Go watch a series called: if the emperor had a text to speech device. This series explains A LOT about 40K and it does it with the haha funnies, which makes it not be completely and utterly depressing. TLDR chaos fucks with everything and the best laid plans go absolutely to pot because of this, the emperor of man wanted mankind to prosper and achieve all that it could be, creating a utopia and lifting mankind into a higher plane of existence, accelerated evolution basically. however things happened and the immortal emperor is all but dead shackled to the golden throne mainly to serve as a mental anchor enabling galactic travel for spaceships of all things. Chaos influenced the right people to say and do the wrong things at the right time and with enough time passing people forgot what the emperor wanted to achieve due in part to his own insistence to not even tell the primarchs what the full extent of his plans even were. with 1000s of years passing people also forgot how technology worked which is a really big problem and the totalitarian cult regime that is now the empire of man has become a absolute hell, there is no hope, no peace, there is only self perpetuating eternal war, since the chaos gods can only exist because of this struggle the hatred that is taught by the imperium actually empowers them and ironically if they were to stop that it might actually get better but doing so would also spell complete doom for mankind so yeah shit is FUBAR, there is no hope, only eternal war and suffering the entire galaxy is screwed and only the chaos gods prosper really, the only thing that might fix things is the return of the emperor but that is probably impossible and even if he were fully revived I don't know if even he could fix this

@@Gyallarhorn1 if the imperium decided to stop with the mechanicus nonsense and try to do education and research for new techs, they could improve the standard of living of people. But that is not grimdark so it's a no-no obviously. If people have more to loose than to gain with chaos, they will rebel far less often. But for that you would need to care just even a little about human life and the citizenry which the imperium doesn't. People are treated as no better than wooden sticks, in fact some tools and machines in the imperium are treated far better than the average human could ever hope to be. Falling to chaos' promises of a better life is not very hard in such conditions. Gulliman even acknowledges it.

So the last line of this and the title itself misconstrue the premise misconstrue the scene. He did send all the youths under 20 to a penal reeducation labor for life. The traitors he is asked about at the end and proclaims a sentence of "death" upon are the teachers and other adults of school who led the youths into rebellion. They were the ones he sentences to death. The youths themselves get hard labor in a penal work colony for life. which unironically in the grimdark universe of 40K is a rather lenient sentence for heresy/treason against the Imperium.

For guardsman, it's a whole month, for a space marine, it's just. January. For Titus, it was another disaster, for Marnius Calgar, it was a simple drop in.

As a little aside: Calgar was actually angry that the rebellion had been so poorly planned and executed, because he expected FAR better of those from their mortal guard forces. He actually makes a point earlier in this engagement of having to go have..."words" with the tutors and instructors.

Mercy or death was actually a trick question, because we all know the guardsman was talking about the emperors mercy or death.

One of the reasons Guilliman's planet works well is the lack of a minimum age for penal prosecution. This is something we should all adopt.

@@mad_max21 Jokes aside, underage criminals are a huge issue in countries with a high age of prosecution. They accompany older criminals and carry out the murders with impunity. Therefore, for violent crime, there should be no minimal age. A 12 year old murderer is the same as a 24 year old murderer.

@@mad_max21well... Warhammer shouldnt be taken as a advice but those of us that live in 3rd world countries know that 15yo should absolutly have the same sentences as adults if the commit adult crimes (murder, thief, rape, etc)
