Love these videos. I've run quite a few half marathons and 5k and 10k, and on the long runs i usually finished quite sore, or sometimes in pain. After watching these i ran the SD half marathon yesterday without any injury or pain, reducing my overall time by about 20 minutes, and actually finished the last mile sprinting, thanks a lot for all your time on these videos.

"Honor the distance" is a nice quote to get a tattoo from it. "Fix your problems" is also a super nice advice.

“As in life, a marathon is too long for nothing to go wrong, both in the race itself and the process of getting to the starting line. WHEN things go wrong, do you have the experience, knowledge, resources, and attitude to deal, manage, or cope?” - loosely paraphrased and added onto Coach Nate’s amazing inspo nugget thrown in there at ~5:50 like it wasn’t awesome advice! 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Cue the mic drop!

I just completed my first half in Nashville this past weekend. I haven't run since Army Basic Training, and I have no idea how far we used to run then. But back then, 30 some odd years ago, I could run my two mile PT test in 10:30! At 51, I know I will never be that fast again. I started running this past January with the goal of doing the half as a celebration of losing over 110 pounds. Yeah, I let myself go. Still, old habits of being lazy lead to intermittent training, which lead to shin splints. My longest run was nearly eight miles three weeks prior to the main event. I didn't run any the entire time during my recovery, and ONLY after I got permission from my doctor to run. The day of my race, I was able to run the hills of Nashville for a full six miles before having to do interval running. From there, I ran out of gas at mile 10 and had to start walking. I tried running again, but my calves started knotting up bad, as well as the inside of my left knee. So, I walked three miles, but was determined to run the final tenth of a mile, and be running as I crossed over the finish. Today, two days later, I am a bundle of pain in both legs, and surprisingly, my biceps. I jokingly refer to it that I have lower body rigor mortis.... I was that stiff yesterday. After all that, I have signed up for a FULL marathon in December in Memphis, and another half in April 2020, back in Nashville. I would love to have more of a long-term program to prepare for the FULL and have more confidence in my ability to complete it than if I did it the same way I did to hastily prepare for this recent half. I wish to honor the distance.

loving these videos even tho I'm nowhere near a marathon yet. I'm new to running this year and am kinda stuck at 5k, everytime I try to extend my distance I either feel exhausted and like I'm just dragging myself around my run, or my feet and legs get really sore and I need more recovery time

Interval training at half the distance and speed training at a third of the distance should help. Cross training with strength training helps too.

I do strength training 3x a week full on training heavy and accessories and I’m joining track and field and right now we’re doing a 2 mile marathon yes that’s nothing honestly, but I wanna unlock my full potential I know I can run fast and keep it steady the problem is the shoes, I run faster and better in flat shoes, normal running shoes slow me doing. The problem is the ball of my feet start hurting after a minute of going full out

I do my training using just my body-weight. Although I am training for the distance but I have no trails to work with. Also since I live in the city, I have to obey the traffic lights. But I am willing to join the marathon. But prior to the post lockdown and NYC is finally rebuilding itself. I would like to join the 5k. Now that I recieved this tip I would like to do marathon myself or with group to 10k.

I absolutely love that you say fix the problem over bracing, taping or some other adaptive equipment. These items are a temporary fix and unless the issue is addressed, it will always be a weak area in your training.

You can DEFINITELY do this. With a good blend of running, strength training and mobility/injury prevention exercises, you'll succeed. We have a Marathon Training Program that has helped tons of people get through the finish line with much success! I'd suggest starting with our 30 Day Challenge program first though, to get acclimated to our training style and to safely get moving again. Feel free to take a look at these programs here: therunexperience.com/training-plans and email us with any questions!

You got this! Cross country will really help you with training - I was 15 when I did my first marathon in the middle of XC season. It helped when I did regular XC practice with the team and then did a second practice (swimming, core, biking, etc) for about an hour, a few hours before or after practice.

I run 40 miles per week. I speed train two times a week at 3 miles at 7 min pace and then rest at 8 min pace. Long run is usually 10-13 miles. Like you said time is such a hassle... cause of all the others things in life. So I’m scared to run a marathon and fail.

Swagata Bhattacharjee you should ask your doctor regarding the activities you’re allowed to do. A heart condition and a lung problem can both result to a breathing problem. I have asthma. Thank God, exercise does not trigger exacerbations in my case.

The biggest thing to know when training for your first marathon is that anyone can do it.... it doesnt matter your background or even your weight.... the biggest thing when working your first marathon is to remember that hydrating yourself as well as the participants is just as important. I made the mistake while in my first marathon by accidently handing one of the runners my coffee instead of the cup of water... that was bad... so never have a hot beverage in one hand while the runners are going by...... also use distilled water.. runners hate sparkling or flavored waters.. never kool aid either I found out... a runner in Chicago said I cost him the marathon by giving him kool aid.. im not so sure about that but lesson learned. either way enjoy your first marathon... they are super easy...like bartending at a wedding...... just hand out the water and then hopefully party with some other marathoners after the running thing is over. also you are probably going to get puked on if you work the finish line.
