Range Rover Velar vs. Mercedes-Benz GLE (ENG) - Gentle Giants Duel

Range Rover Velar and Mercedes-Benz GLE are similar, but at the same time very different cars. Despite its slick lines the Range Rover Velar is a good off-road vehicle. Meanwhile the Mercedes-Benz GLE may look beefy and sporty with its AMG pack, but in order to try competing against the Velar off the beaten path it requires some expensive options.

Heily - no I have had zero problems, I had that fear before I bought it because of what people say about Range Rovers. the only thing you have to get used to is the touch control screens, but once you get the hang of it it’s great

It is slow, it often bug, especially the Apple-car play...I hate the metal ring on the steering wheel. It burns in summer and it is f#### cold in winter. I will go for the GLE 350 de for next car. By the way, you should not compare the Velar to the GLE. GLC would be more realistic. Let the GLE compare to the RR Sport.

I had the Velar R-Dynamic P380, and it was one of the most enjoyable vehicles I have ever driven. Also an eye-catcher (though I see other manufacturers are starting to copy some of the RR "trademarks" - angles, even the shape of the wrap-around headlights and tail lights). I only parted ways with mine because it was about to go out of warranty. In Dynamic mode, what a fun ride, and a wonderful supercharger spool sound from under the hood! I would say that the seats are quite firm, which is nice in cornering but can make a long trip a little uncomfortable. Additionally, vision out the rear window is limited. Exhaust signature is muted, even in Dynamic - if you want exhaust pop, go for its cousin, the Jaguar F-Pace. I now have the AMG GLE 53. It took me a week to figure out how multiple-redundant it was - perhaps a tad overcomplex. Put into Sport+ mode (the only way I think someone should drive an AMG), and it is a fun car as well, with pleasing muffler pop. The electric motor alows you to take off from a dead stop as if the turbo were fully spooled. Overall the interior is much more refined vs. the almost racecar feel in the Velar - almost captian's chairs vs. the Velar's bucket seats. The seats are comfy enough to take a long drive in and the rear vision provides a much bigger picture. On the "meh" side, you see a lot of GLEs - enough that they really don't stand out (even the AMG). Additionally, for a car this nice, they should have hidden the rear wiper under the spoiler - ain't that difficult. Bottom line - I'll take either one if offered - but only in the turbo (AMG) or supercharged (Velar) V6 or V8 (GLE 63 S and Velar SVR, respectively). Leave the four cylinders for the GLAs and Evoques.

Bought a 22 Velar for my wife. She absolutely adores it. Plus I like to use it on weekends as well. Slick design and a nice break from my heavy GX.

Purchased the MB300d 4 matic and it’s truly amazing... nothing compares to it period. The 2 liter engine has its torque at low rpms and it is much much quicker than the specs, overtaking is quick and sweet and estatic . Mbux is mind blowing, it makes everything else look like my grandfather’s pickup truck. The interior is extremely quiet and insanely roomy and it was nice that the tire profile is higher than the previous model since it gives a nicer ride and protects the rims from being scuffed. On the downside, the 7 seater has no spare tire, and the apple CarPlay/android auto is not wireless and did not come with garage door openers or soft close doors like my 2016 Gle did. Apparently these last 2 options are not available on British models, my 2016 was American. Finally, the British model was only available in the back interior, and I feel like I’m driving a rental car. ... rental cars have black interiors, so I’ll probably have the upholstery refinished. Nevertheless, it’s an amazing machine.

@@fsan5382 Ahh, my friend. Brutal. 4k the water pump went, 6.5k the fuel pump went. Pano sunroof leaked, sunshade rattled, drive door pillar was not aligned properly, so there was constant road noise, sounded as if the window was cracked open. Infotainment center went black all the time and would default to high heat, you'd be unable to adjust any functions, exhaust pipes rattled. Fuel pump went for a second time around the 14k mile mark, lost power on the highway and had to have it towed back to the dealership. Had it fixed and a few days later I traded it in for a GLE 53. Best car I've owned.

This is the first review I write on KZbin, but it can't be any other way. I bought a Velar D275 black edition. After 3 months I can say that you cannot buy a better car. The Velar has a few small flaws, such as slow entertainment, opening the rear doors with the movement of the foot or pull-out handles that cause problems in the winter. However, the positives outweigh these shortcomings. Every morning when you go to your car you feel like a work of art is standing in front of you. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the most beautiful car in the world. Elegant lines, design for gentlemen. I have the classic version. Personally, I think it's nicer than Rline because of the clean lines (that's a matter of taste). When you press the button to open the door and the lights come on, you feel like you're getting into a spaceship. We don't have to talk about comfort inside at all - that's a dream. The air suspension is brilliant. The driving modes do exactly what you expect. If you go off-road with the Velar, you will find out that cars like BMW X4/5/6, Audi Q series, Mercedes GLA, GLC, GLS are only for laughs. Don't believe that there is a better sound system than Meridian - there isn't. This car has a couple of technological shortcomings, which you will not notice at all if you buy it. I personally have to state that I have fallen in love with these little things and they make this car unique and different for me. As much as you love a freckle on your wife's face, you will love these little things too. This car is different, unique and perfectly designed, I can't imagine a design that can beat this. This car has a unique character! Ladies and gentlemen this is the Velar! God, masterpiece!

Ive owned both. The velar looks the part, nobody can deny it’s looks. BUT, the Mercedes is just better in every other department. Which is why I’ve just traded in my velar for another GLE. It’s also a flip of a coin with landrover as to whether you get a goodun or a Badun….my velar was a shit show. Door handle covers always falling off, CarPlay constantly failing. All kinds of mechanical faults resulting in endless trips to guy salmon (my local dealership). All in the span of three months ownership. Sat in my new GLE that I picked up today right now as I’m typing this, feeling like I’ve just managed to get rid of a ticking time bomb (my velar). I personally would never go near a Range Rover again.

Mercedes makes the best hands free tailgate... part of the reason I chose it - plus I really liked the mild hybrid EQ boosted power train, and as stated in the video, it is just about as quiet as a Rolls. That's what I want in my SUV, a luxury vehicle experience. I don't want my SUV trying to be a sports car... that's what my sports car is for. My wife preferred the Velar, but only because it was prettier. They're both gorgeous, but when you consider the fine details, build quality, materials, functionality, and dependability, the Mercedes is a class above the Velar.

Great review as ever and I like the comparison format. For me my heart says Velar, it is a fantastic looking car with superb capability if you live somewhere with snow and ice in the winter. BUT having had 2 JLR products in the past where I had 2 Discoverys. The first one had shocking reliability but a great car....I couldn’t believe the next generation would be as bad so bought another....I was wrong! I have had a look at the Velar and for a pre I’m price the plastic and fit look low rent.....I was going to say Hyundai but frankly they are better.

They fixed most of the infotainment problems in 2018 itself. I bought mine in 2019, and I am still receiving Over The Air Software updates, which adds new features and also introduces performance/stability improvements. The 2021MY Velar's infotainment system is even better because it has the Pivi Pro system (which was first introduced on the new Defender), which is supposed to be faster than the InControl Touch Pro Duo system seen in this video

GLE is very conservative looking. Own a 2020 Velar R-Dynamic HSE P380 with 9000 miles and only issue so far is a oxygen sensor recently replaced under warranty. 22 inch wheels and all black and badge delete with red accents on front end and hood. MSRP was 86k bee and paid 69k with 4K miles on it over a year ago.

Looks like for you It's much more important to have space to place your 2L Coke botle next to you when drive your fency GLE, instead to realy see what a great car it's RR. By the way i drove a Evoque 5 years without any problem and now i own a RR Velar wich It's a fucking great car. 🤘

Velar anytime, for outer appearance and performance. Not so for the wind sound on motor-ways, which I find rather excessive, and minor (and irritating) blutooth and navigation/electronics glitches. Power-wise (D300) is a dream.

You need to hold your leg under the sensor on either side of the bumper for at least 1-2 seconds. It's done to avoid accidental inputs and is a much better system than the wavy foot thing in the GLE, since you can open it from both sides and will not loose your balance by waving your foot when your hands are full. This reviewer didn't bother to read the instructions

Owning a First Edition D300 black-roofed flux matt painted Velar I can say I'd never get tired of looking at it or driving it. Now quality... there is a lot to talk about it. But I'd still have bought the Velar, simply the best looking SUV ever and nothing comes even close. If you don't like the sound (or the lack of as at speeds you won't hear it, it has vacuum mount for the engline and it's quiet), you can always add n active sound, the CETE Automotive one has a particular sound that matches the diesl engine very well and it adds growl even at lowest lovel, w/o turning it into Audi dishwasher.

Nice review! I wonder if RRV.s infotainment system works well? I saw some cons in forum, has problems(crashed,frozen..blackout) from time to time? I'm very interesting, and will test drive next week for P300s. Thank you in advance for any advice.

Yes, it is riddled with bugs. Almost every JLR car I tested with the new infotainment has some problem. Anything from malfunctioning of some features (different in every car) to crashing.

@@MarekDrives I am sorry to say this, but you or the ownesr or the dealers are in the wrong. The Velar you tested is running on outdates software, and just like you can't blame Apple if your MacBook starts acting up as a result of running on outdated/buggy software, you can't put the blame solely on Jaguar Land Rover. I have a 2019 Velar, and the infotainment system has crashed only once in about 2 years, this is because I followed the steps in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5izhIeqnt-Sh68 to update the Infotainment and Vehicle Software on my Velar. Also, if you stop the car before the system has completely booted up (the software updates have brought this down to about 5 seconds once you press the start button), the system has to run a checklist to ensure that none of the systems were damaged. Just like you wouldn't unnecessarily force shut down a PC, you shouldn't force shutdown a new car before all the systems have finished booting up.

Land Rover has fixed the infotainment and electronics issues with the new 2021MY Velar by introducing the Pivi Pro system (the same infotainment system as the new Defender). I know that this InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system gets a lot of flak on the internet, but in reality it is pretty robust. You just need to ensure that you enable "Over The Air Software Updates" on your Velar (which unfortunately, most of these KZbinrs know close to nothing about). The infotainment system on my 2019 Velar used to take around 15 seconds to finish the boot up process from a cold start, after installing numerous complimentary software updates, this has been brought down to about 5 seconds (which is insanely fast, considering that I hadn't started my car for a couple of weeks). Mercedes cars are not "more reliable", as just one of my Mercedes cars has had more issues than both my Land Rovers combined. So no, Mercedes is just as reliable/unreliable as a Land Rover
