can be a bit tricky to be honest)... my recommendation is more about finding the shoe you enjoy more based on your tastes than really guiding yourself by this cadence/stride thing...

What Bruno said. For example, I have personally have a cadence of 160-170 at 8:00 pace, but only up to 175-180 at 5:00 pace, pretty good evidence that I’m a stride runner

Whereas I, at 5’3”, only 101 lbs have always had a very high cadence from Day One-188-and while my stride increases a little when I increase my pace significantly, my cadence increases relatively more. In the end, you always need to try on shoes, get on the store TM or if they let you, run outside in them, and see what seems to feel better for your biomechanics. It’s an intriguing idea and the shoes are very different (I’ve run in them both and bought the Edge+ which theoretically would be the better choice for me)

If I want to save money, I go back and watch reviews (including comparison videos) of prior-year models. For example, I recently watched a bunch of Alphafly 1 reviews (including comparisons against the Next% 2 and other 2021 shoes) before I picked up a pair on sale.
