I hope movie Sonic grows to look like your models in later movies with his age; also if they ever do a Generations adaption, it would really help distinguish between an older and younger Sonic like the games easily do

Great work

Your design is very thoughtful. You did more than make it look "cool", you have purpose to it from a narrative perspective. Brilliantly done. I think Sonic should go through one more character design change, a slight one. Sonic is a teenager and will be one for a long time, I'm sure, so to represent his late teenager, almost adult age, they should stay true to the progression they've given him before and age his look a final time. A tad taller, grown quills in different areas of his head, etc. What you have is a good idea, especially the blue fur blend into the tan arms. You really thought this through. Hopefully, Sega makes a subtle redesign to compliment good ideas like this.

Very insightful video and loved how thorough you were with explaining your design process. Definitely learned some stuff from this video from the comparisons alone. Your Sonic and Shadow redesigns look great! Seeing this makes it easier to digest what possible beneficial influence the movies can have in terms of character design. The shoulders are something I have a soft spot for whenever artists implement them on their Sonics. I wonder if Sonic Team would go your route or just have the shoulders themselves be blue slightly before it transitions into tan or just keep it tan altogether. The shoes are also a great design choice as well. Letting them be more realistic leads to a lot more flexibility than the current shoe design. I have an appreciation for how Sonic's shoes were animated in Heroes, so getting back to that would be nice. The one thing I'm conflicted about is Sonic's quills, however. I understand why you chose to design him that way. In fact, it has great storytelling potential for why Metal looks the way he does. With the front facing silhouette though, it feels like there is too much going on even though it does a good job conveying the sharpness of his quills. For the 3/4 that he's drawn in your design, maybe have the top quill behind the ear to represent the quill on the other side of the head. In a 3D space they would have to distort the model to get that effect. Not sure how to address the ones on the cheek though. If Sonic Team made the quills sharper, I feel they would be able to speak for themselves and the simplicity of his design can still be retained. This would make the ones on the cheek redundant but moving them to between his quills would just be Boom Sonic and idk if that's necessary. This is definitely a tough process to figure out, but also exciting to see the potential routes an upgraded Sonic design could go.

I appreciate the idea with the arms, I like the detail of the horizontal stripe. Not as big a fan of the blue shoulders; I don’t think “distinctly colored” and “pronounced” are mutually exclusive for Sonic shoulders. Furthermore, that design element feels rather iconic to me, and ties Sonic to his pixel game heritage. Maybe swap the colors? Tan upper arm and blue forearm? But that would have its own problems, definitely less clean. Idk lol The head spikes are interesting. Like the Boom redesign, but more extreme yet more stylistically grounded. It feels like something Sonic Team would/could actually do. There’s thought and intent, not just detail abuse. And Shadow is still great, no notes (maybe the eyes are too tall/skinny? Could just be the angle) .

While i personally feel as if the current designs are like a 8/10 i feel as if ur art and redesign is maybe a 9.5/10 i love sonics arms and the shoes, the head shape i feel is a to round, like the muzzle feels to circular. id personally go for more emphasis in the brow rather the muzzle because at it allows for more creative ways of animating the two. The 3 additional fur spots i feel need to be placed somewhere else. Like the top one is really jarring to me. Id maybe make his ears more fluffy rather than having the random third quill tho the 2 on the side of his muzzle i feel are really nice and add more shape to the head. But these are moreso personal things i would change, still a very solid redesign that adds a bit of the best of both worlds.

@@Mardiculous I like your changes to the face, but I don't really understand the extra spikes. The front silhouette would still be very strong even without them, and I think the fact they point in different directions detracts from the flow of his main spikes. I do agree with your reasoning for changing the shoes, but I think they would be better off with something longer and floppier, like in Adventure DX. The shoulder thing is still tricky. My thing with tan arms is color balance. I feel like there is way too much blue on Sonic when his arms are blue too. Have you tried a version of your design where the tan part starts farther up the arm? I still think the defined shoulder is possible even if it had the tan color.

I'm glad you went easy on yourself and weren't trying to stick to the 5mins you gave yourself. I think it's totally fine to go a few minutes overtime, don't mind it at all! I really love the redesign in the top left of the thumbnail! I've made my own custom Sonic model, and I kinda wanna try modifying it to match that design, if you're okay with that. (I'd credit you for partial inspiration) I'm currently working on some pretty big Sonic fan animation projects and I'm wanting to create fully custom rigs/models for them. Anyways, I'm not the biggest fan of the final design you showed, personally. The shoulders seem a little too blocky, (minor issue) and like other comments have said, I'm not into the 3 triceratops-like fur spikes. Other than those issues I do like it quite a bit, 'tho not as much as the other one. As for the ads disrupting things, I suggest you consider getting an ad blocker to prevent further disruptions. You also might want to consider asking some friends or something to find a solution for the issue of constantly referencing past videos where you've discussed certain topics (which oftentimes have multiple parts) and I can see this getting messy with more videos. I'm not sure what the solution might be. I think at this point you're becoming a new comfort youtuber for me, keep up the great content! This is my second time writing this long comment, apparently the first time it didn't go through at all. I think I got everything down I wanted to say?
@Mardiculous2 күн бұрын
Hmm I like the interconnected element, so there's always more context, and I refined it to 5 minutes. Everyone gets to choose how much, and with what topics that want to engage with. I plug them intentionally, and go over time, as much as I felt I was interrupted/feel I need to recap due to complexity. As for the take on the added spines.. looks like an opportunity for a follow up video! I feel each conversation should be ongoing and ever evolving. It means there's never a shortage of topics to discuss, similar to in person interactions, its limited! It keeps it fun and always fresh for me, so I can keep making videos often, and allows comments like this, influence the next part!
@CG_Maker2 күн бұрын
@@Mardiculous I already knew that was the idea behind this format, but I'm just concerned that someday it'll become too much to manage and I think there might be a better way to go about it. (Or, maybe there's not) On paper, it's a good idea, but I think the execution could possibly use some work? I don't know, I could be totally wrong and my concern misguided. I suppose time will tell. But do I have your blessing on trying to closely mimic your redesign in my own models? I know your design isn't like, super original but just simply having your blessing would be pretty neat, and also just out of respect for your work. Also I'll assume you meant to say "unlimited" instead of "limited." Typos amiright?
@Mardiculous2 күн бұрын
@@CG_Maker Oh no! I meant Limited! As in, in-person interactions have limits, which means every time you reconnect, there's always some conversation to continue, next time you're able to speak to them! There is for SURE ways to improve the style, some comments on this very video inspired some changes I want to make! It's just going to be incremental, and based on very specific things. For example! What do you mean by 'too much to manage'? I plan on making playlists for every unique tangent, so together they are larger videos, better informed by comments and the simple pass of time. I don't doubt your concern! It's a new format, and I need to accept that it'll need work before it feels just right, but I know it will be worth it! PS: Of course you have my support to be at all inspired by the design lololol! I would actually LOVE a shoutout, along with a different take on Sonic!
@CG_Maker2 күн бұрын
@@Mardiculous Oh! My understanding was just a little off, I re-read what you said multiple times but I still didn't understand exactly what you meant as you intended. My bad. By "too much to manage" I'm concerned about a possible scenario where (assuming you keep up what you're doing for a prolonged period of time) you'll have a ton of content made, and you'll have to link back to previous videos, and then many of those previous videos have multiple parts and then within those videos you have links to other videos, creating quite the rabbit hole to go down, particularly for new viewers. (In which case simply watching all your videos in order would be the optimal route) IDK, something like that. Playlists will help I'm sure, however. It's just a concern I wanted to voice to help out. Anyways, now that I've now seen all your videos in this style, I'm inclined to participate in the comments more on these videos, I can see this being quite interesting! I hope the comments will remain manageable, at least for a little while, before the conversation becomes overwhelming with thousands of comments for each video. (Also I do apologize for my lengthy comments, I like to be thorough and clearly understood.) A related question I have is, are there any plans to potentially someday make an alternative place outside of youtube for discussion, perhaps say, a discord server or the like?
@Mardiculous2 күн бұрын
@ I see what you mean, and I am sorry if this is confusing. I’m not surprised, again, I thought a long time about this idea so I’d likely have more success explaining it in a video. ( which I am definitely going to do asap) I’ll try tho: the rabbit hole you’re speaking of, I believe already exists in other content, you just don’t know when it’s going to become one. I intend to give the viewer more control as to how far they go, with an opportunity to detach/respond. As for too many comments to respond to, it has been awhile, but I still plan to respond to comments within follow up video parts. It’s just lately, there’s a lot of new topics to talk about because I’ve been gone. So, those piles of comments will only help produce videos/allow viewers to be more involved. I’m not so sure about a discord server, since I tried that before and it didn’t match so well with my little availability. Moderation is a big job. Might have to just make an effort to socialize on stream as much as possible.

I think if they made the characters furry, you could give Sonic shoulders because it would be more obvious that it’s not a skin suit. I also think the extra spikes kind of take away from his silhouette, I think a better option would just be changing the shape of the spikes so that they are less tube-like. I really like your art despite it all!

I think he looks cool either way but honestly I think I prefer the tan arms but I think maybe it's because we're used to seeing tan arms more so but to me I think blue arms makes sense because his legs are blue so his arms should be blue and the he is one of the only characters that have that like every other character their arms and legs match. Fantastic work, as always. The only design choice I don't really agree with for Sonic are those 3 little triceratops horns you gave him. Your reasoning was so that he resembled Metal Sonic? I don't really see the point in doing so. Metal Sonic is supposed to resemble Sonic, so, having Sonic reflect Metal seems to turn things into a "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" situation. But, see, it's only by this type of discussion video where these kinds of responses can even happen! You present a problem and you provide a VISUAL solution to your problem. Is it a solution I agree with? Not entirely, but that's the point! We can point to a precise thing and say "I like this, but I don't like this part." More of this please. And I don't just mean from Evan. From all of y'all. Make your points concrete by providing examples to back up your argument.
@Mardiculous2 күн бұрын
For the Metal Sonic thing, it's not meant to imply anything like Sonic styled his hair based on Metal Sonic narratively! That would be weird yeah, for Sonic to start to look like Metal, after the fact. It's similar to how prime added a spiky-ish texture to Sonic's quills, but my design, has 3 pop up, in what I believe is a smart placement. I dislike how the movie's put straight up real world hedgehog quills, on top of a larger triangular quill. Like the needles. My design basically is doing the same thing, BUT implying each larger triangle of Sonic's quills, are made up of many smaller triangles. Sorta like what Prime's texture implies, combined with Boom Sonic's idea, but a better placement (imo) because it frames Sonic's face much better and has multi-benefit uses that I can continue on.. Lmaoo, again.. spent a lot of time thinking of this..

I think people have been harping too much on the model of the characters. Sonic and Shadow’s character models are getting updated by Sega. Same with Amy, Rouge, Tails, Omega and Knuckles. The focus is the story that really decides the design of worlds and not just the characters. Design the worlds and the characters can be tailored with it. The story has to grow in the most important times of Sega and Sonic. Like the Robotnik Family and Eggman and Shadow. They could be the effect of an anomaly that Black Doom caused.
