In this episode Dr. Margaret Barker shares her thoughts on the religious climate of Jerusalem during the time of Lehi. She shares here belief in a group of followers of Isaiah that seemed to be in the same camp as Nephi and Lehi.
Margaret Barker has developed an approach to Biblical Studies now known as Temple Theology. Margaret Barker read theology at the University of Cambridge, England, and went on to pursue her research independently. She was elected President of the Society for Old Testament Study in 1998, and edited the Society’s second Monograph Series, published by Ashgate. She has so far written 17 books, which form a sequence, later volumes building on her earlier conclusions.
Since 1997, she has been part of the symposium Religion, Science and the Environment, convened by His All Holiness Bartholomew I, the Ecumenical Patriarch. This work has led her to develop the practical implications of temple theology as the basis for a Christian environment theology.
In July 2008 Margaret Barker was awarded a DD by the Archbishop of Canterbury ‘in recognition of her work on the Jerusalem Temple and the origins of Christian Liturgy, which has made a significantly new contribution to our understanding of the New Testament and opened up important fields for research.’
Margaret Barker is a mother and grandmother, a retired Methodist Preacher and was involved for over 30 years with the work of a Women’s Refuge.
The Stick of Joseph KZbin channel seeks to make the Book of Mormon accessible to all ages by making engaging, entertaining and informative content.

She has had many contacts and visits with LDS scholars. She either “got over it”or has been open from the beginning. I suspect she was pretty open because her subject matter would require a person with an open mind and heart to study it. It’s a bit controversial.

@MissionaryScottishWarrior I can’t edit my original post, so I apologize for the second post here, but male flowers produce pollen, which is obviously essential for fruit production. And plants that are basically hermaphroditic and have both sex organs on one flower may still need a second or third plant nearby for best fruit production, but not always.

The scripture Dave is referring to is found in the Book of Baruch, which is part of the Deuterocanonical books included in the Catholic and Orthodox Christian Old Testaments but not in the Hebrew Bible or most Protestant Bibles. The passage emphasizes that true wisdom comes from knowing and following God’s laws rather than understanding the physical creation. Baruch 3:14 states: “Learn where there is wisdom, where there is strength, where there is understanding, that you may at the same time discern where there is length of days and life, where there is light for the eyes and peace.”

When I heard lady Barker tell about the prophets being somewhere east of Jordan in the south, I remembered what I had heard about the community of the people of light down in the area of Qumran where the Dead Sea scrolls were found. They had a leader who was highly esteemed. Then I watched another video that suggested that John the Baptist had been part of that community. Then later, while studying the book of Matthew and I came to the part where Jesus said that John was the greatest prophet. I wondered about that and asked the Lord to fill me in on what is missing here. It did not seem that John lived long enough to be a great prophet. So the Lord reminded me about the group of Prophets there in Qumran and told me they were true prophets who, for a very long time had been living there out of sight and out of mind of the religious authorities of the Jews and the Roman authorities. They were involved is safeguarding scriptures. Then just before Herod's order to kill all the Baby boys. The Angel of the Lord told the prophets to go to Zacharias and get John and his mother and take them with them out into the desert. When the soldiers went looking for John and not finding him they went to Zacharias and questioned him and when he would not tell where john was they killed him between the temple and the altar. So John grew up with the prophets and became their leader. He then employed the prophets in making copies of the scriptures and organized a distribution plan to put copies of the scriptures into the hands of the common people in preparing them for the coming of the Lord.

Margaret Barker laid out the basics of this in 2005 at the Library of Congress Symposium on The Worlds of Joseph Smith. It was jaw dropping at the time.

I was a little taken aback when she mentioned the removal of symbols from Solomon's temple because they are also today removing certain symbols from the Salt Lake Temple and proclaiming that no future temples will have those symbols

This was an amazing conversation made more amazing when I opened 4 Baruch the next morning after watching it and nearly fell out of my seat as I read chapter 9 for the first time after watching this segment and others with Dave Butler and Mike Day. In 4 Baruch chapter 9 Jeremiah offers sacrifices and then collapses and is thought dead. The people want to bury him but a voice from God tells them he is not dead. He wakes up and begins prophesying about the Son of God coming to earth and saying that he saw God and His Son. This is very much in line with the experiences of Alma the younger, Limhi, and others in the Book of Mormon. The people become enraged and want to stone him for speaking the words of Isaiah. In the end they get their way and do stone him. As far as I can tell, the earliest English translation of 4th Baruch was in 1896 but I used Google to find that date and would be interested if that is correct or not. Either way, reading this after watching this segment with Margaret Barker and other segments with Mike and Dave nearly caused me to fall out of my seat.

This is great. Any of you listened to the podcast, "The Ancient Tradition"? It's amazing. It talks about many of the things that are talked about here but goes back farther into antiquity....and I think Margaret is even mentioned on the program. Thanks, guys!

I wish I could hit the like button 100 times! One minor criticism. I love Dave Butler, I pay top dollar for his books. But you could interview Dave Butler in the US. This is a rare moment with Margaret and I would like all the time with her you can get, by the way, you can tell Margaret is impressed with Dave’s knowledge!
