With all due respect to Cohen and like minded people what’s happening to Palestinians has nothing to do with how the Jewish people have been treated throughout history. Israel has no right to treat people like they’ve been treating the Palestinians for decades.

Cohen is making it a religious thing when it’s about stealing homes & land that’s the real reason.. but because of the theft of homes & land the Muslims will use Islamic values by way of fisabalillah jihad to fight back & not bow to their oppression & cruelty as we Muslims only bow to Allah (swt). It’s not complicated but mr. Cohen is making it complicated. Anyway Zionism is a cancer like Nazism & it has no place in politics or on the earth & it needs to be abolished.

I'm disappointed in this debate. There were many points Cohen made which I think should have been pushed back on. I think if you do it again, he shouldn't be getting away with the nonsense he was spewing. He was shifty with demographics and invoked the myth of large Arab immigration into Palestine (no scholar accepts that), mentioned Jordan as part of the Mandate for Palestine a few times (it never was - it was added to the Mandate after Britain was tasked to form it after San Remo, and it was removed before it went into legal effect), he kept taking about Husseini to stress the jihadi element ( the nationalist delegates were Christians and Muslims, and the nationalist literature was mostly from Christians), he kept invoking the neo-lachrymose history of Jews in the Muslim world (dhimmi status ended in the Ottoman Empire and it wasn't invoked by the Muslim nationalists in Palestine, which again, also joined with Christians), he mentioned the opposition to the Peel Commission as being driven by opposition to Jews having a state (aside from the value of the territory, it also meant quarter million Palestinians would have been transferred, and sovereignty would have been under Transjordan) etc etc. It's like he read a couple of books by Morris - while a brilliant historian, he isn't an Ottomanist and his thesis on the Jihadi element in Palestinian nationalism was poorly argued, and even disputed by right-leaning historians like Yoav Gelber - and based most of his argument on that.

I support a fire. I support a two state solution. I think the issue is both people talk past each other what are they saying? I appreciate the people who are honest and say well I think the Jew should be thrown out or some people are actually very nice people who seem a little naïve to me who say they should all just live together in one state, many of those people live in the United States, Canada Australia, all places where Europeans came and conquered and settled. None of them wanna leave. You have to be realistic. You have to be honest in 1948 when the British partition, the land, the same British mind the partition British India were my ancestors are from 1 million people died during that partition. We all have moved on though there are bitter memories at that time when Israel accepted the partition, they were happy with getting a state that was only 55% Jewish and 45% Arab every time the Arabs have attacked them. Palestine has gotten smaller and smaller and smaller. Personally I think we should look at the 1967 borders and go from there to negotiate, but you can’t keep bombing and attacking and then get surprised that a nuclear powered state with a professional army is kicking your ass. I also have to preface it by saying that I think the far right wing government and Netanyahu have done war crimes are barbaric and should go to jail but at some point you have to sit down and make a deal innocent children innocent people are dying. In 2024 nation states aren’t just going to say OK you attacked us or you want us to leave OK we will do that.

To boil down (maybe crudely) part of Cohens position: “We were oppressed by colonizers so now it’s our turn to oppress AS colonizers”. Your people being oppressed does not give you the right to oppress others. Such a simple principle. You can’t philosophize or intellectualize that to make oppression and wanton violence permissible. The veterans from 1948 are on camera gloating about the atrocious acts they committed against Palestinians when they landed. You can’t justify that.

And why no smoke for the fellow Europeans who actually oppressed them for millennia? It's like that famous parable about the boss abusing/bullying you so you go home and take it out on your family and they in turn abuse the dog/cat. Why is it easier for some to be selectively reactionary & take out their frustrations on everybody BUT those who directly abused/hurt them? After reading this back to myself it hit me that people feel comfortable reacting to/abusing those whom they don't believe have power and /or agency over them.

Persecution of minorities (including Jews) existed everywhere, and the Muslim world was no exception. But no one disputes (not even pro-Israel scholar Bernard Lewis) that Jews fared better under Islam than Christendom, until Zionism poisoned relations. Conflict arose in the 1880's when European anti-Semitism gave birth to a Zionist movement that sought to recreate a long-lost Jewish homeland in now predominantly Muslim Palestine. Arab hostility towards waves of European colonists with ambitious territorial designs was hardly irrational. Neither was outrage at the breathtaking hypocrisy of Western nations that shut their doors to Jewish refugees fleeing the Third Reich but magnanimously voted at the UN to partition Palestine. For decades, Palestinians refused to "recognize" Israel: they were asked not only to renounce their homeland but also to grant legitimacy to its usurpers. Today, the majority accept a two-state compromise. Intoxicated with power and a sugar daddy called Washington, Israel chose occupation, apartheid and now, genocide.

As an Israelite and an historian who has had the privilege to study history from primary sources available to serious academics I can assure you that our Torah starts with Genesis ie human origins IE Black people and that our Torah is about a particular Black family and our relationship with OUR G-d and has nothing to do with anyone else. See Psalm 147 and Matthew 15 and 24. What has been hidden from view by white surpremacist scholarship is the fact that socalled nonblack people have stolen the identity lands titles and heritage of a particular group of Black people called Israelites wherever we find modernity. See Anacalypsis by G Higgins and Black Sambo documentary on KZbin and Spanish Inquisition and Portuguese Expulsion from primary sources. Never trust history out of the mouths of others no matter what color they may be. Google Black European Royalty and Heraldry.. the fact that our brother is an Israelite who has no idea that the person he's talking to is literally pretending to be human ie Black would be laughable if it wasn't so demonically savages. According to science and their own history they have only been on the planet for six to ten thousand years and are not human. Shalom 😊

I think the point that "it's complicated," is that phrase is used to shut down conversation and discourage people from studying beyond what they see on mainstream media. It's certainly a very complex conflict, but the issue is simple: it's about the land.

@ismailah8945 firstly. Clearly, no one is a demon here except you, maybe. Secondly, yes, you absolutely do debate demons. Especially if they have the capacity to wipe out the entire middle-east if they so choose. Whether Israelis are angels or demons is completely irrelevant. The more the Arabs fight. They worse the situation has gotten. Consistently. For 100 years. Name one time that arabs have indulged in an escalation of violent resistance, and that has improved their situation. At some point you have to question the strategy. What do they say about people who do the same thing over and over again, expecting different results. And you certainly have to question either the morality or the intelligence of people advocating for that.

Mr.Cohen “Jihad” is the Arabic word for “struggle” generally against oppression of a threatening force or group. It does not just have religious connotations - it’s a WORD - it infuriates me when Arabic words are so xenophobically singled out as having purely threatening and religious connotations- this whole religious explanation of colonialism is a method that has been used by every colonial project in history - it’s an easy way to separate people based on characteristics that cannot be easily defined without it

Is that Palestinian land as well? Gold Meir carried a British Overseas Territory passport that designated "Palestine" as the British Overseas Territory she was from. The passport clearly said "British Passport" on top of it, with a designation at the bottom saying "Palestine". It was a British passport. The British Land Survey of 1945 actually showed 71.6% of the land was government owned land (the government were the British, not the Palestinians) 8.6% of the land was owned by local Jews, 16.5% owned by a handful of wealthy foreign Arabs and only 3.3% of the land was owned by local Palestinian Arabs. @@lilianehuddleston9363 The Brooklyn Jews you're referring to are completely different. Those Palestinians left those homes in 2021 not in 1948. Those homes were originally Jewish homes and the Jewish owners were kicked out by the Jordanians. The Jordanians then forced the Palestinian residents to pay rent to them. When Israel won the land back in a defensive war in 1967, they returned ownership to the original owners - with the stipulation that the Palestinian residents could remain indefinitely, as long as they paid the legal owners, the same rent that they were paying the Jordanian government from 1948-1967. They refused. This went through court case after court case for over 50 years with constant appeals and all due process awarded to the Palestinian residents. It went as high as the Supreme Court - who eventually gave them the final ultimatum. Pay rent to the legal owners or get evicted. They were evicted because they still refused. During that time, the land had been sold by the legal owners, who no longer saw the value in keeping a property that was costing them money in legal fees, in their attempt to get rent. This is where the Brooklyn Jews eventually came in.

The reason there isn't DNA test in Israel as in many different countries is mainly because of privacy concerns ( for example if someone is adopted and he find out that he is adopted by DNA test that would sucks ) sorry for my bad English I don't know how to describe it well but I think you get the point . And by the way you can still have DNA test using american or which ever companies , Israel is a free country it is just that the country don't support those services . Sorry but that’s a very stupid comparison. There’s a difference between saying religion is a justification of violence (like slavery) versus what cohen is saying , that religion is the *cause* of the violence. Like Cohen provided an example of , when the Hashemite family from the Jihaz took over 75% of mandatory Palestine, there was not an uproar to overthrow them as they were fellow Muslim Arabs. . Land & displacement definitely plays a factor don’t get me wrong, but Religion is also a cause,not a justification.
@adnans8778
@adnans8778 11 ай бұрын
You haven't shown why religion is the cause. You've just said it isn't. The Hashemite example is irrelevant and shows how Cohen doesn't understand the history and is just cherry picking information to support a conclusion he's already made. There wasn't an uproar when the Hashemites took over because they weren't ethnically cleansing the Arabs. Indeed there have been many examples of Jewish leaders and influentials in the Muslim world. If you think religion is a cause why wasnt there mass opposition to Jewish immigration to Palestine pre-1920s? Because then it wasn't overtly Zionist. Jews had been living among Arabs all over the Arab world relatively peacefully for centuries. But when Zionism became prevalent the Arabs knew this would mean their subjugation and started opposing it, just as many others all over the world including Jews opposed Zionism at that time because of its implications. Einstein, a Jew, recognised the inherent problems with Zionism when he said in 1929: “Should we be unable to find a way to honest cooperation and honest pacts with the Arabs, then we have learned absolutely nothing from our 2,000 years of suffering and will deserve our fate.”

No it's actually factual and correct. Zionism is a political movement.. Judaism is a religion. Christians or anyone who supports Israel can be a zionist.. Only a jew can practice Judaism.. Its a political movement that weaponised Judaism to secure support and allies and at expense of the religious Jews who left because they could not live with zionists whilst some assimilated for security.. And on some levels I can understand.. But not their actions, and they would of not had Palestinians ire if they had from the beginning just lived in peace and as they grew did it the lawful way ask for rights instead of doing everything under handed and using extreme vience and prejudices against the people who had lived their since their ancestors had been invited back by Muslims and it was not the Muslims who persecuted you through your dispora.. It was your Christian allies.. You ran to Muslims for protection.. But this is what we say you bit the hand that fed you.. But joined with your foes to destable your Muslim long term allies.. So who betrayed who..? The Palestinians definitely didn't.. The Muslims are always commanded not to be unjust to the Jews and Christians.. They won the land peacefully.. The Christians didn't choose you to rule over them neither did the Jews from mars time they invited umar to come.. So you are mistaken.. You are not party to your true history.. Joseph.. Muslims know their history and don't have hundreds of years gap.. So why when you came in early 19th couldn't you fit in with the original Jews of palatine and treated them like second class citizens.. Are they self hating Jews or are they hurt and offended by zionist actions.. Who they feel hijacked their beliefs for security..?

Joseph Cohen is accusing the Palestinians of being anti semitic. He needs to know that a Semite is a member of any of the peoples who speak or spoke a Semitic language, including in particular the Jews and Arabs. The name comes via Latin from Greek Sēm 'Shem', son of Noah in the Bible, from whom these people were traditionally supposed to be descended. In other words Palestinians are semites.

Spot on Mark! It’s a distraction to say it’s about religion because it changes the paradigm away from colonialism. If someone moves into your house you don’t care what their religion is you care that they leave your home and leave you in peace. This is not hard but if we can make it hard we can pretend that it’s not about what it is about. The walls, cameras, and control over the Palestinians is the problem. The belief that they are inferior and not entitled to the same things the Zionist believe they are entitled to is the problem. All the words in the world won’t change that.

@atr4454 The thing is , it’s kind of specious to use the Bible or any ancient book as land registry to make claims like my ancestors were here thousands of years ago, God promised us this land, so it’s ours! Is your God the God of the rest of humanity ? Do Buddhists and Hindus believe in your God? And even in the Abrahamic religions, regarding that land, God made a convenant with the children of Israel, a convenant that they broke and were punished for it by God who exiled them from the land. That exile order was never reversed which is why some religious Jews find the state of Israel as blasphemous to Judaism. And you’re making your claim on that land against people, the Palestinians who probably have a more legitimate claim than you! The Ashkenazi Jews have extensive European ancestry, most of them are frankly Eastern Europeans from specific countries in Eastern Europe. Palestinians and Mizrahi Jews have shared ancestry, they both have Canaanite DNA, so Palestinians are middle easterners, Mizrahi , Jews are also middle easterners. Ashkenazi Jewish people have ancestry in Europe. Why do you think Israel’s skin cancer rate is among the highest in the World ? Because a mostly European population with yes a religious connection to the levant but with no ethnic connection to the levant is now living there ! Skin cancer can affect anyone but it is 30 times more prevalent in non-Hispanic white individuals than in any other human population.

Just 3 Hashemite "Kings" have ruled over Jordan in succession since 1921 although they're foreigners & their subjects are majority Palestinian. & if it's the walls & control that Palestinians find so distasteful do you have any conception of how they're forced to live in Lebanon where every Palestinian, roughly 500,000 individuals residing there are legally denied the right to own property, restricted from working in 39 professions, prevented (even after living there for generation after generation since the 40's) from acquiring/receiving citizenship & all the legal protection that affords someone, 80% of them living beneath the national poverty line, forced to reside in designated camps & so much more. There is no Khazarian history in Palestine. They are not descendants of the ancient Hebrews. The so-called "clock" before the 1800's doesn't exist. Cohen is also attempting to create a European Jewish "People" when in reality they were converts and not descendants of any Semitic people. So the "history" is a fabrication. Just because the European "Jews" practice a few ancient Hebrew rituals and they change their European names to sound Semitic, does not make them descendants of the Jews. Sholmo Sand makes this perfectly clear in his book "The Invention of the Jewish People."

Great job Marc very clearly stating and explaining your points. You are 100% correct that it is not complicated to understand how the modern “Jewish” state of Israel was founded through settler colonialism. Joseph’s contradictory responses unknowingly to him actually very well demonstrated the way in which Zionism strategically muddies the clarity and makes it “complicated”. Joseph relied on arguing that the Zionist project for a Jewish homeland was nationalistic bc “ethnic” Jews in Europe were being persecuted needed a land to flee to. He was willingly arguing they were “ethnically Jewish” not religious…until he needed to counter the concept of settler colonialism. Now all of a sudden it’s religious Jews in the Arab world being persecuted bc they are Jews, it is “Zionism is anti-colonial” bc Jews ruled Judea and they returned to reclaim their land, it is Palestinians are all anti-Semitic bc their issue is with Jews bc of their religion. Completely erasing the existence of both Palestinian Christians and Jews. When in reality the only side claiming to be in this fight for land bc of religion are the Zionists. When in reality it is predominantly secular ppl calling themselves “Jews” wanting to do a land grab and dispossess the indigenous Palestinian population.

People forget that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob said that HE WOULD RETURN HIS PEOPLE WHOM HE SCATTERED. The Jews or Khazars and converted Jews who emigrated to Palestine/ Israel from 1918 to 1948 did so because if a Zionist political nationalist movement initiated bt Theodore Herzl who died i. His early 40's and David Ben Gurion and a Rothschild and other Jewish donors supported the emigration of the Eastern European Jews to Israel. God didn't return them. Whenever Israel did things on their own or in disobedience to God, he chastised the children of Israel and punished them and sometimes destroyed them and sent them into captivity and told them what evils he would bring upon them. God also told the Children of Israel that the STRANGERS would live among them. These Zionist are in disobedience right there. They don't want the strangers to live among them. God told them to be his people and worship him. Alot of Zionist Jews are secular and not spiritual. God told the Jews to worship him and cling to him. We know that these Eastern European Jews in Israel now are imposters. God had nothing to do with them going to Israel. They also have the audacity to say who is a Jew. God called them a stiff necked people. Although God loves them, he said they were disobedient to him and his word. Jesus Christ, the end of the LAW to them who believe. Jesus was a Jew. We are Christian Jews. We also have a right to the land of Israel. There is neither Jew nor Greek. Netanyahu never should have committed Genocide on the Palestinian people and never should have put them in some say a open air prison for over 75 years. Who does this in the 21st Century? It is wrong and barbaric and breeds hostility from the Arab Palestinians. See, these Zionist always forget that many people read the Old Testament ( Torah) and we know what God said to the children of Israel. The STRANGERS can live among them because they were STRANGERS in a strange land ( Egypt ). In other words don't do to the strangers what was done to you. The problem comes down to the Palestinians, and many pro Palestinians today seeing the Jews as a European settler colonial state rather than an indigenous community attempting to decolonize and establish their homeland. So long as that’s the understanding of the conflict, not even 1% would be acceptable, and frankly if I was Palestinian and believed they were invaders I’d also reject the offers too. Therefore, a return to their land from the Euphrates to the red sea is a complete myth.

It's not really their book. It was written by Judahites, who had historically warred against their Israelite neighbours. Israel features as the "naughty sibling" who did the wrong thing and was absolutely destroyed. Like some parents might tell a naughty child that they actually had another child before, but they met a terrible fate because they didn't heed their parents' warnings. The part of the Bible concerning Israel is a lesson on _not being like Israel._ Even before Israel is introduced, its fate is already summarised not once, but twice, as God himself forsees that they will disobey him and need to be punished most terribly. According to the Bible, all of the Israelites are still, to this day, captive in Assyria, their nation destroyed until the end of days. It bears remembering that the Bible was intended to be the curriculum for the literal /children/ of Judah (and laterJudea). Adult historians are not the target audience. X)

Come on. Jews were 5%-10% of the population of the Roman Empire. Interaction with Jews exists in all the Roman sources, and before that the Greek sources. In the opposite, the "Palestinians" exist as a "nation" since 1960s, while there was a decision to rebrand Arabs into a new made-up nation.

I learned a lot, not just about the history & complexities of Israel-Palestine, but also about how to stay focused on debating arguments & not getting side-tracked with strawman arguments or conflating topics that have nothing to do with actually undermining the disputed facts & opinions (as Cohen tended to do.) Well done, Marc 👏 I appreciated both men for staying respectful-of each other & of their audience. 👍 I have the attention span of a gnat, but I was highly engaged for the whole 1hr 10mins. P.s. the metaphor at the end of “it’s complicated” was highly effective & entertaining 😂 🎯

The best point of the entire debate was when Joseph asked Marc why there was no objection to the Hashemite dynasty taking control of Jordan if it’s truly not a religious issue. Marc never gave an answer.

Palestine is, and always was, colonial. It's a European colonial name for the region. Arabs did not have the idea of a "Palestine" until the twentieth century. It was the British colonialists who drew the borders and named the place. The Ottomans didn't have a Palestine, either. Of all the imperialists who ruled the area, only Europeans had a Palestine. And it was a colony. It was ruled from Rome, Constantinople, and finally London. So Marc Lamont Hill's assumptions are European colonial assumptions. In order to see Arabs as a majority population of Palestine, you have to assume the colonial boundaries drawn by the Brits and envisioned by Europeans. Jews were a majority in some areas. Jerusalem notably and significantly. A plan of partition was drawn up to give Jews an area in which they'd be a majority, and Arabs an area in which they'd be a majority. The Jews accepted, the Arabs refused the idea.

lol nice propaganda. historic palestine existed way before the British took over. Jews were not the majority in that land for over a thousand years. Its European settler colonialism because, it's a bunch of European settlers who came to colonize the land.

This guy keeps ignoring settler colonialism... and talking about how the jews were persecuted 3000 years ago. He's weaponizing antisemitism. stating majority Palestinians are antisemitic is false. I am pakistani American and i am not antisemitic. We dont persecute an entire race for what zionists are doing. This guy is clearly spewing zionist israeli talking points. Glad this was cordial.
